[efloraofindia:77474] Re: hi Elaeocarpus sphaericus. Rudraksha flowers RARE Photos

2011-08-18 Thread Ushadi micromini
NOW, Dear USHA PRABHA JI:

I have always admired the blue berries of Elaeocarpus sphaericus
because of its sometimes shiny, sometimes iridescent
blue coat ( esp in digital photos) is very peaceful and delightful.

and Rudraksha beads are such an important part of our collective
religious heritage...I have wondered about the flowers..
Never seen them... let alone photograph them

 Thank you for showing these...

Once at a herbal garden local gardeners showed us some plant
with white flowers and said it was Rudraksha tree, but later
when the botanists came.. it turned out to be a sea-coast
salt resistant something... I do not recall the name...
that was almost 15 years ago... I can still see the flowers
and leaves clearly in my head but cant remember the name...

Thanks again.

Usha di

The wing petals and the shape of the leaves may not suggest that this
as V.vexillata.

In Vigna generally the wing petals are shorter than the standard
petals and the keel petals beaked (which is not visible in the
picture).

Few suggestions, please try avoid back light when you take close up

Key charecters;

In E. capense liniear (sometimes lanceolate) green bracts, long spike and
viscidly gladular hairs.

In E. roseum the bracts are *white with green nerves, elliptic ovate -

 Dear friends,

Attached photos of an *Eranthemum* species.
 Date/Time : April 3, 2011 at 8.31am IST
Location Place : near Bajpe, Mangalore
Altitude : ~146 ft (above mean sea level)
 GPS : 12.966247, 74.872797 (on Google maps http://goo.gl/maps/LwAp)

My plant is most probably same as Muthu ji's plant posted at

With lot of discussion recently on *Eranthemum*, and clarity received from

like any of them: *rosea / purpurascens / pulchellum*.

 Please help in ID.

Lots of confusion!
Please send us more information regarding the plant.
I think you have taken this picture away from the natural habitat of

Although the pictures are nice, no characters are clear to reach a

But, if you can get one or two leaves or a branch as a closeup shot,
things would be much easy. I can imagine the height from the picture,
but as I have mentioned in a previous mail please try collect pictures
from the ground and match it with the same on the tree with the aid of
a binocular or a zoomed picture and take a closeup shot.

2011-08-18 Thread Mahadeswara
Dear Muthuji,
Please check for the following characters for A.decurrens:
Bark smooth to deeply fissured, brown or dark grey to blackish;
branchlets angled with winged ridges which are decurrent with the
petioles, glabrous or sparsely hairy with minute appressed hairs.
If the characters are not compatible, it could be A.mearnsii only.
In Ooty both the species A.mearnsii and A.decurrence are available.
A.mearnsii is cultivated on commercial scale for the preparation of
the wattle extract , which is called the tanner's gold.
Infact, I collected the barks of both the species/ specimen for
phytochemical studies and preparation of tannin extracts, long
back . Unable to trace out the taxonomical details of the species
from my records.

Leaves with petiole 0.7–2.8 cm long, 1 gland at base of or to c. 7 mm
below lowest pair of pinnae

 Hallo,
some time back I had sent the link prinzessinnengarten.net in this forum.

Inspired by the fotos I saw there, I cultivated carrots in milk cartons. As
the snails were very eager to eat the leaves I hanged the cartons on this

This Idea of using wasteland or other places like garage roofs for this
purpose, is now spreading well in Germany, Schitzerland etc. Schools are
taking part in these actions and mayors and ministers come to see this
 garden.
 Here one more Link:

The text is in German but the Fotos don't need any comments.

 Enjoy.

basically 900% between 1998 and 2008, an annual average of over 20%.
However, the value of big-sized caterpillar fungus has increased more
dramatically than smaller size Cordyceps, regarded as lower
quality.[19]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordyceps#cite_note-Winkler2008-18

According to *Modern Marvels http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Marvels*,

The high value of cordyceps was evidently the reason it was one of only two
Chinese traditional medicines to be stolen in a brazen theft in British
Columbia. The stolen cordyceps has been estimated to have been worth Can
$38,000.

Soon after I wrote the message above, my mind would not let me rest, I
went to flowers of India site and searched for WHITE flowers, found
the picture I had in my mind... and the leaves matched, on page number
10 of white flowers at flowers of india dot comits white
berries I remember had some vertical grooves, but not the cerebral
sulcus like grooves of Rudraksha... The pictures are by our own
Prashant ji... *Scaveola taccada*

Googling got me another plant: *Scaevola plumierii* under
ASSESSMENT OF COASTAL PLANT DIVERSITY IN INDIA
at http://www.bsienvis.nic.in/coastal_plant.htm, which says it only on
the coast of Andhra Pradesh and Andaman...

WHAT I do not know is what's the difference in these two

I think this is indeed a Rubiaceae species, though I am not sure about

My thoughts are based on opposite leaves, interpetiolar stipules and
inferior ovary with persistent calyx.

Iobserved this plant near Paud in Ghat section by the roadside.
From a distance I thought it to be a Lamiaceae member.
On close observation the flowers appeared to be regular.
After going through earlier discussions and checking FFOS I think this
 is
   *Scoparia dulcis.*
This is a small herb with very smallflowers of about 8 mm.
Leaves are characteristic. In my specimen ...not exactly opposite but 3
 in
a whorl fashion. sessile with serrate margin.
The flower has 4 sepals and petals.I don't know how many stamens and
   carpels.
Earlier placed in Scrophulariaceae; now placed in Family
 Plantaginaceae.
From earlier discussion on the group
   ..dulcis means sweet.
..Interestingly it is called as sweet broom and also bitter broom.
.. I remember observing some different brooms in villages; these
 must
be from the dried twigs of this plant.

Re: [efloraofindia:77592] VALMIKI : OBSERVER OF NATURE 39

2011-08-18 Thread Madhuri Raut
Respected Bimalji,
I had a big Parijatak tree (1st flower) at my mothers home giving lots of
flowers. Esp in Shravan many people used to come to gather these flowers to
offer to God for what is called 'Lakholi' meaning offering One Lakh
flowers. It used to give me great pleasure to shake this tree to drop
flowers and collect them in inverted umbrellas for these people. Thanks for
sharing this story behind this lovely flower which I did not know.
There is also a mythological story about Parijatak which I would like to
share

During samudra manthan (churning of the ocean), the gods had obtained
Parijataka, the tree with divine fragrance. This tree was planted in the
garden of Indra, the king of gods. One day, SageNarada went to this garden
and collected some flowers that had fallen from the treeand gave them to
Rukmini, Krishna's wife. Rukmini was very happy but when Satyabhama, another
wife of Krishna, smelled its fragrance, she asked Krishna to bring her the
tree. After defeating Indra, Krishna brought the tree on earth. But a
quarrel started between Rukmini and Satyabhama, as both of them wanted the
tree.

Krishna planted the tree in Satyabhama's courtyard in such a way that its
flowers fell in Rukmini's house and in this way both his wives were happy.

Harsinghar in Hindi and Sephalika/Seoli in Bangla.Legand says that in the
earlier life this plant was a beautiful girl and was in love with Sun
God.As the Sun did not notice this unilateral love the girl died.A plant
came up at that place. As Sun neglected her the flowers of this plant fall on
the ground before the Sun rises.
