[info-tech] Quick Survey - Student Accounts
I would sure appreciate any responses to the following questions regarding student passwords when you get a chance 1. What is your procedure when a student forgets their logon password? Who handles this request? 2. Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so, who do you share that list with? 3. How often do you change student passwords? I am just curious what other districts are doing regarding this problem. It's not a big deal at this point in the game, but it seems to be an issue during the first few weeks of school and of course that is when we are bombarded by a million other things.. Right now we use an in-house solution hMail Server. http://www.hmailserver.com/ - best part about it is that it is free. Not very robust, but does the job. [info-tech] AUP Violations
Just curious what other districts are doing for students who violate AUP's. Do you have a 1st Violation, 2nd Violation, 3rd Violation set of consequences as a minumum punsihment? Or is it punishment fits the crime and is unique in every case? This is especially tough for us 1:1 schools and I would like to hear how you are handling these incidences. For instance, we have high school kids who know they are being monitored, but still decide to type F*** this school in a Google search. I would like to kick the kid off the internet for a while for something like that. But in a school system that is so integrated with technology, it is tough to enforce the rules and make teachers have to provide alternate plans for student who cannot access technology. Thoughts... [info-tech] Follett Destiny Library Manager - TitlePeek Images
This question is for anyone out there that is using Follett Destiny Library Manager with TitlePeek. We are having a problem getting the thumbnail images to show up when we search for books within Destiny. Their tech support hasn't been very helpful to say the least. I have checked the Firewall to make sure it isn't blocking it and have checked our Lightspeed content filtering to make sure it isn't getting blocked there, but no luck. [info-tech] LightSpeed / Internet Violations
For those of you that kick kids off the Internet for violating your AUP, what do you do for school related access for projects, research, etc? We use LightSpeed for content filtering which will block their access, but we still want a way to let them on in a very monitored environment. Any suggestions? Right now, we have a few computers in our library with static IP addresses and then a policy applied to those IP addresses, and that works, but didn't know if there was a better way to do it. RE: [info-tech] steadystate
I have used it in one of our computer labs. It worked as advertised, but I didn't like the fact that there was no Management Console. Each machine had to be unfrozen manually to apply updates, patches, etc. Maybe they have improved it since this was a couple of years ago. If it had a Management Console to unfreeze all computers in one shot, then it would definitely be worth the money!! I guess it depends on how often you want to patch and update your computers. It is a great way to make them oblivious to any changes made during a day. One reboot and all is well again. RE: [info-tech]help before i got completely insane
I agree also with the problem with third party wireless management. It seems as though it waits until a user is logged on using cached credentials to enable the wireless connection. With Windows managing the connection, it seems like the connection is active immediately when the laptop is fired up. I don't know why you would want it the other way?? It would not allow a new domain user to log on with a wireless connection. Anyway hope that helps... RE: [info-tech] Updating Computers
We also use WSUS and Group Policy. Once it is set up, approving or declining updates isn't a big deal. Not compared to the time you would spend if you physically had to go and touch every machine. I think that just trusting that your end users to apply the updates wouldn't give you the oversight as to whether or not patches were being applied as desired. With WSUS you have the option to verify which machines are compliant and which are lacking updates. Then, if you have to physically go to one or two machines that are having issues, at least the other 99% are fully patched to your specifications. Also, if you have certain computers that run mission critical apps, you would be able to create a special schedule to apply updates to these machines. Then, your everyday use PC's are patched and running without any risk of security exploits and all of the other stuff that Microsoft says could happen if you don't update. JMO... RE: [info-tech] Lightspeed
We use Lightspeed for Content Filtering, Anti-virus, and Spam Filtering. We had some user identification issues early in the implementation, but everything has been great since. The problem was a mismatch of Security Agent Versions. Once everything was running 7.0 and up, we were good. Terminal Service users need LS Guide to resolve usernames. It is on the LightSpeed Wiki. We haven't had any virus issues...but we are locked down pretty tight. We even force Google as the search engine choice, all others are blocked, which forces safe search. I even have one Mac and he has the Mac User Agent installed which allows reporting to be done on his traffic. I haven't upgraded to 7.02 yet, but plan to do so shortly.
