[IRCA] 940 in Mexicali

2006-11-08 Thread Marty Rimpau
Hi all, I had dismissed this station, thinking it was probably bend
Oregon, or something like that, but apparently, the 940 in Fresno is
off tonight, and I found out that x e m m m at 940 in Mexicali is
oldies, but there doesn't seem to be any internet stream, though before
the song on a carousel by the hollies, I heard a phone number,
552-4500, and one of their jingles takes from the song, baby I'm yours,
by Barbara Lewis, and where the pause is, the girls sing nueve
cuarenta. Now, there's another Spanish station on 940, that I've heard
as fiesta mexicana, which I figured was Mexicali, but apparently, it
isn't, so I wonder if there's a way to get 940 in Mexicali to start
streaming, or, is there a way to have a person make an mp3 of it, and
use something like you send it to get it to me, because it sounded
pretty interesting, though there were some awful remakes of stuff, like
the remake of sealed with a kiss by Brian Hyland, and heart aches by
the number, by Guy Mitchell, but when I was down in the imperial valley
in 2003, 940 was fiesta mejicana, and still, on google, it is listed
that way, which isn't true anymore. Thanks in advance.

I had to go out for a couple hours. On recheck at 05:30 nothing except the odd

[IRCA] DX 11/7 & 8

2006-11-08 Thread Arthur W Peterson
Surprise logging on car radio 11/7 1700 PST. Usually if KPIG-1510 fades
during sunset skip, KGA comes barreling in. This time, no more than a
whisper from KGA, and KFNN-1510 ruled the roost instead. New logging.

On 11/8, 1400 UT, thought I had China on 945, but instead surprise NHK
pips on the hour. 4 syncros listed, combined power = 10kw.

At 1300 UT I was on 927 again, but could get no conclusive evidence as to
who was putting in the substantial carrier. It was a work day, but I
could not pass up the low A-index.

Have you considered mailing the obligatory thank-you letter
to the GM, advising that you have noticed the recent
improvement in audio quality in the past 2 days, and
hoping it is permanent? After all, you do qualify as a local
listener, and have "standing" to comment.

One of the big secrets about IBOC, as I see it, is that they
believe no one notices the degradation in analog AM. If
they thought people did notice, perhaps it would tip the
balance in some marginal cases to stations holding
off on deployment, or even undeploying it.

Just a thought

TAs had a hot start here around local sunset (2130-2200 UT), with big signals
from Albania-1395, France-1467, Saudi-1521 and various others, but then they
died out and didn't come back. Conditions changing?

Still good to the west here tonight, with CKWX, CKST, CFFR, KOMO heard, among

Re: [IRCA] KKOL

2006-11-08 Thread bportzer
I'm also in northeast Seattle, where KKOL is noticeably weaker than the Vashon
Island stations. KKOL is about 15db/S9, compared to 25-40db/S9 for the
Vashoners(570 710 770 820 950 1000 1090) and 5-10 db/S9 for KKMO-1360. 1310 &
1290 are only about 5-10 db weaker than KKOL, with very little splatter from
KKOL.

While driving home from work tonight, I had another station (probably KAPL) in
the background, sometimes almost equal to KKOL. This was around 5 pm along
Highway 520 and to my home nearthe U of W.

Is KKOL transmitting from Tacoma or the boat tonight?

The more TeamBLOC talks, the more they sound like grifters. Dissemblings more
preposterous than ever. Latest re 'twenty year return' is absurd.

Analong's elegant simplicity is what makes it durable in face of constant
innovation. Compelling programming would heliarc it into permanence.

But high-viscosity BigKorpseorate dullards believe talent is unnecessary.

By the by, latest R/W issue suggests 'Fatso' underwent Hi-Fibre & Grecian
Formula Makeover upon leaving NAB for private piratical pursuits. Impressive.

Life's truth's are simple - bad form to flaunt what you have. I don't have
hair. I keep it short to avoid any suggestion, however slight, of flaunting my
hairjob.

Rest assured, had I a bouffant of the sort obnoxiously flicked about by Bubba
Bullshale, I would not color, dye, or otherwise augment it. The 'Yul Brynner
Final Solution" remains the only course of action open to me. So what's with
'Fatso'? Does Grecian Formula (r) and a stint at Dr. Kellog's Clinique
d'Colonique somehow convey success inevitable?

As for iBLOC, VladMart selling boxloads of nifty $5 AM/FM 'Sport Radios'
which seem somewhat waterproof.

Five bucks and they probably pull decent DX in their own right and run
forever on batteries.

iBLOC?  To paraphrase Sunny vonBulow's loyal servant, Maria Schrallhammer;

"For what iBLOC?"

Here's what local salesvolk say about iBLOC:

Wha'? "Yeah. Sirius, got it.""HD? Costly." "Doesn't work well."
"Something wrong."
"Customers returned couple of units we sold." - not exactly a recommendation.

When will these digital prevaricators quit their cynical charade?

Similar results this morning down here in southern Alberta. Around 80
carriers noted, including some decent ones on generally unproductive
frequencies. Audio noted on 531, 594, 693, 702, 747, 774, 1179, 1242,
1422, 1566.Also likely that I was hearing KYUK on 640 as I heard a
clear NPR ID at 1430, and I don't know of any other NPR stations on
640. LW was unproductive, with only weak audio on 279 noted.
As far as tonight goes, in spite of continued good numbers, only a
few feeble TA carriers noted, considerably weaker than last night.

Better sunset skip cx to west than could normally be expected this early in
Nov. Another tentative for KKIM 1000 with rlg mx thru phased WMVP but they
switched at 17:59 CST prior to any ID. All kinds of typical western sunset
skip stuff hrd due to phasing.

On the TA front, things like Ireland 567, Spain 684, Azores 693, Croatia
1134 are audible on my western antennas which are setup to have decent nulls
to the E and certainly don't favor NE and ENE stuff. If my TA BOGs weren't

One can only hope as it is no fun to have nearly 900 mile away KOA's IBOC

Need I mention WTMJ's IBOC coming on in the morning and wrecking any
attempts to get a bit of audio out of what should be the strong Aussie on

easterly sunset skip logs since too many of my locals and semilocals have
IBOC on days.

Dear Jim and fellow IRCA listeners -

What fine news to discover upon return from daily forced march. May the
demise of this noisy insolent digital scabies be permanent and become many, as
blood flecks in wino vomit.

BigKorpseorate poopsheets' latest spin: iBLOC 'investors looking at twenty
year return'.

Wow! Twenty years. In a world in which every field, be it radio, medicine,
plumbing, changes practically by the hour. One can barely keep pace with
superseding developments..

But in twenty years gout-riddled wastrels say 'traffic texting' will be bigga
stuff?

How do they straight-facedly spew this tripe? Do they really believe what
they blat?

What's with them? Korsakoff's Psychosis? Wet Brain? Paresis? Horrid.

In any event, good to hear at least one RF toxic waste emitter is gone.

I figure 750 and 580 are my best shots from here. I'll have QRM on 1310
and 960 and likely 1290 as well.

Interestingly, I logged KGHL from North Jersey in 1971, also logged
KKGF-1310 and KLYQ-980 the same season. Logged a couple of MT DX tests
from Syracuse in 1966 or so. No MT from here yet.

This is one I plan to set an alarm for and force myself to get up !

KLER was in last night as was KCMY. While I was listening, KCMY was doing talk
(election coverage?), which helped KLER stand out. KENI was in well after 0500
PT this morning...so well that I thought I might have a chance at KFQD but it
didn't happen. I fell asleep listening to very nice signal from KICY/850.
KPUA? Poo! Hawaii doesn't exist. Its a figment of Patrick Martin's
imagination. I don't know why I can't get Hawaii anymore.

[IRCA] Vry Nice, Bottom to Top: TPs, Nov 8

2006-11-08 Thread John H. Bryant
Gee, it was like mid-October. Virtually all of the usual suspects
were there, and the upper band was more active hat I've seen it inna
couple of weeks. 43 in audio, overall. Most of the usual JJs, KKs
and even CCs. 567, NHK1, Sapporo is usually only threshold audio on
good mornings. It was the strongest of the season. 612 remained at
just below language recognition and I really couldn't tell, but it
seemed EE/DU. There was also that same level on 1098, presumed
Taiwan most likely the best of the season for that one. 1134
showed well, as did 1206, both of which are usually blotted out here
by adjacent Vancouver stations. 1251 showed the first decent audio in
many days, though it was only threshold. and 1377, CNR1 and 1503
Japan were doing excellently an unusual event this late in the
season. Finally, 1593 was in some form of Chinese, not parallel to
CNR, so it was almost certainly unneeded Heilongjiang first time
in decent audio in a long while.

Very nice way to start the day!

[IRCA] Radio Cadena Habana 530 kHz

2006-11-08 Thread Stephen Ponder
530 kHz CUBA Radio Cadena Habana

RCH had a HUGE signal into Houston, TX, last night. I listened
to them from around 10:50 PM until 11:05 PM CST using both my
Kaito KA-1103 and a Radio Shack 12-888 AM/FM/WX portable digital
radio. At 11:00 PM, they played the Cuban National Anthem and
went into "Noticias." Interesting, when I tuned back at 11:15 PM,
they were completely gone!

Their website is http://www.cadenahabana.cu/

BTW ... I have been pretty impressed with the performance of the
Radio Shack 12-888 radio. It has built-in stereo speakers so that
you get "stereo" sound with FM stations. Here's a link to the
User's Guide (it has a picture of the radio in it):

You wouldn't hear an FM mention on WCJW. I'm friends with the owner (in
fact, the station's in Tower Site Calendar 2007, as Miss December), and
it does not now have and has never had any FM sister station.

They're very hopeful that the FCC might approve FM translators for AM
stations. Their transmitter site sits on a hill overlooking Warsaw, and
100 watts from up there would blanket the town quite nicely...

Re: [IRCA] KKOL

2006-11-08 Thread Dan Strassberg
If KKOL is not coming in well in northeast Seattle, but you know that they
are operating from the Tacoma site, you've got good evidence that they are
on night pattern. It's not ironclad evidence, but if the day pattern were
running, I would expect you to report a good signal (though perhaps not a
great one). The night pattern is narrower than the day pattern and is
centered on the northwest. The day pattern is broader and is centered on the
northeast. Fading is a possibility in your location because the short towers
produce lots of high-angle radiation, but regular rapid fades (you said that
you wondered whether there was a SAH between the ship-based Tx and the
land-based facility) seem unlikely to me.

[IRCA] TPs Hour of fun

2006-11-08 Thread vroomski
Good Morning,

Did not get to the dials until 1426 UTC. Conditions were not that good, even
strong Japanese power-houses were weak. 594 & 693 were not heard at all.
Right before 1500 UTC the upper band came alive. The small Japanese stations
came in 1386-1404-1413 & 1503, weak but with JJ and a mostly playing music.
China 1305 CNR2 was in with weak audio, but signal was stronger than the SW //
4460. It's now 1524 UTC with HLAZ 1566 fading out.

Stations with audio

558-657-666-774-1035-828-1035-1107-1206-1305-1386-1404-1413-1422-1503-1566-1575-1593.
1107 was heard at 1450 UTC with a weak signal, but a few ring tone type
sounds came through well. A fun pack hour or so.

A very good morning (the best in several weeks for me) despite me monitoring
fairly late between 14:41 and 15:30. A definite dawn enhancement especially in
the upper band. I started at the top and worked down. Most of the audios were
up there including weak audios on frequencies rarely heard. A total of 31
audios, and the rest audible hets. Audio heard on: 558 594 612 738 747 774

Not a bad morning at all! ..Walt

[IRCA] TP for 11-8

2006-11-08 Thread Bill Block

It was a very good day for TP stations with audio on 594, 648, 693, 747,
756, 774, 828, 864, 963, 972, 1026, 1044, 1053, 1188, 1422, 1566. My far
the best was 1566 with 648 a close second. When I first turned on the radio
at 1305 the only station to be heard was 1566 with a fair signal. The band
came alive at 1335 with some of the best signals of the year.

Re: [IRCA] 1140 unid

2006-11-08 Thread Russ Edmunds

Update on this.

I listened at sunrise each of the past 3 mornings across 0645.

Each time I heard a band SSB @ 0645, followed by a male voice with ID
and announcements ( but no FM mention ) for unneeded WCJW then
immediately into country music.

What I'd heard last week was a female voice, with a longer period of
talk, possibly including Spanish, including an FM frequency, then into
what might have been religious music.

So the SSB from last week might have been WCJW or the other station.

Adding to the mix, this morning around 0635-40, I had a "teaching &
preaching" type of format poking through WRVA. Forgetting about PSRA's
for a moment, that would only seem to fit WRNA-NC. But if I open up to
PSA's, and broaden the format definition a bit there are other
possibilities including WRLV-KY and WBXR-AL.

I may be tuning 1140 for yet another week !

Tonight they're coming in pretty well. KLER also coming in with C&W. As an

was doing talk with a lot of pauses, which enabled me to get KCBQ...virtually

I'm in northeast Seattle, and found at 9 p.m. tonight that KKOL was weaker
