But an advantage of separating the bootable backup from the TM backup is that when one of those external drives fails, you still have the other one available. Also, it is best to connect the bootable backup drive to the computer ONLY when actually doing the backup or a recovery. Disconnect it from both the machine and AC power when it is not running. I clone three or four Macs to separate, bootable partitions on a drive about once a week. Some folks do it more frequently. Some folks keep two bootable backup drives, having one off-site in case of calamity at home base. By its nature, a TM external drive is connected to both the computer and AC power at all times, making it vulnerable to lightning and power hits. I have all four Macs running TM to a Time Capsule. Consider making that external drive a bootable clone with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Alternatively, use the external drive with Time Machine. Or take the best of both worlds by getting two external drives, one for cloning and the other for Time Machine. A good way to make a computer speedier and more efficient, though, is to get a bigger, faster drive. You can get up to 2 terabytes now, I think, and as fast as 10,000RPM, so the sky's the limit. Re: Upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard?
OK thanks everybody. I went to the Apple store and bought the Mac Box Set MC581Z/A which cost me ~$152 with a corporate discount and tax. This states that it's an upgrade for leopard or tiger, and includes ilife and iWork. I think its worth it because Apple recently replaced this iMacs screen for free (it developed vertical lines). I'm thinking that if I replace the hard drive, my wife should get another five or so years out of it (she's not a "power" user and she likes it's looks :). What kind of hard drive is needed? Any idea how big it can be? The current one (original) is 140Gb. This is a 17" 1.83GHz Core Duo iMac from 20006, I upgraded the ram to 2Gb. -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Anything to watch out for? Yes and yes. Watch out for your own data. You should do a complete backup of anything you do not want to risk losing. Also, verify that you meet the minimum requirements for memory and disk space. Some iMacs of that vintage came with half the required RAM. But moving to Snow Leopard has been the easiest and slickest upgrade of Apple's OS yet. To be legal with Apple licensing, you should buy the full software suite, "Box Set," which includes iWork and iLIfe. Your wife will be glad you did. It is technically possible to install the cheap version of Snow Leopard, but that license is legal if you already have Leopard on the machine. Anything to watch out for? yep, I've done that to a couple of systems with no issues at all. The only problems I've run into are printer driver issues, because we have some big networked Xerox and Canon copiers/printers, and one really obscure issue with a system joined to a Windows 2003 file server. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Re: Upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard?
Officially, Apple wants you to buy the box set for Snow Leopard when upgrading from Tiger, since you haven't payed for Leopard. However, the non-box set version will still upgrade from Tiger. (I'm 95% sure.) So the decision is up to you. (The box set is the version that includes iLife, and iWork. ) -Elliott On Apr 20, 2010, at 2:25 PM, John Niven wrote: My wife has a 2006 17" Intel iMac, which came with, and still has, Tiger (with all the updates).
