Re: How to transfer from a G3 without Firewire to a G3 with Firewire

2008-10-15 Thread Kurt Piepenburg

You will have to zero/clear out the name that shows up when the authentication
screen first appears and type in the user ID and password for the computer you
are trying to connect to.

 John,
Go to the Sharing preference panel and turn on
 Personal File
 Sharing on both machines.
Then, from machine that is the destination, choose
 Connect to
Server... from the Go menu in the Finder.
In the small window that opens, click Browse
 and then navigate to
the name of the other computer and choose it, then click
 Connect.
(You may have to authenticate, which means entering the
 user name and
password for the account on the other computer. Don't
 connect as a
guest, you probably won't be able to access any files.)
 If you have
more than one account on the computer, you will have the
 chance to
pick which user account (or the entire hard drive) you wish
 to open.

In a few seconds, the hard drive of the other computer will
 appear on
your desktop, but the icon will be different. It may be a
 blue or
grey small globe. Double click it and you can drag any of
 the files
you want onto the desktop of your destination computer.

Let me know if you have any trouble doing this and I'll
 try to send
you some screen shots. I'm doing the 10.3 part from
 memory because I
have not run that OS since 10.4 was released. So, my
 descriptions may
not be 100% accurate, but the procedure is correct.

When you are finished accessing the other computer, drag
 that globe
to the trash to eject the disk.
 Cheers,
 John

Yes, you set up Sharing through the aptly named Sharing pref in system
prefs. Turn it on on both systems and if you click on the Go Network
icon you should see the other computer.

How is this set up on the PC end (Window's Vista or XP)?

Re: How to transfer from a G3 without Firewire to a G3 with Firewire

Do you have USB ports?
Is it possible to use an external hard-drive on both? I have a 300GB
external HD that has my backup files for my PC. The HD will show up
on the G3 but I don't think the PC files are executable. My PC and Mac
will both read the same files on my flash-drive, and that may be the
best option for you, if you are working outside of your home.

 Ethernet.

Hook 'em up via a crossover cable, or regular cables and a hub/switch/
router, set up sharing on one of them, connect to it from the other
 and copy it over.
