All the infra members please review the style guide and answer this email with your vote (+1 I like it, 0 I don't mind, -1 It has to change), if -1, add also a description of the problems you see so we can work on them. Hi David First of all thanks for your efforts in writing that, I am certainly for standards. However, I feel that we have to decide what kind of scripts we want to write. Alon (Bar Lev), for example , is for removing what he is calling 'bashisem' from the infra code, lately we had turned all dbscripts/dbutils code from bash to POSIX. So, I think that we should decide first on the direction ('to bash or not to bash, this is the question') Otherwise, we are left with a bunch of scripts, each written differently, and even if each has its code style guidelines, I believe that it makes our development environment harder to maintain and more buggy ... Hello Eli, Scripts that are going to be shipped with the product should be written in POSIX shell and this is correct. But here we are talking about scripts that we (infra team) are going to use to maintain our infrastructure - so there should be no problem to use bash here, since those scripts wont be shipped with the product. - Kiril All the non-infra people, you are welcome to vote also and give input, but your single vote will not be decisive. I'll close the voting next monday if no changes to the Style guide are proposed. Thanks! dcaro +1 -- David Caro Red Hat S.L. Currently the (Node related) layout is: releases + base + node-base + 3.0.0 + iso + rpm + alpha + beta + nightly (symlink?) + stable (symlink to 3.0.0?) could we please change the tree to be more like: releases + node-base + 3.0 + iso + rpm + stable (symlink to 3.0) Some notes on the removed paths: base - Was unused alpha - To reduce overhead I'd use jenkins builds for alpha beta - To reduce overhead I'd use jenkins builds for beta beta - To reduce overhead I'd use jenkins builds for nightlies Some more notes: 3.0 - Just this one dir for all updates This boils down to Node just offering stable images on resources.o.o. Everything else can be pulled from jenkins (once we get everything into shape again). This suggestion is just for the base image. Once the base images are in place, jenkins can pick up the base images and generate layered images which include vdsm (to be used with Engine). The layered images can then be kept in the same place where the remaining oVirt (Engine, vdsm, ...) packages are kept (for 3.3.3 in /releases/3.3.3/…). At this stage nobody really needs master nightly, while 3.4.0 branches nightly will be more useful. Why is that? Kiril is working on splitting repo per version, so you have multiple nightly. nightly requires 6GB of disk space and we have just 3GB left there. We're short on resources for having multiple nightlies right now. I correct myself, right now nightly takes ~3GB of space. I can try to make some space, but if the repo size increases a little we'll run out f space there. if nobody will test master then we will be in big problem when trying to stabilize it. agree - we need master tested and we should have nightlies on it as well We'll need more storage then... Agree. Just to understand how much we need and if we can gather it, how many nightly has to be taken for allowing rollback? just latest and previous? Ignore rollback and just keep latest? Currently we planned to have nightly for each version: ovirt-version-snapshot - for nightly builds ovirt-snapshot - master nightly ovirt-version - released version So we need some more space to handle that. To avoid RPM dups on the filesystem, we can create a root directory to save RPMs there and use hardlinks. For example: Packages-version - | - rpm1, rpm2 ... and link rpms from ovirt-version-snapshot and ovirt-version to Packages-version. In that way you will avoid dup rpms. - Original Message - From: Eyal Edri ee...@redhat.com To: infra infra@ovirt.org Sent: Thursday, December 19, 2013 8:43:16 AM Subject: Moving to new infra vendor for the oVirt project Hi, Due to some technical difficulties and current experience we have decide to switch hosting provider for the oVirt project, to host mostly the Jenkins infra (jenkins slave mostly), but potentially alterway servers as well (for production servers). I would like to hear your thoughts about which servers and HW requirements we need for the infra. The proposed infra layout: === 1. ovirt-engine 3.3.x stable manager to run on a VM[1] 2. 3 bare-metal servers to serve as hypervisors for jenkins slaves and nested vms for automation tests. The proposed infra layout: === 1. ovirt-engine 3.3.x stable manager to run on a VM[1] 2. 3 bare-metal servers to serve as hypervisors for jenkins slaves and nested vms for automation tests. [2] we'll expect to run at least 4 VMs on each hypervisor for various jenkins slaves, and have the ability to take one host for maintanance w/o affecting the infra downtime too much. 3. external storage for a storage domain (NFS or ISCSI) and backups for all oVirt services. I'd prefer to start with 96GB RAM. You can never have enough RAM ;) I think that 4 slaves per hypervisor isn't all that much given we also want to start supporting multiple operating systems. Let's say we have Fedora, EL and Ubuntu. For each we support 1 or 2 releases (F19, F20, EL5, EL6, Ubuntu latest LTS) that's already 5 distros. With 2 slaves per distro, that's 10 slaves. Then we also sometimes want to start supporting a beta (F21, EL7, Ubuntu next LTS). More RAM can also lower the requirement on storage because of caching. Network wise I may be spoiled, but at $work it's all 1G and more and more 10G so I'd prefer 1G. That said, I don't know the extra cost. It will also depend on if we want to put resources.ovirt.org there. Maybe we can get more community support by setting up a mirrorlist and lower the requirement. That said, +1 to moving. I'm suprised it was this hard to get things going at Rackspace. +1 for 96GB - Kiril ___ Infra mailing list Infra@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/infra ___ Infra mailing list Infra@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/infra

Migration for the rackspace servers
Hello, Please review the plan I've wrote for the migration. MUST REQUIREMENTS * Gluster data domain * Export domain * Open a ticket to rackspace regarding static MAC address mapping STEPS 1. Install rackspace03.ovirt.org 2. Create gluster based DC and add gluser storage as data domain. 3. Add rackspace03.ovirt.org into the DC. 4. Create export domain. 5. Attach export domain into rackspace[01/02].ovirt.org. 6. Poweoff all VMs on rackspace[01/02].ovirt.org and export them. 7. Attach export domain to the gluster based dc 8. Import all vms 9. Poweroff vms and check their statuses/connectivity. In jenkins as well. 10. Add rackspace[01/02].ovirt.org to the gluster based dc 11. Do steps 5-10 for rackspace02 Will remove the local DCs a week after migration after we will be sure that everything is ok. - Kiril ___ Infra mailing list Infra@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/infra

In a case that nested VMs wont work because of the kernel bug, can you use fake hosts instead ? - Kiril - Original Message - From: Fabian Deutsch fabi...@redhat.com To: Eyal Edri ee...@redhat.com Cc: infra@ovirt.org Sent: Thursday, September 12, 2013 1:47:22 PM Subject: Re: State of new hardware and nesting Hey Eyal, Am Donnerstag, den 12.09.2013, 06:22 -0400 schrieb Eyal Edri: Hardware is now setup, but might still be missing additional resources to spawn new vms. First - Nice that the new hardware is up! So your code will create the vms it needs via restapi/sdk? Currently our code can use libvirt to spawn additional VMs (and remove them afterwards) for testing. We could also look if we add an Engine backend to our code so we can directly speak to engine and spawn the VMs there. (But see below). As for the VMs: They are short-lived (~5min) and should be equipped with ~2CPUs and ~2GB RAM. We can also limit the number of concurrent VMs, e.g. we could limit it to one VM at a time, so we don't exhaust all available resources. nested vms might be ready soon, after a major bug was fixed on kernel, we currently test its functionality again and we'll update once(if) it's verified and working. That would be awesome! Is there a bug which tracking this I could subscribe too? (i) If nesting was possible I'd suggest that we run our own libvirt instance inside our VM and use that libvirt instance to spawn the additional VMs. (ii) If that's not possible I would look into adding a additional backend to Igor which then can speak directly to Engine to spawn the additional VMs. But note that this will imply that Igor will create a new for and is uploading an ISO to Engine for each test run. That's basically not a bad thing (tm) but a lot of interaction with Engine. (i) is IMHO safer and more practical as it is self-contained. Surely the nested VMs won't be to powerful, but that's okay. But (ii) is also a way to go if nesting is not possible. fabian - Original Message - From: Fabian Deutsch fabi...@redhat.com To: infra@ovirt.org Sent: Thursday, September 12, 2013 12:05:07 PM Subject: State of new hardware and nesting Hey, to run functional tests with ovirt-node we still need a possibility to spawn VMs. The solution which got discussed a couple of weeks (months?) back was to enable nesting to allow a setup like: Host +- Test Automation (Igor) VM +- Test Instance (spawned on demand by Igor) +- Test Instance (spawned on demand by Igor) Back then the new hardware wasn't setup and not ready. Re: Jenkins job for ovirt-iso-uploader and ovirt-image-uploader
Hello, Is suggest to go with the following: 1. The job will run on a specific slave(will create one for this or change the current one) 2. For NFS we can configure NFS share for localhost only on that specific slave. For ISO,IMAGE uploader that should do the trick. For SSH - will configure localhost access as well. 3. Job should install/cleanup all pkgs after it finishes. It doesn't meter if it succeed or failed. For this, need to add cleanup code into the job itself and in the POST TASK in jenkins. Also it should clean images it uploaded at the end of the job. At the end of the job slave should be clean. 4. There is no need to create two jobs for testing these tools. Will have one job that will test ISO/IMAGE tools. - Kiril - Original Message - From: Mike Burns mbu...@redhat.com To: Eyal Edri ee...@redhat.com Cc: infra infra@ovirt.org Sent: Wednesday, September 11, 2013 3:16:21 PM Subject: Re: Jenkins job for ovirt-iso-uploader and ovirt-image-uploader On 09/11/2013 03:56 AM, Eyal Edri wrote: Hi Sandro, I assume we can create a new vm on rackspace to act as NFS server for the job, or even convert one of the existing jenkins slave vms to be one. any other thoughts from the infra team? One approach: jenkins job creates some sort of lockfile, removes it on finish cron job checks for lockfile if found, see how long it's been there, clean up if it's been too long if not, clean up nfs share Mike Also, you will need to get a power user for jenkins (for tools) in order to create new jobs for them as well. New ideas to grow the community
Hi team, I have few ideas regarding the project, any feedback will be appreciated ! ### IRC ### 1. I think that we should create new channels on irc, #ovirt is not enough. We should add: #ovirt-meeting - will be used for meetings only, need to add bot that will log the meetings #ovirt-devel - will be used for devel discussions only #ovirt - general 2. Infra meetings should start with the following topic - New folks introductions (this is a tmp subject) In this topic we will let new folks to introduce themselves. ### Ovirt website ### 1. I think that we need to prepare for the future and do things correctly. I think that this will help the project to grow. We should add: #ovirt-meeting - will be used for meetings only, need to add bot that will log the meetings meeting can generate a lot of temporary noise which can deter people from jumping in, so I would agree to create an ad-hoc channel for a meeting - but please update the main #ovirt topic to indicate where the meeting takes place. Nobody told users that they must/should attend meetings. If they want - they will attend. Why not ovirt-meeting ? I like this name. I don't mind the name - I just want the topic of #ovirt to remind me where have everybody's gone to. Good idea Sure we need to update the wiki with a new place #ovirt-devel - will be used for devel discussions only Have users complained that there are to many technical discussions on #ovirt? I think that it's important to keep the devels near users until devels become a nuisance. Each discussions should be done in the right place. Maybe devel channel is not relevant for now, but still it will be nice to have it for a future. I think that spinning off #ovirt-devel is not a thing done correctly. We may have to do it in the future, if users are tired of technical java discussions. Until this happens, we need to keep the guys who knows the most about the code near the guys who needs their support, in one happy channel. Yes I agree with you. #ovirt - general 2.
