[info-tech] Secondary Internet connection

2009-04-09 Thread Karl Hehr
With this mornings outage it got me thinking. OUr ICN connection is
usually quite sound, but do any districts have a secondary connection
to the internet?

I am considering it, either bump the one I have or get an additional one. I
understand the catch is getting e-rate to pay for that second connection. That

[info-tech] Internet Status

2009-04-09 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
Internet is back up now. ICN and myself are not quite sure what caused the
problem. We will continue to monitor the issue, but for now everything is
working.

FYI: About a year ago I setup the Internet Response Hotline If you are
experiencing an outage please call their first as my phone typically rings
off the hook preventing me from working on the problem. I will do my best
to update the number when there is an issue.

To contact the Internet Response Hotline call our regular number:

515-574-5500 x 93
800-669-2325 x 93

thanks.

the sonicwall 3060 with enhanced firmware does the job here.

One issue is that if you load balance, then you need to restart the

We're using the 8e6 R3000 for remote filtering. Works awesome, but probably
not cost-effective for just a few students. Still, if you're doing a 1:1

and get it going now?

Tony, The Sonicwall you have with Enhanced firmware will allow for two ISP
connections. So only upgrade if the unit is not working for you.

Got any ideas for a good router? I've been thinking about the SonicWall
4060 which allows redundant connections and load balancing.

I am considering it, either bump the one I have or get an additional
one. I understand the catch is getting e-rate to pay for that second
connection. That part I have not looked into yet.

Ok I was just told that I need to have laptops for two students to
take home, due to their IEP.. Ok fine. There needs to be a filter on
their internet traffic when they are not at school... Not so fine. I
need to have the laptop ready for Wednesday at the latest. Oh yeah, it
needs to be free. Ideas?
Laptops are MacBooks running 10.5

OpenDNS will filter, but since I don't know anything about the
networks they MAY join when they are not here, I am not sure I can set
that up. Checking K9

Will it load balance? I don't want to buy a second connection just to
