[info-tech] Student Email Policies

2010-01-04 Thread Phillip Trimble
Hello All,

I am wondering if any of the school districts out there are allowing
student's access to email, and if so are you willing to share your email
policy with me. Here in Pocahontas we are in the final stages of
implementing our 1 to 1's and just trying to tie up some loose ends.

Thanks

RE: [info-tech] Student Email Policies

2010-01-04 Thread McKenney, Kurt
We give out a school email address if it is needed for a class or other
legitimate purpose. Kids are allowed to access Gmail. Hotmail, Yahoo mail, and
pretty much any other online email interface.

The reason for limiting email accounts is simple. We don't want the liability
from a teenager's sense of humor.

Right now we are slooowly rolling out emaill accounts through
google docs. We have discussed how, if we need to archive the student
emails, but don't have a decision yet.

RE: [info-tech] Student Email Policies

2010-01-04 Thread Timothy A. Limbert
Hi, Phil.

We do offer student email accounts, hosted on SmarterMail at the AEA, for
grades 9-12. They are periodically monitored and their inbox size is
limited, and they agree to use them only for school purposes. Violations
result in the loss of the account.

Our teachers and office staff find it great to be able to communicate
directly with students that way, and it allows the students to access
teachers directly, also. I find it invaluable in helping 1:1 students when
they have problems outside of school.

There certainly are risks, obviously. We've had a pretty small number of
problems, mostly relating to romantically involved couples emailing each
other every five minutes all day long.
