Re: Old G3

2010-04-20 Thread Elliott Price
If it's already running OSX, there's no need to partition the HD. Only
the very early G3 Macs had the issue where you had to install OSX
within the first 8Gb of the drive. I don't think that that model had
that restriction; and if you have an HD that's under 8Gb, there's
nothing to worry about.
It sounds like the best text editor would be Word X, part of Office X.
(I think it was the '01? '03? version? It's the first Office version
that ran under OSX.) I *believe* that will run under 10.1... Maybe
someone else knows for sure? Word's more powerful then Textedit, and
is 100% compatible with Word (even '07) on a PC.
You could also try an older version of Appleworks, it has a text
editor, and was universal, so it would run under both OS9 and OSX.
You might consider upgrading to 10.2; 10.2 was really the first really
stable version of OSX, and is more compatible if you want to run
useful apps.
You can check on the LEM swap, eBay, or Craigslist for old versions of
Office, AppleWorks, or 10.2

I just acquired an old iMac G3 (Tangerine!) from a guy. He gave me the

to a login screen when I first turned it on and so I tried an full
install of 10.1, including reformatting the hard drive. It seemed to
work. Later I read that it's preferable to partition the hard drive,
for OSX, but I can't seem to get that to work. Also, I'd like to use
the machine for writing. If possible, I'd like something with a few
more features than TextEdit, such as page/word count, that would
easily transfer over to a PC, but that might be wishful thinking. I'm
new to Mac.

If anyone can give me some advice on software and let me know if
partitioning is a requirement (and how I'd do it), I would appreciate
any help.

Upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard?

2010-04-20 Thread John Niven
My wife has a 2006 17 Intel iMac, which came with, and still has, Tiger (with
all the updates). Recently she came across a program that required at least
Leopard. So I'm thinking of upgrading her.

Can I go from Tiger to Snow Leopard directly? Do I just need the retail upgrade
box? Anything to watch out for?

Thanks

Re: Old G3

2010-04-20 Thread Ashgrove
Joshua,

I'm with Clark --you should either go up to at least 10.3, or stick to
OS 9, which will work fine with whatever amount of memory you got in
there. As for word processors, I have a soft spot for WordPerfect,
which you can get online for free --I'll post the link if I can find
it.

Good luck with your new iMac!

Felix

yep, I've done that to a couple of systems with no issues at all. The
only problems I've run into are printer driver issues, because we have
some big networked Xerox and Canon copiers/printers, and one really
obscure issue with a system joined to a Windows 2003 file server.

With the first-generation G3 Macs, there were some drive addressing
problems that prevented it to boot from OSX if it wasn't on the first
8Gb of the disk. This is my understanding of it, I may be wrong about
why, but those models definitely have that restriction. I *think* it was
only the G3 minitower, the G3 desktop, and maybe the Bondi iMac. If the
HD is under 8Gb, then there's no problem.

I believe it applies to all tray loader iMacs which includes the next
generation after the Bondi. And that group DID include a tangerine
model. I was thinking there wasn't a tangerine in the tray loader clan
which made me skip the 8Gb issue. You're right, that is a potential issue.

To the OP, does your new toy have a tray loader or slot loader optical
drive. If you have a tray loader then you do need to partition the HD
with a slightly less than 8Gb partition at the beginning of the HD to
install OS X onto. If you have a slot loader then you don't need to
partition the drive.
