Re: Info-cvs Digest, Vol 27, Issue 40

2005-02-16 Thread David A. Bartmess
When you added the files, did you specify "-kb" for the add command for the
binary jar files? If not, you'll have to change the status of the files using
the cvs admin command as follows:

cvs admin -kb myJarFile.jar
cvs update -A myJarFile.jar

cvs commit

This will reset the status of the jar file(s) to a binary format, meaning no
translation will be done on the file. Then you copy the "good" version back
over the sandbox (corrupted) version, and commit it.

If you imported (created a NEW module under CVS by importing the entire
directory structure), it "should have" noted the binary status automatically
because of the magic numbers, but sometimes it can make mistakes.

For future reference and possible use now, you can checkout and modify the
CVSROOT/cvswrappers file from the repository, and add the filename pattern in
the syntax:

pattern option 'value' [option 'value' ...]
for example, add the following line to make all *.jar files binary when added.
*.jar -m 'COPY' -k 'b'

This tells CVS when a jar file is added, use the "COPY" merge strategy (it
keeps a complete copy of the file, instead of just the delta version), and to
mark it as binary mode in the CVS status for the file.

if you modify the cvswrappers file BEFORE you import, you should be able to
avoid this hassle...

Hope this helps!

You need to make sure they are of type binary, either when importing
or later with the admin command. Once this is fixed you need to check
if the files in the repository are ok. As they are probably not you need
to commit working versions. After then the checkout should work fine.

Please search in the archives, look for "binary files", this has come
up many times.

You already got an answer that told you to make sure that the file
type is binary. If you didn't understand this answer (it might be a bit
difficult for cvs-newbies) you should ask a more specific question
e.g. how to change the file type to binary or whatever.

Please read the mails you get.

Anyway, look into the manual, there's a whole section (9) about
binary files.

Using 'update -A' will reset any sticky tags. What if his file is

cvs commit
Why would you need to do this? I thought that keywords were only
expanded when the file was updated/checked-out/exported, so that the
file in the repository should be okay; just the working version is
corrupted.

The instructions I've given our users is to do this:
cvs admin -kb
cvs update
which has always seemed to work in the past. Are there situations where
the repository file could be corrupted, so that this wouldn't work?

Yes: if the client system differentiates between text and binary files
(Unix-like systems do not, Windows does). You might get lucky, but
reading a binary file as text almost always results in corruption.

Not necessarily. If you are operating from a machine that uses CR/LF
(for example, Windows), than the CR/LF was converted on check in, thus,
the repository version is corrupted, too.

If you are working from Unix boxes solely, this works as expected. If
not, chances are you have to check in a new binary file.

Mark, I think you owe an apology.

My computer got very offended. After all, it's not the _computer_'s fault
