Dear Prabhu,

The information provided by you are very useful. Thank you for the
same. Such detailed information on any species of plant is appreciable and
this would certainly help people who learn a new species.

As Aggie Ji pointed out in his mail, it is apparent that the message
provided by you is from the webpage mentioned therein. We generally depend
many sites or web pages for information and getting valid information from
internet sometimes is very difficult. It would be good to mention the link
or source of the information you have got it from. So that we can make sure
that we are not violating any copy right rules, if any. Further, this would
certainly help others to follow through and go for gathering more
information, if needed.

Thanks and Regards,
Giby

... let us wait for any more photos from your end at any later date PLUS
comment(s) for this post.
The deeper colour could be attributed to this plant being a garden cultivar
... however, not stressing on the ID.

Re: [efloraofindia:80396] Re: Malvaceae week 09 05 2011 UD 008 Hibiscus rosa-chinensis various colors white

2011-09-08 Thread Satish Phadke
Usha di
I am of the same opinion as H S ji.
There is no species like *Hibiscus Rosa chinensis*.
http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/tro-27801139
There is species named *Hibiscus Rosa sinensis*.
http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/search?q=Hibiscus+rosa-sinensis

*Rosa chinensis* is a valid species but it belongs to family Rosaceae.
I request Gurcharan ji, Tanay or Pankaj to comment on this; so that the
doubts will get cleared and we will start using the correct name
henceforth even if both names are accepted.

[efloraofindia:80405] Malvaceae week

2011-09-08 Thread Satish Phadke
Malvaceae week is in full swing and everybody is enjoying it.
I was just checking about newly added families(or merged ones)in Malvaceae.
To my surprise
Bombacaceae
Tiliaceae and even
Sterculiaceae is now under Malvaceae.
In all there are more than 4200 species world over.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malvaceae
In Flora of Maharashtra BSI the list of Genera is
Malvaceae 16
Tiliaceae 5
Sterculiaceae 8
Bombacaceae 2
With many species in each.
So it would be a huge task to post the pictures.
Cheers.
Dr Phadke

2011-09-08 Thread Dinesh Valke
Gurcharan ji ... just matter of how time becomes available for me. And of
course depends on my collection to suit the week.

Fruits and Vegetables was almost the entire plant kingdom ... thus, any and
all in my collection was a favourable post.
Again, this Malvaceae has one of the biggest shares ... to top it, few other
families got within it.

Got some time at hand for some hours today ... and also have to compensate
for my irregular attendance !!

Regards.

I too had a Dev kapus plant at my home in my childhood. We too used the
cotton to make vaatis. It used to get lovely yellow flowers. We used to wait
for the pod to burst open and the cotton to come out. But there was
competition with sparrows for the cotton as they used it to line their
nests. I have not seen this dev kapus plant for years now. I tried to get
one from the nursery but it was not available
You mentioned about Mangalagauri and patris that reminded me of Aghada which
we used to make malas for Jivati . I have not seen this plant for years .
Anyone has any pictures?
We also had a lot of plants and trees like Bel, Adulsa, Gavati chaha,
Korphad, Aghada and Dhotra which I do not get to see anymore. It is a pity.

In my childhood we had a cotton plant in our garden, I do not know the

The cotton balles have seeds inside. In one variety all seeeds are
joined togather to form one bundle. This is considered as good cotton?
While the second one has its seeds seperate. For seperating the seeds
the first one is better, Because cleaning is easy.
we use to make the battis in lamps from this cotton. the plant was there
atleast for 10 to 11 years as per my memory. We use to cut it to keep the
proper height so that we can remove the cotton. One day it fail in rain

Re: [efloraofindia:80415] Malvaceae week

2011-09-08 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Just to add, this BSI list does not include all the common cultivated trees.
former Bombacaceae has already been uploaded with Bombax ceiba, Bombax
insigne, Ceiba pentandra, Ceiba speciosa, and with Pseudobombax to come
(only 2 in BSI list as mentioned by you). So expect much more, and with some
from outside India count this as one of the very successful episode like
Fruits and Vegetables, Lamiaceae and others.

I learnt my Botany from my grand ma. She and me had a habit of bringing
cutting of any dam plant available in near visinity and plant it around our
house. It was a jungle in the area of around 100 feet by 20 feet. All
Malvaceaes and Aposynaceae, paps and what not were there. Most of the
 plants
for which I have told vernacular names were in my jungle, healthy and
 flowering.
For Gauri, Ganapati and Mangalagauri we use to collect all patries
(leaves), from near by. So had to know the names. Nice were those days.
Thanks again. Will surely collect the seeds and photos too!

Re: [efloraofindia:80445] Malvaceae Week: Hibiscus surrattensis from TopSlip (MW-AR01)

2011-09-08 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Thanks Ragjhu ji
*I was waiting to see this, especially because of confusion in H. furcatus
status now.*
*
*
*Hibiscus furcatus Wall. is the synonym of H. surattensis L., a name used in
FBI and still holding true (fork has one spoon shaped appendage and one
small erect linear branch; stipules large leafy ear-shaped; leaves 3-5-fid)*
*
*
*Hibiscus furcatus Roxb. described in FBI and now correctly known as H.
hispidissimus Griff. (both forks linear; stipules lanceolate-oblong; leaves
entire or 3-lobed)*
*
*
*Hibiscus furcatus Willd., a synonym of Hibiscus rostellatus Guill. & Perr.
an African plant not found in India*
*
*
*Other expected species in India, cultivated or naturalised from this group
(forked epicalyx segments) include.*
*
*
*Hibiscus radiatus Willd. epicalyx 8-10, with linear fork segments, stipules
linear; leaves deeply 3-5 lobed.*
*
*
*Hibiscus acetosella: epicalyx 9-10, apically forked, leaves irregularly 3-5
lobed.*
*
*
*Hibiscus cannabinus looks similar to above two species but is distinct in
deeply 3-7-parted leaves and importantly with epicalyx segments not being
forked.*
*
*

Re: [efloraofindia:80497] Malvaceae week

2011-09-08 Thread Balkar Arya
Thanks Satish Ji and Gurcharan Ji.
Success of this week is beyond my imagination. I was thinking about in all
300 mails in this week. But till now about 630 mails in about 190 threads
have already appeared. Friday, Saturday and Sunday yet to come. I hope in
malvaceae week we shall be covering more than 200 different species in about
350 threads and more than a thousand mails. In this week it is jut like
celebrations of HOLI eg so many colors of hibiscus we are putting here.
I again thank you all for this grand response.
