[efloraofindia:61500] Re: Ipomoea for ID : 230111 : AK-3

2011-01-27 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Yes Aarti ji
That is not your case only, even for me who was supposed to be an expert
taxonomist way back in 1970-75 in Kashmir. When I joined Delhi University in
1975, I got so busy in teaching that my involvement with plants in nature
remained limited to local trips for students, and annual trips to places in
India.
Two things changed my life style: a digital camera presented by my son,
and my joining indiantreepix (thanks to Dr. Janamurty who introduced me to
this group (from TAXACOM, where I used to send my photographs)). It has
changed my life style. I am on lookout for visiting more and more places.
While in California, I have photographed plants in thousands (but upload
only those which are relevant to our Flora), and would plan my next visit in
a different months to catch new plants.
My primary interest still remains Himalayan Flora, and I would be
visiting different areas in different months to have the maximum catch. I am
planning Kashmir visit this time in July-August (peak season for high
altitude Flora), last time it was June.
I have often been thinking, if I had not joined this group, how would
have I spent my retirement days?. Now planning for future trips, clicking
new photographs, processing these, identifying these and interacting on the
group, keeps me much more busy than my days of active service. Luckily I
have another hobby of making videos from stills or clips from digicam. Many
of these are on the facebook for those interested.

Hello,

I think the plant in question is likely to be Ipomoea marginata ,
although I have some reservations.

Ipomoea marginata may have hairs on the leaves and stems or it may be
glabrous.

The leaf shape may be cordate or can vary to an almost sagittate
shape.

The purple blotches are not a requirement and are likely a response to
intense sunlight or other environmental factors.

I do see a difference in the coloration in the tube and throat which I
see as atypical in addition to a difference in the length and taper of
the tube.

The corolla measurements and tube characteristics are always important
whether mentioned as a key characteristic by any author or not...some
contemplation on this might be in order...

I also notice that the petiole on this plant has some stoloniferous
protrusions ( most visible in the 4th photo ) that are worthy of
notice and are not often seen in photos Ipomoea marginata.

Hope my observations may be of some value...

regards,

Ron

Dear Gurcharan ji,
Thanks for those encouraging words.
Around three years ago,I didn't know a single name of flora.By chance
I found flowersofindia site.My son who was here on a vacation,
encouraged me to send my pictures.Initially I was very reluctant...but
my son kept on reminding me.Out of five pictures that I sent, four were
added on the site.Tabish ji encouraged me a lot initially...how to
resize pictures,etc.
Thus slowly, this journey began.
Now in my spare time, I always have something to do...never get bored
and also get to learn so much.

I agree that the species is Ipomoea nil , although the Real "Scarlett
O'Hara" has a solid red corolla including a solid red tube...

The cultivar with white tube is "Wine & Roses"

Ipomoea triloba has much smaller flowers than Ipomoea cordatotriloba.

I would say Ipomoea cordatotriloba based on the size of the corolla in
relation to the leaves.

The 2nd photo contains much more detail that the 1st photo.

The plant seems to be consistent with some type of argyreia but I
could not say for certain but i will mention some noteworthy
characteristics that i see

1) the leaves are cordate

2) there stems have a fine whitish pubescence that is typical for
Argyreia type species

3) there is hair visible on the ribs extending the entire length of
the corolla

4) the secondary bracts at the base of the peduncle and pedicels are
quite different in structure as compared to the sepals

Food for thought...

2011-01-27 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Yes Shrikant ji
Very valid comment: "it is one but not the same"
Capparis zeylonica L. and C. horrida L.f had originally been described as
distinct species, C. horrida being also the plant which Roxb. called as C.
zeylonica (C. zeylonica Roxb. (non L.).
Most recent treatments (including eFlora of Pakistan, eFlora of China,
most importantly KEW & MBG The Plant List (which should be most widely
followed source in near future once the glitches (now many many) are
removed) treat C. horrida L.f. as synonym of C. zeylonica L., so they are
treated as one species, because the differences are not enough to treat them
as distinct species. So they are treated as one, although they are not the
same.

Re: [efloraofindia:61449] Re: Capparis zeylanica-Ceylon caper

2011-01-27 Thread Vijayasankar
I think Srikanth ji is right. FBI treats both the species separate and only
includes *Capparis zeylanica Roxb.* as synonym under *C. horrida L.f.*, and
*NOT* C. zeylanica L., which is a different species.
There may be some misunderstanding about this point, i guess.

Sorry for coming in late. I can see calyx not winged, flowers
pedicellate and pedicels not winged (to rule out C. decussata). Can't
go with the colour either. Can you indicate the size of the corolla?
If the calyx is keeled it could be C. khandalensis. If the pedicels
are winged, it could be C. pauciflora. Need more info to be sure.

2011-01-27 Thread Muthu Karthick
Dear all,
For *J.multiflorum* the calyx-lobes are 5 only.
For *J.malabaricum* the leaf apex should be acuminate; corolla lobes twisted
towards left. The ratio of leaf and flower (across-width) seems to go with *J.
malabaricum*.

Could this be any other species of *Jasminum*? please validate.
