Re: [IRCA] Tone test on 1610 now?

2006-11-28 Thread Bob Young

I have just found a carrier on 1611 which is creating a het on 1610, which
disappears if I phase the 1611 carrier. Not sure yet if the carrier on 1611 is
broadcasting a test tone or is also just a het from it's interaction with 1610
that is what I suspect though, I'm surprised no one else found this 1611
carrier. I also found two disctinct carriers on my SP-600 although I couldn't
have told you whether it was 1611 or 1612 and also was able to get rid of the
het with the crystal phasing control. I'm too tired (just worked a double
shift) to investigate further.

Re: [IRCA] Tone test on 1610 now?

2006-11-28 Thread W. Curt Deegan
To add a little more detail to my original post...

I've been monitoring the signal with test tone since first reported
by David Crawford on the DX Florida list about 2300Z, 11/28.

At 0500Z, 11/29, and for the last hour or so I've seen a steady S9+10
and over, on the R30cc with Quantum Loop, with occasional slow fades
down to S9.

At 0042Z the signal stopped for a couple seconds and again a few
seconds later, both times returning with the same tone. Otherwise
I've not noticed it vary aside from slight fading. That fading
brings up the level of the higher 1 kHz components and the 30 Hz
sidetones associated with them.

Spectran reports the primary tone peak at 1001.1 Hz, secondary at
1999.7 Hz. Occasionally they flip status briefly, but most of the
time 1 kHz is strongest. You can see an example here, where 2 kHz is
strongest:
http://scooterhound.com/WWWR/radio/1610Mystery0002.jpg
This does show what I tried to describe regarding sidetones.

Continues on at 0045Z 11/29.

Surprised if this is Canada. Easily being heard
in Tampa at 2305 est ranging from s-3 to s-8. I could
definitely BFO both USB and LSB, so it's not a het.

Only a vague guess at a DF but I'd say either 020 or
200, maybe 030 - 210, according to dx390.
(If the foundation has moved, then these may be less
valid :-)

Only using toy RS portables (390, 399) so am
surprised how well this coming in, on peaks anyway,
on these typically semi-deaf portables..

I'm making it 265/85 degrees from Victoria BC...presumably the latter
judging by what others are hearing. Probably no better than +/-5
degrees accuracy, as this is a fady signal here, only about 25dB

I'm not seeing any 30 etc. Hz subbands here, but they may be too weak.

Finally had a chance to check it myself at 0405 UT Nov 29. It`s about 85 (or
265) degrees from this angle, the strongest signal on 1610, less than 1 kHz
tone. Glenn Hauser, Enid OK

DF is approx 104 degrees from Barrington (35 mi NW of Chi) IL.

I know it is east of me for sure due to nulling it on phased BOG system. I took

I can hear Toronto's SS in its null on the portable. 73 KAZ

Re: [IRCA] KNBR/KTCT downtime???

2006-11-28 Thread Patrick Martin
Thanks Mike for the update. I will be keeping my fingers crossed. That
is the ones that did not freeze off today. hi.
Because of the possible KNBR SP, I went out in 36 degree weather to
check out my Eastern beverage this afternoon and walked along through
the couple inches of snow along the way. At least the high grass was not
all that wet. I have been trying to get out and check the Eastern
beverage since the storms a couple weeks back. I knew that one with
sustained winds of 80 MPH+ and gusts over 100 MPH+ did some damage. The
wire was not broken. The wire #12 and #13 is pretty tough, but I did
find about a dozen supports broken loose so I repair those and untangled
the wire from the blackberry brambles and straighten the wire back out.
It is working better tonight I noticed, much better, especially the
directivity of the 1500' Eastern beverage. After I came in at 1430 PST,
I found KATQ 1070 alone on the antenna, KKGR-680 good on top of KOMW, so
it is working well. The A is 7 and K is 1, so I hope KNBR in off for a
bit. I can think of all sorts of goodies on 680 to try for. Lets see,
WPTF, KBRW, etc, etc.

Re: [IRCA] [dxld] Tones on 1610, 590, 1670 mystery music

2006-11-28 Thread Glenn Hauser
UNID tone on 590: Also heard strong tone here on/around 590 last night, but
nothing there tonight (11/29 UT and onward). However, same thing now heard
0100 and still on 0250 on/around 1610, very strong here. Same thing? BTW, it's
now 0335, and tone is still blasting in on/around 1610. Related to following?

UNID 1670: 11/28 around 1200 and also 1930 past 2025 but gone by 2045 re-check,
heard music loop, didn't time it but seemed repeated every 10 or 15 minutes.
All types of music, from classical to lite rock to big band to gospel!
Absolutley no announcements of any kind. Strong signal here. As strong as only
2 other X-banders heard here during day, 1650 WHKT/R. Disney in Portsmouth, VA
and 1690 WPTX in Lexington Park, MD. So if not located here in WV, would
definitely think in one of nearby states of Virginia, Maryland, or maybe
Pennsylvania. Anyone have any ideas? (Alex Vranes, Harpers Ferry WV, DX

Re: [IRCA] DX Tip KGEM now oldies

2006-11-28 Thread Tim Hall
Based on the stations I hear while traveling, I'd say the distinction
between what we used to call NOS and OLD formats is really breaking
down, probably for obvious demographic reasons. That's not good news
for me as a big band trombonist, but I'll take either one of these
formats over the boneheaded talk programs (be they left or right)
airing on 99% of the stations these days.

Shows on Spectran as 1, 2, and 3 kHz main frequencies in decreasing

Is that what it looks like to others? Another way of saying, are we

[IRCA] KNBR/KTCT downtime???

2006-11-28 Thread Michael Hawkins
I have a question mark on the subject line for obvious reasons. As of 1730 PT,
here's what I know. I have tried three times to contact someone in Engineering
(only one message left lest not to pester them) to find out if they will be
down tonight. I have not received a callback, which I prayed for though did
not expect. I have found out that engineering is short-staffed today with two
people out. They were not referred to as being "out sick." I am hoping that
those people are out because they will be back at work 6 hour or so from now
manning a scheduled downtime.

I have nothing conclusive, only some guarded optimism, but I wanted to pass
on what I do know. IF they are down, I was told a week or so back that KTCT
will go down around 2200-2300 PT or so tonight for 60-90 minutes, then KNBR for
the same amount of time. Let's hope.

[IRCA] KHWG 750 (NV) on day power late

2006-11-28 Thread Neil Kazaross
Cx tonite from here near Chicago are very good to the west but poor to more
northerly western areas like Canada so no CKJH QRM w/WSB phased. At 1845 CST
when they are supposed to switch KHWG had a slogan "Where have all the good
ones gone ?.. with 10,000 watts of daytime power..K-Hog" This is when they
are supposed to lower power and switch, but they didn't ! Still in at 1908
at
decent levels on fade ups with very old C&W mx and a full legal ID taped. Go
for them ASAP before they wake up and switch and before CKJH comes in well.

Re: [IRCA] Why I love this hobby

2006-11-28 Thread cafe

> Many of us whine and moan about the sorry state of the hobby, but guys like
> Richard make it all worthwhile. What a great hobby this is.

I, too, love the hobby...
-The pluses:

-The camraderie of getting to know some mighty fine
gentlemen (sorry, there are WAY too few YL's in the hobby - comes with
the territory.)
-The feeling of family you get while growing up with many of
these good people. (I got into SWL/MWDXing when I was 12 [am now 45+]
and really appreciated being taken under the wing by some older
and more experienced DXers... some of whom are here on the list!)
-Bringing new bodies into the hobby (my number one priority now...)
It is challenging in an age where "International Radio listening"
has been reduced to a click of a mouse and it takes extra time
to "explain" the fact that you can pick signals up "from the source".
-The friendly competition and cooperation during peak DX season.
-The colleagial sharing of resources between all the guys.

I could go on and on, but I won't.

Note - there is no downside to this hobby. I feel
that it is very much alive and has lots of life
left in it. It does, however, need to be encouraged
in younger people - not just to accept the "technology of
the day" but to explore other media other than the hi-tech media.

As disingenuous dingbat counterpoint, HD investor/cheerleader writes

[IRCA] Why I love this hobby

2006-11-28 Thread Jim Pogue
Just got a phone call from Richard Atwood, WDØBGO, CE at WYLD/Clear Channel
in New Orleans. I had mailed the station a reception report in early
October. He said he was sorry for taking so long to reply, but that he was
still putting the 7 stations he is responsible for back together after
Hurricane Katrina. He promised a QSL letter with goodies as soon as he could
find the time, but wanted to call and let me know he hadn’t forgotten about
me.

Many of us whine and moan about the sorry state of the hobby, but guys like
Richard make it all worthwhile. What a great hobby this is.

2006-11-28 Thread willis

Thanks to all who tried to help.

At 0200 EST I did get a full ID on this station.

680 CFTR ON TORONTO 0200 28/11/06
"Your all news and weather station, CFTR, 680 news, Toronto."

This is the first time ever, that I have heard Canada on 680 Kc. It's tough
to get away from WPTF. The 12 degrees that I heard was said to be the
temperture in Calgary. They posssibly meet a negitive 12 degrees.??

I keep hopeing that Alaska will pop up one of these days. I monitor each
frequency that may be possible to hear Alaska in 'this part of the woods.'
But the nortwestern states seem to be just a dream for me.

According to weather.com, there are a couple of US places with stations
on 680 that were colder than that last night - Omak WA dropped down to
-12 degrees and Helena MT was -18. I very much doubt that you heard
either station (they're both daytimers and the temps were too low).
Like several others said, it's probably CFTR.

Weather.com is a good place to check for current weather conditions &
forecasts in cases like this. You can get info by entering the name of
most any town (including places way too small to have radio stations, as
well as Canadian and international cities). It also includes hourly
temps for yesterday.

You can also go to their maps page and select "US weather" today from
the scroll down menu - you'll then get a map showing temperature etc
forecasts for the entire US. I haven't found one for Canada yet.

Kind of handy if you hear a mystery weather report

[IRCA] TP 28 Nov

2006-11-28 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Things seem more oriented towards down under this morning after
1500UT...612 audio traces and 1503 carrier seemed to come from there,
and all carriers seemed better on the west Flag compared with the
north one. Not much real audio on any channel, just traces. 774
and 747 seemed to be Japan, and presumed 828 also, but couldn't
really tell. The usual North Korean hum on 855 seemed to be absent,
and 972 and 1566 didn't even have much of a carrier at times.

Hope it was better earlier!

[IRCA] Radio and the FCC where are we headed?

2006-11-28 Thread Stephen Hawkins
IRCA,

Just spotted this ariticle from Variety.com.

FCC plans draw fire
Dems bash media ownership studies
 By WILLIAM TRIPLETT

As part of its current review of media ownership rules with an eye toward
loosening them -- which already has sparked heated controversy -- the FCC
announced plans to conduct 10 economic studies on the issue.
But the agency's two Democratic commissioners immediately attacked the plans
as inadequate and secretive.
Studies will focus on individual topics such as the impact of ownership on
programming; the relationship between cross-ownership and news reporting; and
the status of minority ownership.
Announcement, issued Wednesday, identified study authors, who will include
academics, FCC officials and the Nielsen organization. All studies will be
peer-reviewed, the agency said.
"Today's announcement of the commission's new media ownership studies,
unfortunately, raises more questions in the public's mind than it answers,"
commissioner Michael J. Copps said in a statement. "How were the (authors)
selected for the outside projects? How much money is being spent on each
project -- and on the projects collectively? What kind of peer-review process
is envisioned?"
Jonathan S. Adelstein, Copps' Democratic colleague, said the announcement
"ultimately undermines the public's confidence" because "the legitimacy of
the studies is directly correlated to the transparency of the process
undertaken to develop the studies and select the authors. The descriptions of
the studies are scant, lacking any sense of the commission's expectations for
scope, proposed methodology and data sources."
FCC chairman Kevin J. Martin has stated the ownership rules are outdated and
that limitations or restrictions should be eased to reflect the contemporary
media environment. When the commission last voted to ease ownership rules in
2003 along strict party lines, a federal court blocked the attempt, saying it
was unjustified.

Walt,

If I am not mistaken, I think I heard the Portland weather gal (Ch 2)
say that Vancouver was going down to 14F!!! Now that is cold and all of
the snow. At 32-33F here tonight as I type this, it is pretty icy
outside. We only got a dusting of snow off and on here. But that is
unusual for the coast. Fortunately, it will be warming up by Thursday to
back in the 50s.
The TPs have been in quite late to 1800 or there abouts.

Patrick
