[info-tech] auditorium projector

2004-02-27 Thread Brad Kruse

We installed a new lighting and sound system in our auditorium and want to add a projection device also. We want to drop this down from ceiling about12 feet and project to a drop down screen(approx. 12 x 12) from about 25 feet away.
I am sure some of you have done this to your auditorium and I wondering if you could help me out with avendor or solution. I have visited with Rick's some on this but they told me they have not had much experience with this type of projection but is looking into it for us.

[info-tech] Computer Security...

2004-02-27 Thread Jeremy Pearson

Good morning-

 We have had some people
objecting to our computer security here in Fort Dodge, and I wanted to check
into what everyone else allows people to do on the computers in the
classroom. We are slowly rolling out a program called Deep Freeze, which
discards all changes to the computer on reboot. With our WindowsXP
machines, we have successfully redirected the user's desktop, favorites, my
documents and most system settings to a network folder, which follows the user
from one XP machine to another.

So, in your districts, what is
the practice or policy for allowingthe following modifications to a user
computer:

  Desktop
Settings - Do you allow changes to Backgrouds, shortcuts on the desktop,
screen savers, etc

  Do you allow
saving to the local hard drive, or restrict saving to the network
only

  How about
disk space quotas - how much do you allow a user to store on the
network

  Use of e-mail
programs - do you have district supported programs, or can they use anything
they want

  Installing
programs on the machine - both district-supported and personal
software

  Do you allow
computers to be used without any connection to the network

 Do you
allow people to connect personal peripherals to the computer that require
software - digital cameras, zip drives, cd-burners, scanners,
etc...

  In what
method do you suggest people move data from school to home for work - usb flash
keys, floppy, e-mail

 Sorry for all of the
questions. We are trying to get some baseline data for security that other
schools are using. If you would help us out, I would appreciate it.
I would be happy to compile all of the data and return it to the list, should
there be any interest for that. Again, thanks for any help!!! Have a
great weekend!!!

So, in your districts, what is the practice or policy for allowingthe following modifications to a user computer:
* we do this through Novell Zenworks*
Desktop Settings - Do you allow changes to Backgrouds, shortcuts on the desktop, screen savers, etc
* students have no rights to do any of the abovefaculty and my student techs get some extra rights to desktop use
Do you allow saving to the local hard drive, or restrict saving to the network only
* allow saving to hard drive and just ghost periodically
How about disk space quotas - how much do you allow a user to store on the network
* home folders get 20mb max with additional if a good reason...some groups like publications, etc. receive more if they belong to the group
Use of e-mail programs - do you have district supported programs, or can they use anything they want
* districted supported Novell Groupwise for 9-12 and Gwise webaccess mailfor grades and staffthey are allowed to use their own web mail if they wish
Installing programs on the machine - both district-supported and personal software
*no one is to install software to system except for tech. coord or get approval first
Do you allow computers to be used without any connection to the network
*no, zenworks is set to not allow
Do you allow people to connect personal peripherals to the computer that require software - digital cameras, zip drives, cd-burners, scanners, etc...
no, however the usb memory devices are starting to come into the labshave not moved on it yet
In what method do you suggest people move data from school to home for work - usb flash keys, floppy, e-mail
use of district email attachments or their own web mailif too large of attachment, then we make arrangements to burn it to cd or copy to usb memory

NO - Faculty is not allowed to make any of these
  changes

Do
you allow saving to the local hard drive, or restrict saving to the network
  only
NO - Saving is to network drives only for a couple reasons.
Firstdata backup...if they loose data (and they do) I can get it back.
Second if I need to switch out or reimage a computer I don't have to waste
  time with local data

How
about disk space quotas - how much do you allow a user to store on the
  network
? - In the past we limited students to 20MB and staff 100MB. We
have increased our storage capacity and have not enforced quotas, but will if
  it gets out of hand.

Use
of e-mail programs - do you have district supported programs, or can they use
  anything they want
We use outlook so all staff either use thethe outlook
  client or outlook web access.

Installing programs on the machine - both district-supported and personal
  software
NO- Faculty is not allowed to install programs on their
  own.Several reasons, licensing, security,
  imaging

Do
you allow computers to be used without any connection to the network
All teachers have a production computer that is attached to the
network. As we retire computers teachermay ask for additional
computersas stand alones, not connected to the networkfor skill and drill type

Do you allow people to connect personal peripherals to the computer that

NO- Weprovide the equipment if need to

We suggest email and are starting to look at usb key

 Good morning-

We have had some people objecting to our computer security here

to
a network folder, which follows the user from one XP machine to
 another.

So, in your districts, what is the practice or policy for
allowing
the following modifications to a user computer:

Desktop Settings - Do you allow changes to Backgrouds,
shortcuts on the desktop, screen savers, etc

We have found it is easier to allow staff to control ther own desktop,
screensaver, etc. It gives them some ownership I guess. Initially we
had roaming profiles, but at the time did not have the bandwidth to
support it. There info is stored on the network though (documents,
etc.). This allows for quick re-imaging if a machine has problems.

Do you allow saving to the local hard drive, or restrict
saving
 to the network only

They save to the network.

How about disk space quotas - how much do you allow a user
to
 store on the network

100 MB except for special circumstances (i.e. music program .mp3 and
.wav files)

Use of e-mail programs - do you have district supported
programs, or can they use anything they want

We have two ways to access email, the Groupwise client and WebAccess.
No other way is supported.

Installing programs on the machine - both district-supported
 and personal software

We only allow district supported software, and of course no one brings
software in and intalls it without our knowledge. That would just be
wrong. ;)

Do you allow computers to be used without any connection to
the
 network

Special circumstances only.

Do you allow people to connect personal peripherals to the
computer that require software - digital cameras, zip drives,
 cd-burners, scanners, etc...

I am assuming by personal you mean they own the hardware. The answer
to that is no. We have had some problems with that in the past.
Someone buys the Staples special scanner, installs it, and it becomes
our problem when the thing doesn't work the way it is supposed to or it
screws something else up. As if we all don't have enough to do.

In what method do you suggest people move data from school
to
home for work - usb flash keys, floppy, e-mail

We find email is the easiest. If it is large (presentation, etc.) we
will let them sign out a laptop.

Sorry for all of the questions. We are trying to get some
baseline
data for security that other schools are using. If you would help
us
out, I would appreciate it. I would be happy to compile all of the
data
and return it to the list, should there be any interest for that.
Again, thanks for any help!!! Have a great weekend!!!

We have a Ricoh copier which will do high speed document scanning. The
problem is that it comes out as a PDF file and we can't edit the document.

If your scanner can save as a TIFF document or you have a high speed
document scanner, this software is free and it will convert your scanned
documents into a word document.

I had been searching and I have tried some, but this is working best for
us.

I got quotes for OCR converters for our Ricoh from $250 to $3100 but this
free one has worked better than all of the ones we tried.
