colocynthis.

It will turn to yellow completely when it mature.

Mr. Raghu's photos are young fruit of the plant.

I hope that ID is correct.

  Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad.

  Cucurbitaceae
Colocynth, Bitter apple, Wild gourd (Biblical), Gall (Biblical)
  Uses

Dried pulp of unripe fruit is used medicinally for its drastic purgative
 and
hydragogue cathartic action on the intestinal tract. When the fruit is
 ripe
its pulp dries to form a powder used as a bitter medicine and drastic
purgative. This powder is so inflammable that the Arabs collect it to use
 as
kindling. The fruit is used to repel moths from wool. In India, the vine
 is
planted as a sand binder. Seed, often removed from the poisonous pulp and
eaten in Central Sahara regions, contains a fixed oil.
  Folk Medicine

Considered cathartic, ecbolic, emmenagogue, febrifuge, hydragogue,
purgative, and vermifugal, the colocynth is used for amenorrhea, ascites,
bilious disorders, cancer, fever, jaundice, leukemia, rheumatism,
 snakebite,
tumors (especially of the abdomen), and urogenital disorders. According
 to
Hartwell the plant figures into remedies for cancer, carcinoma,
endothelioma, leukemia, corns, tumors of the liver and spleen, even the
 eye.
It is interesting to note that this folk cancer remedy contains three
antitumor ingredients: cucurbitacin B (active against PS-134 and KB tumor
systems), cucurbitacin E (active against LL and KB systems) and the
D-glucoside of beta-sitosterol (active against CA, LL and WA tumor
 systems).
The pulp or leaves is a folk remedy for cancerous tumors. A decoction of
 the
whole plant, made in juice of fennel, is said to help indurations of the
liver. Roots may also be used as purgative against ascites, for jaundice,
urinary diseases, rheumatism, and for snake-poison.
  Chemistry

Active drug contains an ether-chloroform soluble resin, a phytosterol
glycoside (citrullol), other glucosides (elaterin, elatericin B and
dihydro-elatericin B), pectins and albuminoids. Bitter substance is
colocynthin and colocynthetin. Roots contain a-elaterin, hentriacontane,
 and
saponins. Per 100 g, the seed is reported to contain 556 calories, 6.7 g
  H2O, 23.6 g protein, 47.2 g fat, 19.5 g total carbohydrates, 1.5 g fiber,
3.0 g ash, 46 mg Ca, and 580 mg P. The oil contains oleic, linoleic,
myristic, palmitic, and stearic acids. Seeds contain the phyto sterolin
(ipurand), 2 phytosterols, 2 hydrocarbons, a saponin, an alkaloid, a
  polysaccharide or glycoside, and tannin.
  Description

  Annual or perennial (in wild) herbaceous vine; stems angular and rough;
leaves rough, 3- to 7-lobed, 5-10 cm long, middle lobe sometimes ovate,
sinuses open; flowers monoecious, solitary, peduncled, axillary, corollas
5-lobed; ovary villous; fruit a pepo, nearly globular, 4-10 cm in
 diameter
with somewhat elliptical fissures, about size of small orange, green and
  yellow variegated

2010-07-06 Thread Tabish
I think these pictures are of Pancratium triflorum, as pointed out by
Dinesh. The book Flowers of Sahyadri illustrates the two species well.
The stamens are enclosed by a conical structure formed by a membrane -
this structure is very narrow in P. parvum whereas in P. triflorum it
is wide and its margin is cut into teeth.

  Hi friends,

Usha, Geeta and I had been to the forest at CEC, Goregaon, Mumbai today
morning and we saw the flower of Spider lily, the first wild flower seen
immediately after the first few showers.
I have attached the pics of Spider lily
 local name :पाणकुसुम
Bot. name : Pancratium parvum )
 famiily Amaryllidaceae

It is a perennial herb endemic to Western Ghats from the family
 of*Amaryllidaceae
*, which includes Nargis flower.  These large, white, fragrant and short
lived flowers often appear before the leaves. Stamens are enclosed in a
staminal cup (the stamens are fused to form a large cup, known as staminal
 cup.

 Etymology:

From the Greek pankratos = strength and Parvum = Small.

My query is : the plant is delicate and flowers are large. then why the
plant's bot. name is pancratium parvum?

 cheers,
 shubhada

The first photo is superbly captured! The mushroom stands out stark in that
patch of misty green. I saw my first *microlepiota procera *which was like a
small dinner plate in the national park here and marvelled at its size.

The *Boletus *mushroom perhaps matches its size except that its stem is much
thicker.

Re: [efloraofindia:40363] Jatropha curcus

2010-07-06 Thread tanay bose
*Jatropha curcas* Linnaeus, Sp. Pl. 2: 1006. 1753.

  *Manihot curcas* (Linnaeus) Crantz.

Shrubs or treelets, 2-5 m tall, with watery latex; bark smooth; branches
glaucous-gray, glabrous, sparsely lenticellate, pith larger. Stipules small;
petioles 6-18 cm; leaf blade rotund to ovate, 7-18 × 6-16 cm, papery, nitid
green and glabrous adaxially, gray-green and along nerves puberulent to
glabrous abaxially, base cordate, apex acute; palmate veins 5-7.
Inflorescences axillary, 6-10 cm; bracts lanceolate, 4-8 mm. Male flowers:
sepals 5, ca. 4 mm, connate at base; petals oblong, green-yellow, ca. 6 mm,
connate to middle, hairy inside; disk glands 5, nearly terete; stamens 10;
outer 5 filaments free, inner filaments connate in lower part. Female
flowers: pedicels elongate; sepals free, ca. 6 mm; petals and disk glands as
in male; ovary 3-locular, glabrous; styles bifid at apex. Capsules
ellipsoidal or globose, 2.5-3 cm, yellow. Seeds ellipsoidal, 1.5-2 cm,
black. Fl. Sep-Oct, fr. Oct-Dec.

*Jatropha curcas* seeds are the source of curcas oil, a very powerful
purgative, also used for making candles and soap, for lighting, and as a
lubricant. There is interest in the oil as a biofuel crop for areas too dry
for normal crops. The bark is used as medicine for lepriasis (leprosy),
itchy skin, eczema, chronic ulcers, etc.

Thanks a lot friends for all your support.

We finally drove down to Jabalpur State Forest Research Institute and found
all the trees that we were looking for. Not only Buchanania lanzan but we
also found saplings of white butea monosperma, Eleocarpus Ganitrus
(rudraksh), sterculia urens, mitragyna parviflora (krishna kadam) and many
 others.

On our way back we were driving through a reserve forest on National
Highway 12 and suddenly we came across this frangrance ( like that of
Michelia Champaka) which appeared to be coming from all directions.

We noticed the likely source of this fragrance soon after as patches of
white flowers atop large sized trees amidst the dense green, Have attached
them in this mail for identification if possible.

We have been trying for the last two years to get a 'Buchanania Lanzan'
sapling for our farm but we have been unsuccessful.

We are trying the 'germinating from seeds' option now but the
seed supplier in Bhopal kept telling us they will be available in march
 and
then april and now he says it would be available only in may.

I would be grateful for advice from you on what are the usual period of
availability of these seeds that may be germinated.

 rakesh

[efloraofindia:40375] Re: Lotus for ID 060710MN

2010-07-06 Thread Tabish
Mani, thanks for the additional information.
In the 2nd picture (lotus3.jpg), to the left of the flower you can see
a few leaves which have a deep cut on them, which goes up to the
middle - these should be Waterlily leaves. On the right of the flower,
you can see a big leaf which doesn't seem to have a cut, and the leaf
stalk is attached to the middle of the leaf, from below, like in an
umbrella. That should be a lotus leaf.

Re: [efloraofindia:40387] pics of Arisaema tortuosum

2010-07-06 Thread tanay bose
Dear Subhada ji,
I really appreciate your photographic skill and your knowledge in Biology.
The plant has been exceptionally well recorded through you lens and the
photos do provide a 3D image of the plant in the reader mind.

*Arisaema tortuosum* var. *curvatum* (Roxb.) Engler in Pflanzenr. 4, 23 F:
191. 1920.

*Vern.:* ‘Kiriki kukri’.

*Arisaema* *curvatum* (Roxb.) Kunth
*Arum* *curvatum* Roxb.

Usually monoecious but sometimes paradioecious. Leaves (1-)2, pedate;
leaflets 11-13, linear to lanceolate, 9-19 x 0.6-1.7 (-2.5) cm. Spathe
longer than the foliage, green, ribbed; tube 5.4-5 cm long, cylindrical,
gradually broadening into an ovate, caudate-acuminate limb, larger than the
tube. Spadix appendage 8-19 cm long , stout, at first curved and then
prolonged upright beyond the limb, black when dry. In monoecious forms the
male zone longer than the female. Stamens stalked; anther dehiscence porose.
Ovary ovoid, c. 1.5 mm long; style short, stigma discoid, papillate. Berry
6-7 mm broad. Seeds 4-5, ± angular-ovoid, testa rugose, coriaceous,
yellowish-brown.

Not common. The shape of the leaflets varies from linear-lanceolate to
lanceolate. The colour of the anthers is bright yellow to white (fide
Collett, l.c. 540). The type variety *tortuosum* (*Arum tortuosum* Wall. Pl.
Asia, Rar. 2: 10, t. 114. 1830) differs in the broad elliptic-ovate to
oblong-lanceolate leaves (4.6-10 x 2-4 cm) and the purple anthers (fide
Collett, l.c.). Collett mentions that it is also earlier flowering. Its
distribution is from Simla east to Burma.

A root extract is used as a vermifuge for cattle.

Commonly cultivated as a pot herb, *Ipomoea* *aquatica* is adapted to a
warm, moist climate and cannot survive frost. Several races are recognized
(without formal taxonomic designation) based on growing conditions
(terrestrial vs. aquatic) and plant and flower color (greenish plants with
white flowers vs. purplish tinged plants with lilac flowers). The plants
have minor medicinal uses and also are used for forage.
