Problems setting up a CVS pserver

2002-02-07 Thread Gek

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I set up my little pserver in a chroot environment (accoring to
http://www.unixtools.org/cvs/server-how-to.html) and added a code
repository and imported a module. But for some reasons I can't check
it out lateron. I have almost no experience with CVS (used SourceSafe
so far, but CVS seems to better fit my needs), so please be gentle
with my stupidity.

So I create a new repository:
:cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot-cmx init
:*CVS exited normally with code 0*

I import some files:
:cvs import -I ! -I CVS -W *.attributes -k 'b' -W *.gif -k 'b' -W
*.jpg -k 'b' -W *.psd -k 'b' -m no message cmx CMS beta
:N cmx/About.java
[snip some more files]
:No conflicts created by this import
:*CVS exited normally with code 0*

And finally I try to checkout the module again:
:cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot-cmx checkout -P cmx
:cvs checkout: in directory cmx:
:cvs checkout: cannot open CVS/Entries for reading: No such file or
directory
:cvs [server aborted]: can't chdir(/root): No such file or directory
:*CVS exited normally with code 1*

What does the error message mean, and how can I get rid of it? There
is no CVS directory in the repository. When I create the repository,
I get a CVSROOT directory, but no CVS/Entries.

Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Use the -c option to copy the module file, sorted, to the standard output, instead of creating or modifying any files or directories in your working directory.

It merely shows a sorted modules file. IMHO, CVS Admin needs to include your project in a modules file

RE: cvs advice

2002-02-07 Thread Daniels, David

First, get Karl Fogel's excellent 'Open Source Development with CVS'. Create
a test repository with some dummy modules and do some experimentation.
Concentrate on the concepts and the syntax will come. It's really not too
hard once you get the hang of it.

Subject: cvs advice

Hi all,

I´m totally new to CVS and I wonder if someone who is not a programmer,
engineer... with a little knowledge about RCS should be able to manage this
tool. I´m talking about me, obviously.

I read the info-cvs e-mails every day, the cederqvist and everything that I
find but I´m not very sure. The program has not be installed yet (don´t know
which version is going to run) but the day is arriving...and I´m terrified.

I´m suppose to keep the files in the repository (checkin, checkout), do
backups and that´s all. I hope so

Any advice to start?

Thanks a lot

Re: Problem with recursive cvs edit command

2002-02-07 Thread David Fuller

There are a lot of weird behaviors with ampersand modules because they
aren't fully implemented. This appears to be one of them.

On Wed, 6 Feb 2002, Dan wrote:

 peculiarity.

I've got a modules file that looks like:

 moduleA -d moduleA path1/moduleA
 moduleB -d moduleB path1/moduleB
 AllModules moduleA moduleB

I then checkout AllModules and end up with a directory tree locally like:

 AllModules
 moduleA
 moduleB

which is what I would expect. I can commit, get status, get logging, etc.
at any point in the tree and everything works just fine.

If however I do a 'cvs edit' on moduleA, and moduleA has sub-directories
(let's say suba for example - which has a file in it called filea), then I
 get the following error:

cvs -z9 edit (in directory C:\AllModules\moduleA)

cvs [edit aborted]: cannot find suba/filea: No such file or directory

*CVS exited normally with code 1*

If I do a 'cvs edit' on 'suba' directly however it works fine, and all the
files in suba are marked edit:

cvs -z9 edit (in directory C:\AllModules\moduleA\suba\)

*CVS exited normally with code 0*

Any help for this novice cvs user would be greatly appreciated.

Keyword Substitution in Scripts

2002-02-07 Thread Vishal Jain

Hello,

If $Log$ appears anywhere in a script it would be expanded while CVS
checkin. Does anyone got in any troubles with this scenario yet? Though
chances are less as we always enlcose the variable name in brackets ( ie
$(Log) or ${Log} ) or keep it boldface ( LOG instead of Log ). But what can
be done if some programmer leaves it like $Log$someothervariable. I tried
with one of my scripts and CVS commit replaces it with Log message. If I
disable the keyword substitution then it is all other issue.

does not require that you have mymodule checked out (and will, in fact,
ignore it completely if you have) and will tag the most recent revision

don't have any way of knowing for sure which revision that is.

With CVS 1.11, you can just do cvs version (that's a command, not an
option, so no -) to get both the client and server version information
in one shot.

Read from remote host 192.168.0.1: Connection reset by peer
cvs [commit aborted]: end of file from server (consult above messages
 if any)

That indicates that the server is closing the connection. That could be
because it is crashing, or it could be because you've got some kind of
access control software (e.g., tcpd) that's denying access to the
server. Look in the server's TempDir (usually /tmp) for leftover
cvs-serv* directories and core files -- if there aren't any, the server
isn't crashing.

I think it is stored in the registry. I took a quick look at my registry and
found what looks like the file menu setting, but I couldn't figger out the
magic.

What I usually do when someone has your problem is to turn wincvs on, wait
until it is done (which may take 10 or 20 minutes) and the switch off flat
mode. Some times it takes forever to come back, but I have yet to see it
never come back. Maybe you should go to lunch while you are waiting. Or go
home for dinner . . . .

I also greatly suggest that you never use the root as a working directory.
Then if you accidentally press the button again, it won't take forever to
come back again.

Good luck

 3. What other problems can I expect?

 - When files move in or out of Attic directories, symlinks break. This
happens when files are removed on the main trunk, or added on a branch
and then commited to the main trunk.

 - When a file is removed (via cvs remove), then every symlink pointing
to it appears removed; it's necessary to manually break the symlink
before doing a cvs remove. Breaking the link meaning that the object
to be removed is an actual object, and not a link, and has no links
 pointing at it.

 - Older versions of CVS didn't handle symlinks right; they did not
chase the link and acquire locks in the right places. this was
 fixed around 1.10.3.

Are you talking about symlinking files or symlinking directories? It sounds
like your talking about symlinking files, which I am not trying to do. I'm
just interested in symlinking directories.

That's a known bug -- you have to create the ~/.cvspass file by hand (an

You need CVS 1.11.1p1 or newer (note that there are no newer releases

takes module/file names ala checkout and doesn't require a working

Re: Cvswrappers -W

2002-02-07 Thread Larry Jones

Nicholas Catanchin writes:

Could somebody just confirm for me the order in which CVS reads and
organises the wrappers? What I'm interested in specifically is the
entries in the $cvsroot\cvswrappers file and the wrappers specified on
the command line of an import.
About 2 weeks ago I could have sworn that wrappers on the command line
were overwriting all other wrappers. Now, all of a sudden, it seems as
if wrappers in the cvswrappers file in the repository are taking over.

The wrappers are organized sequentially: first the ones from the
repository, then the ones from your home directory, then the one
(singular) from the $CVSWRAPPERS environment variable, then the ones
from the command line, then the ones from the directory being imported.
The first matching entry is the one used, so wrappers in the repository
do take precedence over ones specified on the command line.

Things are a bit more complicated in the case of client/server, because
both the client and the server do wrapper processing. Basically, the
client reads the ones from your home directory, the environment
variable, and the command line and sends them all to the server as
command line options. The server then follows the above process.

All released versions of CVS have a bug in client/server mode in that
the client doesn't send a wrapper entry to the server unless it
specifies some non-default option. (This is fixed in the current
development version.)

Making Tag on a branch-question

2002-02-07 Thread Jeeva Sarma

Hi
I have a question regarding tags made on branches.
I have branched our tree with the branch name 2.0.
After some days,I wanted to make a tag on the branch
for QA testing purpose.I checked out from the branch
and then tagged it from that working directory with
cvs tag -r 'tag_on_branch_name' modulename
Is this the correct procedure?
One developer insists that when he checked out from
the branch,he doesn't get the latest files from that
branch and has to do a
cvs update -r tag_on_branch_name
to get the latest files. As a result,he cannot commit
because of the sticky tag.
I told him that he should get the latest files from
the branch by checking out from the branch regardless
of the tag.Isn't this correct?
Pls clarify.
Thanks a lot,
Jeeva Sarma

 - When files move in or out of Attic directories, symlinks break. This
happens when files are removed on the main trunk, or added on a branch
and then commited to the main trunk.

 - When a file is removed (via cvs remove), then every symlink pointing
to it appears removed; it's necessary to manually break the symlink
before doing a cvs remove. Breaking the link meaning that the object
to be removed is an actual object, and not a link, and has no links
 pointing at it.

Are you talking about symlinking files or symlinking directories? It sounds

I was mistakenly talking about symlinking files.

like your talking about symlinking files, which I am not trying to do. I'm

Correct behaviour of status command?

2002-02-07 Thread Donald Sharp

In the file MINOR-BUGS there is this entry:

* cvs status has a difference in its output between local and
client/server mode. Namely there's a tab character followed by a
ctime(3)-style date string at the end of the Working revision:
  field.

Looking at the status command it's not apparent what date/time
should be displayed here( if at all ).

In local mode the date/time stamp that is output is the same
as what the CVS/Entries file has for the date time stamp.
The CVS/Entries time date stamp is different depending
on whether or not you have updated or checked out the file.
On original checkout the time date stamp placed into the
CVS/Entries file is the time/date stamp that was the time/date of
the last commit into the repository for that file. On
update the CVS/Entries file time/date stamp is updated
to the time/date of the update when the user runs the update.

In server mode no date/time stamp is output, this is because
there is no way the cvs server can look at the CVS/Entries
file that is local to the client machine.

Would it be apropriate to just modify the cvs status command
to not output a date time string?

 cvs tag -r 'tag_on_branch_name' modulename

Almost certainly not. If that's really the command you typed, you
applied a tag of modulename to the revision/branch specified by
'tag_on_branch_name'. Usually, you do not specify a specific revision
to tag with -r, you just tag the currently checked-out revision in your
working directory. And one usually doesn't use the module name as a tag
name, it's too confusing.

One developer insists that when he checked out from
the branch,he doesn't get the latest files from that

Who knows? Your description is too confused to follow. Perhaps you
could do a cvs status -v on one of the files and share it with us so
we could get some clue as to what you really did and are doing.

RE: import vs cvs co -c

2002-02-07 Thread Teala Spitzbarth

you need to explictly checkout the CVSROOT directory either locally on
the server or on a client system by doing:

cvs co /yourpathtorepository/CVSROOT
cd /yourpathtorepository/CVSROOT
vi modules
add your new modules with the correct syntax
cvs ci modules

Now the module will recognized by CVS on your server and you can do
operations using it...

cheers,
