Re: Feeling very stupid about printer setup...

I recently went through this with a Brother HL-2270DW and MY "new" Verizon FiOS
router [Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I] as well. What worked for me was:

1) Download the Networking Manual from Brother for detailed instructions;
2) Do a complete reset of the printer to factory settings per said instructions:
a Turn off the machine.
b Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in.
c Hold down Go as you turn on the power switch. Keep Go pressed down until all
the LEDs light up, and then the Ready LED turns off.
d Release Go. Make sure that all the LEDs turn off.
e Press Go six times. Make sure that all the LEDs light up to indicate the
print server has been reset to its factory default settings. The machine will
restart.
Then either
3a) use the Web Based Management (browser) method to configure the printer OR
3b) Download the BRAdmin Light for Mac and use it via a USB 2 connection to
configure the printer.

As I recall, I used method 3b above to finally get things working (I was also
connecting to a couple of Win7Pro PCs as well, and this got everything going).

Hope this helps,
Ramon

eMac available

2012-04-26 Thread Ramon Tate
Hi, all,
I have a working G4 eMac available for the taking in the Maryland suburbs of
Washington, DC. Please contact me privately if you are interested:
ta...@patriot.net will do the trick.

Merging two systems is a PITA no matter how you do it, and usually

Can that be done with the Library, System, Users folders ?

You anticipated my next question very nicely, Walter. Mail can at least
be exported/imported more or less successfully (although it doesn't
really give you an exact replica of the source tree structure, I
believe). What about merging iTunes and bringing over users? Migration
Assistant is/was supposed to know how to do that, but I'm not sure if
it has the selectivity to allow the amount of picking and choosing I
would like.

Finally, what about users with the same name? I know that since Mac OS
uses the Unix scheme of totally unique ID generation for each user
instance, it would seem that I shouldn't have any users on the target
with the same names as those on the source system. Also, I would like
to avoid migrating applications en masse and would rather do that
manually.

And thanks again, everyone, for all the excellent advice.

Moving an eMac from 10.2.8 to 10.4.11

2010-11-09 Thread Ramon Tate

Hi, all,
I have a somewhat esoteric problem and need some advice on how to do
handle it. I'm still using a 1GHz/1Gbyte PPC eMac running Mac OS 10.2.8
for much of my work and now need to move to 10.4.11 to accommodate a
new application that requires it.

The problem arises thus: some time ago I bought and installed 10.4 on
an external Firewire drive and have been booting and using it for the
occasional applications that required 10.4. Now I need to merge the
large amount of 10.2.8 data - and applications - that I've accumulated
with the 10.4.11 system into a single system.

Moving the data (mostly in Documents) is relatively straightforward,
and Mail seems to know how to export/import mailboxes in a usable way
also. What I would like to avoid is reinstalling lots of applications
and their associated files (e.g. iTunes and iPhoto).

The tools at hand: Carbon Copy Cloner, Migration Assistant (10.4
version), and of course Finder.

Other resources: several external Firewire volumes that can be used as
scratch volumes for building copying systems to and from. Both
systems (10.2.8 and 10.4.11) are/will be completely backed up to
respective backup volumes before any potentially dangerous merge
operations (three cheers for CCC!).

So, experts, how would you proceed? (and many thanks in advance for
your consideration of my problem)
