Re: [efloraofindia:41619] Tree for ID| TQ17Jul10
This appears to be *Cordia dichotoma*. The leaves shown in the closeup is ovate whereas in Cordia dichotoma it is more roundish. Still I think this is *Cordia dichotoma* which matches most of the characteristics. Dear Kiran Ji, Today in the morning when I saw your reply I got bit arried waay and replied you back that this mushroom is *Clavulinopsis laeticolor *but while in the afternoon I was taking a nap suddenly it struck my brain that this can never be the mushroom you are referring to !! *Clavulinopsis** *is a genus which is known to have cylindrical body nither do Dinesh Ji’s mushroom nor yours have this character. Kindly see the image from the link below for the photo. *Photo: **http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Clavulinopsis_laeticolor.html* * * *Dacryopinax spathularia** *which I suggested earlier has a flat ligulate basidiocarp a character which match with the mushroom both of you have posted kindly see the photo from the link below. Photo: http://mushroomobserver.org/name/show_name?_js=on_new=trueid=4205 Rest decision is yours and Dinesh Ji’s , hope you will comply with the morphology of both the genera. Stipules spinescent and small 0.5 cm unlike long white thorns of *Acacia nilotica.* Pods is the identifying character. They are dark brown cylindrical as shown in the picture. This is a native tree and around 4-5 shrubby trees were observed in an open area in the Pune city, probably natural or may have been planted in the past. We had such a tree in the government house allotted to my father in Mhow, Dist Indore, MP where we lived from 1969 to 1972. Dianthus barbatus is commonly known as Sweet William. A prominent feature of Sweet William is that the flowers are borne in a compact ball-like head, carried on a stem. http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Sweet%20William.html Flowers of China Pinks (Dianthus chinensis) do not arise in such a compact bunch. Also, leaves of Dianthus barbatus are much broader, appearing to be elliptic/oval, whereas leaves of Dianthus chinensis are narrow, appearing to be lanceshaped. Well, i don't know the fine differences between the Dianthus varieties. But experts have spoken. Wiki says: The name Dianthus is from the Greek words dios (god) and anthos (flower), and was cited by the Greek botanist Theophrastus. moreover specially for your son: Dianthus species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Cabbage Moth, Double-striped Pug, Large Yellow Underwing and The Lychnis.
