Have you installed a newer version of Keynote? Also, is the extension correct? 

Hope it gets fixed - I know the feeling , and it's not fun!

Thanks Linda,
Am trying to open in same app as they were created in - iWork 09
Keynote - also tried with ext  w/o - no joy. ;-(

I googled 'keynote file wrong format message' and got people with same 
problem:

Did you change your dock icon to '09 version

Another issue with Keynote '09 is that you can't output to Flash, unlike 
'08 version.

I keep both '08 and '09 on board
