Dear Scott,

year. Schools may also recycle for their community. The details of this
years program are below.
Enjoy the day,
Marty Berda
Midwest Electronic Recovery

CRT recycling costs are reduced to:

Any size CRT monitor $3
TVs under 21 inches are $5
TVs 21 inches and over are $10
All other computer equipment is recycled for free, including printers.
Receive credit back against your recycling costs:

Complete PCs, missing only one component, are credited back 10 cents per pound.
Incomplete PCs, missing two or more components but not entirely stripped, are
credited back 5 cents per pound.
Transportation:

Trucking is free for 12 full pallets of equipment. Smaller amounts of
equipment are charged a minimum trucking fee.
If it is more convenient, you may bring your equipment to one of our two
facilities: 7420 University Ave. in Clive or 100 3rd Street North in Walford
Guarantee:

Your equipment will be recycled in the United States by qualified technicians.
Virtually all of the equipment is recycled with nothing going to a landfill.
We offer certificates of data destruction and equipment recycling.

I will be happy to help you plan an electronics recycling event. Contact me at

We went with a system from Electric Innovations out of Sioux City I
think. I agree with the "you get the best system you can afford as there
are times you wished you had better resolution." remark. Also consider
the night vision indoors as well as out. Our indoor cameras are horrible
in low-light situations.

Crap Cleaner (that's what ccleaner was first called) works awesome if
you are not able to re-image for whatever reason. I used that software a
bunch in a previous life fixing personal PCs that obviously couldn't
just be re-imaged. You can also schedule it to run automatically and
silently. I also believe there is a portable version that could run off
of a thumb drive if you allow such things.

Re: [info-tech] clean-ups

2009-04-15 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
And to stop the problem with the computers getting slower in the first place
use a program such as Deep Freeze, or Clean Slate to lock the machine into
"Original Image" state. Use your network for storage. This way every time the
computer is rebooted, or a new user logs on the machine reverts back to it's
original config.

If you currently leave your machines open so users can install any software
they want on the system, you may have some political grumblings, but if you do
leave them open can you comfortably say that all the software on your systems
is legitimately licensed? I know of a district that had a software audit
required, and they were fined over $50k for unlicensed software. Remember the
district is liable for all software installed on machines regardless of how it
got there.

The other thing is it can reduce desktop support by 80%, letting you get to
more important tasks.

If money is an issue Microsoft Steady State is a free program that will do the
same thing, but missing advanced features you can find in the commercial
products.

RE: [info-tech] clean-ups

2009-04-15 Thread Sheets, Jake
While certainly agree with re-imaging machines, there are a few things
you can do to significantly improve performance on a routine basis.

One of our staff has created a program that enumerates all profiles on a
machine, deletes files from the temp and temp internet directories in
each of those profiles, then deletes files from the \TEMP and
\Windows\Temp directories, and removes the windows update uninstall
directories. It then runs JKDefrag on the drive.

We have pushed this out to run on a scheduled task weekly.

It has really improved the performance of systems.

I can check with him to see if he would allow me to send it to anyone,
if any one wants it...

[info-tech] clean-ups

2009-04-15 Thread Mitch Mueller
What do you guys all do for computer clean up. I had a teacher come into today
asking if we could buy a registry cleaner for all the computers because they
are so slow. Want to know what you guys do for something like that part.

Please help me and thank god we get a break tomorrow.
