Go to Control Panel - Control Strip and turn on the control strip. I don't have an OS9 machine handy right now, but I believe that the sound should be in there by default. If not, look in the Control Strip and Sound preference and see if there's any option to Show in Control Strip. In OSX, in the Sound preference pane, check the box where it says Show in Menubar. Another handy thing would be to get a newer model of Apple keyboard that has the volume buttons in the upper right hand corner. Any keyboard after about 2001 will have them. Hope that helps! -Elliott On Aug 10, 2010, at 9:46 AM, Walter Sheluk wrote: Just started to use my new iMac G3 and one of the several annoying items is the sound volume that I can only adjust by opening up the Control Panel : Sound. Thanks, sorry forgot to say that i am keeping this iMac G3 at OS 9 for the legacy midi/audio programmes i at one time used: many of those have features never ported to the OS X world. The Control Strip will work ( forgot about that one ) and for sure will test one of my newer Apple keyboards and hopefully that keyboard will work in OS 9. In what way don't they work? Have you tried other brands? Have you tried refirb carts from local ink/refill shops? My choices seem to be, in descending order of cost: 1. Branded cartridges 2. Third-party cartridges 3. Refilling myself, by hand As we all know, #1 is very expensive, but of course the manufacturers make their money on the ink, not the machines. #2 is as noted above. Do you-all have recommendations on whether it makes any sense to go to #3, which I have never done, or just suck it up and go to #1? Finding 3rd party carts can be difficult sometimes. Once you find a good supplier, stick with 'em. I'm not big on refilling myself. Too messy. Donno what your print volume is, but given the per page cost of inkjets... In what way don't they work? Here's the message I get, from within the Canon print utility: Canon IJ Printer Utility - iP6220D Ink Info Number: 1686 The following ink may have run out: Color The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled since the ink level cannot be correctly detected. If you want to continue printing without this function, press the OK button. Canon recommends to use new genuine Canon cartridges in order to obtain optimum qualities. But the only button that appears is Cancel. So it's impossible to get the printer to print anything, including a test page. Have you tried other brands? The third-party cartridges I've gotten (from LaserMonks) used to work but they don't seem to anymore. They haven't had a brand name of any sort on them that I can see. I'm hunting around for a different supplier and am glad to hear recommendations. Have you tried refirb carts from local ink/refill shops? I have no idea if any such are around here. I suppose they must be but I have no idea of names. snip Donno what your print volume is, but given the per page cost of inkjets... It might be worth dumping all your printers for a single color laser or a crayon pooper. Crayon pooper? Whazzat? I have a workhorse old LaserWriter 12/640 PS that I use for most monochrome printing precisely because of the cost per page. My color printing needs are pretty small so I don't feel a huge push to move to color laser printing anytime soon, especially with a son about to start college.
