 Dear friends,

I am very happy to announce that I have finished authoring a book called
'Nature Rambles' which showcases urban biodiversity. The book was released
yesterday (8th February, 2012) by Prof. MS Swaminathan at the MS
Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai. The first copy of the book was
handed to Mr. N. Ram, Director, Kasturi Sons Limited (Publishers of the
Hindu). Ms. Tara Gandhi, naturalist and student of Dr. Salim Ali has
written the foreword to the book.

It is a book containing photographs, species information and anecdotal
accounts of 200 common animal and plant species found in and around
Chennai. Common butterflies and other insects, birds, flowering plants and
trees, all find a place in this beautifully brought out book. The book has
more than 200 colour photographs and is printed entirely on art paper.

The book is an attempt to kindle the interest of children, budding
biologists and interested amateurs in the fascinating world of nature.

The book is available on www.flipkart.com

Beaucarnea recurvata, the Ponytail palm (though it is not a true palm) is
a species of Beaucarnea. The ponytail palm is native to the states of
Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosí in eastern Mexico.[1] The plants
have a very noticeable caudex, for the purpose of storing water. Beaucarnea
recurvata, or Ponytail Palm, is native to Mexico. Beacarneas are closely
related to Yuccas and thrive under the same conditions. Plants have dark
green, grass-like leaves that are 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide by 6 foot (2 m)
long. They have swollen bases for water storage and can store water up to 1
year. Plants in nature will reach about 30 feet (10 m) in height with a
base about 12 feet (4 m) across. In containers, they will only reach about
8 foot (2.5 m) in height. They make an excellent houseplant if they are not
 over-watered.

Could this be *Barleria* sp.? perhaps *B.cristata*?

Next the mosses never flower because they are from the group of non-

 a
sporophyte. You can check the life cycle of moss from the link below.

I feel happy to inform you that I would be leaving for Singapore on
12th (Saturday) early morning to attend 20th World Orchid Conference.
This will be my first WOC. Will be staying there at Robertson Quay,
for 1 week and seeing whole world of orchids and meeting orchid
experts from throughout the world!! No camera right now and I am still
working with my Iphone 4 camera. I would also be meeting one of my
very good old school friend, after 20 years most probably.

 http://www.20woc.com.sg/site/

And tomorrow, I would be going out to field early morning, for the
first time in Hong Kong. And if luck favours, we will get to see the
wild population of Paphiopedilum purpuratum, one of the very rare lady
slipper orchids which is getting lost from wild due to its illegal
 collection for gardens.

So I would be out of touch from EFLORA for a while. May be checking on
phone, but would prefer to save battery for photography!!.

Hopefully I will return back with lot of Orchid pics.

Best regards and thanks so much to all for their good wishes and
 blessing in advance :)

2011-09-09 Thread Muthu Karthick
I will do a clear photography within this week of this plant in that
particular location and upload with more minute details.

Yes sir, all photographs belong to same plant; the plant was not so erect

Strangely the leaves look similar (cordate, palminerved and long
petioled) but Muthu ji's plant has epicalyx and a bladdery calyx. Let us
look for something else for this plant. Thanks for pointing out, Dinesh ji.

You may please visit http://www.dpreview.com and go for a through

personally suggest you to go for Panasonic Lumix series compact

 need to take macro pictures.
Even point and shoot Panasonic cameras are doing fantastic job.

You may please consult Dr Dinesh Valke who uses a Panasonic DMC-G1

is little expensive than that of your budget, I gues (about 40k). But

 MeSome species of
Lepidium: Perhaps L. apetalum, although I can see some petals, otherwise L.
pinnatifidum, if petals 2/3 as long as sepals and lower leaves pinnatifid.
In both mature fruit should be 2-3 mm broad.
In species of Lepidium size of mature fruit (l x b), notch and its depth,
presence and relative size of sepals and petals are important.

Muthu ji, It is Leucas aspera from Lamiaceae family. It is found on
the borders of rice fields in Kerala. In malayalam we call it Thumba and it
is used for floral arrangement during Onam festival.

 Regards,

 Mani.
