[info-tech] Student Email Accounts

2010-09-16 Thread Sarah Freking
I'm interested in what other districts are doing about student email. We've
never had a solution
here, and it's turning into a real problem for us as we try to do more and more
with wikis and
blogging and so forth. Do you have email addresses for your students? What
grades? Do you get
parental permission? And so on. Just what is your policy and what solution do
you use? Thanks!

We are using SmarterMail hosted through the AEA for grades 5-12 at the
moment. Have you looked into Google Apps for Education, and getting all
students set up with Gmail?

We just gave grades 6-12 email accounts last week. We did not get parental
permission though. We are using the AEA's Smarter Mail solution for staff and
students now so they are both in one local spot.

2010-09-16 Thread Jackie Fonley
we allow students to use their email accounts for any of the google apps they
are using, wikis/blogging, etc. -- it's a per classroom basis. I think most
have their own google account . . . for students who do not have email, I have
given them a school email account (I think I have only needed to do this twice
@ the hs)

No real uniform set up . . . younger levels teachers work with parents (my
5th grade daughter, for example, - I helped her at home set up to join her
classroom wiki . . . )

Right now we use an in-house solution hMail Server.
http://www.hmailserver.com/ - best part about it is that it is free. Not
very robust, but does the job. We use it mostly for the purpose that you
are needing.

We are just starting this year with 6-12 and are doing it in-house with
Ability Mail. Very simple, very cheap and very configurable.

We had both the students and their parents sign a user agreement.
