The book was released yesterday (8th February, 2012) by Prof. MS Swaminathan at the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai. The first copy of the book was handed to Mr. N. Ram, Director, Kasturi Sons Limited (Publishers of the Hindu). Ms. Tara Gandhi, naturalist and student of Dr. Salim Ali has written the foreword to the book. It is a book containing photographs, species information and anecdotal accounts of 200 common animal and plant species found in and around Chennai. Common butterflies and other insects, birds, flowering plants and trees, all find a place in this beautifully brought out book. The book has more than 200 colour photographs and is printed entirely on art paper. The book is an attempt to kindle the interest of children, budding biologists and interested amateurs in the fascinating world of nature. On Thu, Feb 2, 2012 at 2:38 PM, raman raman_arunacha...@yahoo.com wrote: Beaucarnea recurvata, the Ponytail palm (though it is not a true palm) is a species of Beaucarnea. The ponytail palm is native to the states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosí in eastern Mexico.[1] The plants have a very noticeable caudex, for the purpose of storing water. Beaucarnea recurvata, or Ponytail Palm, is native to Mexico. Beacarneas are closely related to Yuccas and thrive under the same conditions. Plants have dark green, grass-like leaves that are 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide by 6 foot (2 m) long. They have swollen bases for water storage and can store water up to 1 year. Plants in nature will reach about 30 feet (10 m) in height with a base about 12 feet (4 m) across. In containers, they will only reach about 8 foot (2.5 m) in height. They make an excellent houseplant if they are not over-watered. No camera right now and I am still working with my Iphone 4 camera. I would also be meeting one of my very good old school friend, after 20 years most probably. http://www.20woc.com.sg/site/ And tomorrow, I would be going out to field early morning, for the first time in Hong Kong. And if luck favours, we will get to see the wild population of Paphiopedilum purpuratum, one of the very rare lady slipper orchids which is getting lost from wild due to its illegal collection for gardens. So I would be out of touch from EFLORA for a while. May be checking on phone, but would prefer to save battery for photography!!. Hopefully I will return back with lot of Orchid pics.
