you are possibly having a hardware incompatibility problem. what motherboard
are you using?

from the gentoo livecd, boot the kernel without framebuffer support (you
should see a boot option which says nofb or no framebuffer). basically
what it does is remove the vga and splash params from the kernel.

you should then be able to continue the installation process.

Gentoo has been providing pre-built binaries for quite some time now. The
latest release from gentoo (gentoo 2004.0) has stage 3 tarballs for GNOME,
KDE, mozilla, openoffice etc. All these pre-built packages are available for
download from the gentoo mirrors.
The Gentoo Reference Platform (GRP), which is a snapshot of prebuilt packages
provides optimized binaries for x86, i686, pentium3, pentium4, athlon-xp,
Gentoo Hardened profile, amd64, sparc64, ppc, G3 and G4. Take your pick!

All the stage 3 installation asks you to compile is the kernel, and even that
can be avoided by using the genkernel script which builds the generic kernel
(though I would never suggest using it).

The gentoo LiveCD ISO's provide all the binaries.
Check releases/x86/2004.0/livecd/ in any gentoo mirror.

BTW, if you own an athlon-xp system, you can have the gentoo 2004.0 ISO's from
me. I have th following:
install-x86-minimal-2004.0.iso (80 MB)
install-x86-universal-2004.0.iso (688 MB) (works with any x86 based system)
packages-athlon-xp-2004.0.iso (639 MB) (optimized binaries for athlon-xp)

packages-athlon-xp includes:
xfce4-4.0.1, mozilla-firefox-0.8, mozilla-1.6, kde-3.2, gnome-2.4.2,
apache-2.0.48, mysql-4.0.16, qt-3.3, sylpheed-0.9.4, evolution-1.4.5 etc.

Regards,
Bhaskar.

To summarize the heart of Gentoo, imagine a user sitting in front of a
Linux system. What does he or she want do to? The Gentoo philosophy is
to allow this user to do what he or she wants to do, without getting in
the way...

Portage will keep your Gentoo Linux system as up-to-date as you
desire. And because of this, experienced Gentoo users don't pay too much
attention to new versions of Gentoo Linux -- after all, the latest and
greatest version of Gentoo Linux is always available by typing an emerge
sync command. There's no need to wait several months for a new version
of Gentoo Linux to be released because Gentoo Linux is continually
updated and refined and these improvements are immediately made
available to you...

#Support for x86, PowerPC, UltraSparc, Alpha and MIPS processors
#LiveCD-based installation for x86, PowerPC, UltraSparc and Alpha
#Latest stable KDE and GNOME
#Various optimized Linux kernels
#Very modern GNU development environment
#Excellent filesystem support: ReiserFS, XFS, ext3, EVMS, LVM
#Excellent hardware support: NVIDIA, Creative Labs Live! and Audigy
#Modular OpenGL and compiler sub-system (supports multiple co-existing
versions)
#Clean, dependency-based system initialization scripts
#New hardened Gentoo security initiative
#6000+ packages of the latest and greatest software
#Enhanced Portage capabilities

Great Yaar! Awesome for both -- newbie and Gurus. HATS OFF for Daniel
Robbins (Chief Architect)

How much time will it take to come into the race?

As a developer who is trying to get juice out of the system gentoo seems
very attractive.

But one problem I faced is lack of eco-system around the distribution.

I would like to see people making binary gentoo packages and exchanging
them.

I do'nt see any other way to install system in two hours.

When I tried it took me 3 days to get and compile all the packages that
I needed. And I am not of kind who would try too much stuff anymore. I
can list all the stuff I need in one line.

galeon, evolution, development tools, gaim, xfce, emacs, some other
support utils.

Time period required to compile major part of the packages are given
below.

This I am reporting for a PII with 192 MB RAM

XFree86 6 hours
Mozilla 5 hours
evolution and support tools like bonobo, gnome etc 5 hours
linux kernel 45 minutes
xfce - 20 minutes
glibc - 4 hours
