[efloraofindia:202307] Neanotis (Rubiaceae)

2014-10-05 Thread J.M. Garg
Dear members,

I have updated eFI (efloraofindia) page on Neanotis

(Pl.
click).

Attempts have been made to incorporate most of the species available in
India & nearby areas with details & keys directly or through links as far
as possible. It’s quite possible that there may be some discrepancy in the
accepted names & synonyms taken from other links.

Species discussed so far in efloraofindia are given at the bottom of the
page in the form of links against Subpages. On clicking them one can see
all the details.

If someone can provide complete list of Indian species with source
references it will be wonderful.

Any comments/ corrections are welcome.

Re: [efloraofindia:202309] ID request 280914SP

2014-10-05 Thread J.M. Garg
Thanks a lot, Santhosh ji.
There seems to be some confusion regarding the name.
GRIn gives *Euodia* *ridleyi* Hochr. as a syn. of *Melicope denhamii *(Seem.)
T. G. Hartley
(1999),
while as per The Plant List Ver. 1.1, *Evodia* *ridleyi* Hochr.
 is a synonym
 of *Melicope denhamii *(Seem.)
T.G.Hartley

*Euodia* *ridleyi* Hochr.is a synonym
 of *Euodia* *suaveolens*
var. *ridleyi* (Hochr.) Bakh. f.
 as per The Plant
List Ver. 1.1

In view I am inclined to take it as *Melicope denhamii *(Seem.) T.G.Hartley
 unless some thing
else comes up.

[efloraofindia:202322] Leaves only but distinctive - ID possible ? - GE04102014-3

2014-10-05 Thread A.Sinha
Seen in the Chennai outskirts, wild.

This is a slender twining glabrous climber, only the leaves were seen,
they have a cordate base very narrow sinus and apex is mucronate.
Veins almost not visible except central, leaves held outward stiffly.

No flowers or fruit in August. Again I'm sorry no better images are
available.

Perhaps this Pentatropis, but I have not seen that plant before.
*Can it be given an ID to some degree of certainity ? *
*Thanks for any suggestions*

2014-10-05 Thread 'Wojciech Adamowski' via efloraofindia
Again - I am far, far away from my favourite plants and I know them mostly from
pictures...
Original description of I. bicolor depicts plant with rosa and yellow flowers -
upper petal completely and upper lateral petal partially are rosa, the rest of
flower yellow wit eventual markings. Such plants were found recently escaped in
Oregon.
Your plant is apparently not this form. I can try to recgnize it in my spare
time, but it would take more time.
There are at least 16 different species of Impatiens known from Himachal
Pradesh and there could be some still omitted by botanists. So keep your eyes
open on this interesting, but difficult genus.
I just checked posts on eFI group seeking for pictures of recently described I.
devendrae and I found it in this state and even in nearby Jammu & Kashmir.

Re: [efloraofindia:202343] Balsam

2014-10-05 Thread 'Wojciech Adamowski' via efloraofindia
By the way, for the future:
1) do more than one picture of flowers, at least en face (frontal) view and
lateral view
2) picture of leaves (shape, colour of lower side, arrangement) and stem
(colour, swollen nodes, additional structures like wings, glands) could be very
useful
3) note the height of plant and its life form - many are annuals with single
branched or unbranched stem, some perennials (I don't know if any of west
Himalayan), some more tropical even shrubby.
4) put your finger into the photo, especially for flowers - this gives better
orientation how big things are
Of course, place of observation and habitat are a must for proper
identification :-).
And even with this all there is no sureness if identification will be possible
- there is a lot of work for botansists with this fascinating genus...
Good luck Wojciech

Your plant is apparently not this form. I can try to recgnize it in my

There are at least 16 different species of Impatiens known from Himachal

[efloraofindia:202356] Efloraofindia website updated upto 30th Oct.'14- more than 10,000 species

2014-10-05 Thread J.M. Garg
 Dear members,

It's heartening to reiterate that *Efloraofindia*
*
is the largest google e-group/ forum in the world *in this field & the
largest nature related e-group (and the most constructive) in India with
more than 2,02,000 messages so far & membership currently at more than 2425
nos.

Efloraofindia website
 has now been updated upto
30th Oct.'14 along with completion of resurfacing work upto this date. *It
has the largest database on net on Indian Flora with more than 2,00,000
pictures of more than 10,000 species. *Members should add Efloraofindia
 website
 link in their favourites
& give species’ links from this while posting or replying in a thread as
lot of discussed data is already available here.

Intent of this website is compilation of all the posts on 'efloraofindia'
e- group along with providing other details so that it’s useful to all
concerned as all the data about a particular species will be available
under a single head & *easily searchable*. However, correctness of data/
identification in the efloraofindia (earlier indiantreepix) links is
dependent on the members’ inputs in that particular link. Therefore,
errors/ mistakes cannot be ruled out-everyone is requested to point them
out for corrections by sending an e-mail to .
Efloraofindia e-group members can also add comments about it after 'signing
in' at the bottom of the page.

More important is the fact that thousands of observations of hundreds of
our members are available here (many of which one will not find documented
anywhere) & easily searchable through general web searches (after adding
efloraofindia) as well as by searching in the Efloraofindia
 website
. And these are going to
increase with every passing day. These original observations will be a
treasure trove & will a delight to a lot of people. With the pace at which
new species are being added to our database, it should become the premier
resource for taxonomic research in India. As the data is multiplying, we
need more volunteers to take up this work. Details can be seen at Volunteers
required
.

For better viewing of species' pages, colour scheme & formatting is being
followed as below while editing any pages in future:

Description of the species, Details of other flora species on the same page,
Details of other than flora species on the same page, Uses/harms,
Distribution/Abundance/Location, Habit & Habitat, Etymology & pronunciation,
Other Interesting Information, stories etc., Others, *Botanical names*, *Common
names, **Main point of discussion below,* Discussion about botanical names.

These days a lot of inf. about Indian Flora is available under Cc-by license
 (Licensees may
copy, distribute, display and perform the work and make derivative works
based on it only if they give the author or licensor the credits in the
manner specified by these). Due credits/ attributions are to be given. Such
sources include Wikipedia, India Biodiversity Portal, IUCN Red List, PFAF,
Flora of Tibet website etc. I am trying to add such inf. with due credits.
I am also trying to add keys & summarizing the information at the top of
the page (for the pages I am coming across while adding information from
current threads). Genera pages are also cleaned up so that species (due to
wrong botanical names or being syn. of some other species) are deleted or
properly connected as per the current accepted name along with references.
Future eFI genera pages will be like *Cyanotis*

depending upon the time I get as & when I update a genus page so that we
are aware which are the species which are likely to be found in India
(depending on the net resources) & which are already available in eFI.

Monthly family fortnights

organized by Dr. Gurcharan Singh among others have become a great source of
information for efloraofindia website. Lots of family experts, from inside
as well as outside, are contributing their expertise during these

I was happy to find the hillsides covered in wild geraniums on my walk this
morning, competing well with foldwing, isodon, catmint and balsam. I assume
these to be the Himalayan Geranium but they could also be Wallich Geranium.
There are two different hues too, the second has more cyan and a lighter,
almost white centre(the other behind the one I am holding in the second
picture). Please help with correct identification.

Re: [efloraofindia:202363] Shrub ID from Bangladesh SM166

2014-10-05 Thread surajit koley
I think it may be a cultivar of *Jasminum auriculatum* Vahl.

However, following FBI species have minute (or very small) calyx lobes,
some are pubescence while others are glabrous -

   1. *J. roxburghianum* Wall. = petioles half an inch or more
   2. *J. auriculatum* Vahl = in cultivation erect bush; mostly simple
   ovate leaves; calyx five notched
   3. *J. arborescence* Roxb. = calyx teeth 2.5 mm or more
   4. *J. trichotomum* Heyne = allied to *J. arborescence* var. *montana*
   5. *J. lanceolaria* Roxb. = a large climber
   6. *J. heterophyllum* Roxb. = leaves alternate, simple and trifoliolate

Thank you
Regards

Dear All:
I must say the species pages that Gargji has so painstakingly made and
keeps updating is really showing its usefulness to all non botanists too.
I appreciate them now more than ever.

Surajit: you have certainly blossomed, so no bashfulness, please. My mom
says one has to learn to accept gifts as much as we learn to give gifts.
so, accept it please.

Everybody else is much appreciated.

My circle of sick friends and family are not all out of the woods or died,
so I may have to excuse myself from time to time.

But its good to be able to see new submissions, especially those that are
brilliantly photographed with great details and love,.

[efloraofindia:202380] Tephrosia- Fabaceae (Leguminosae)

2014-10-05 Thread J.M. Garg
Dear members,

I have updated eFI (efloraofindia) page on Tephrosia (Pl.
