[IRCA] Deed Restrictions and DXing

2006-12-19 Thread Les Rayburn
It looks like my wife and I are going to "downsize" in the new year, and
move into
a single level "garden" style home. The neighborhood is very nice, and the
move has
a lot going for it, but with radio some negatives too. Looking for some
advice on
how to cope---

Pros:
-
New Construction, so I can "plan" the radio room. Some things I've already
discussed
with the builder are putting in several 10 foot deep copper rods, all bonded
together
for a good ground. He's also going to run several RG-6 feedlines and some
multicable
conductors for antenna feedlines and rotor control cables.

Also, the power lines are all buried underground for miles. I've checked
reception
conditions with the car radio, and the neighborhood is super-quiet. Much
better
than my current home.

Cons:

Deed restrictions mean that outside antennas are going to be very limited.
Backyard,
inside the privacy fence, low to the ground. Nothing on the roof. No BOG's.
Likely I'll be limited to the active whips and Wellbrook Loop antenna
mounted near
ground level.

For HF amateur work, I plan to put up a horizontal loop antenna that will
run the
length of the backyard fence in a "square". Small backyard means small loop,
NVIS type antenna with an SGC tuner mounted near the house.

For VHF/UHF amateur work, I'll rely on attic mounted loops or a good Log
antenna on
a small TV rotor.

My plan with the active antenna is to mount them just inside the fence, up
about six feet (it's
a seven foot tall fence) and spaced their maximum distance of about 70 feet.

I'll put these both into the Quantum Phaser so that I have some ability to
null signals. Still not
sure how to mount the Wellbrook loop and it's small rotor. Perhaps on a
tripod
type mount in the middle of the small backyard.

I'm wide open to suggestions---

Re: [IRCA] KVNS 1700

2006-12-19 Thread Glenn Hauser
Let me explain that I am getting both IRCA and MWC in digests, but the IRCA
digests come a lot more frequently, so that is where I first saw Paul`s post
about 1700, and the only clip I had listened to was #3. I must have run it half
a dozen times and was convinced they were saying ``NVS``, but now when I play
it back it`s clearly ``KVNS``. Am I getting dyslexic in my old age? So never
mind my comments along those lines.

I monitored 1700 myself Dec 19 from 0635 UT, and it was mostly KKLF ( ``KLIF
570``) with C2C, and a hefty SAH of approx. 7 Hz with KVNS, which occasionally
topped it, with Tex-Mex music, such as at 0649 when a clear non-ID came through
as ``La Grande``. I guess that`s more impressive then ``El Bravo``.
Unfortunately, I dozed off before hourtop. 73, Glenn Hauser, Enid OK

Re: [IRCA] Palstar MW550P

2006-12-19 Thread Patrick Martin
John,

I have been using the MW550P for a couple years now. It works very well.
Sometimes that extra boost will bring in a station and the sellectivity
of the unit (2 KHZ) will help out cutting the QRM from a nearby sloppy
station without having to narrow the filters on the R8. The skirts are
very good on the MW550P. It is the best presellector I have ever seen
for MW.

Re: [IRCA] Palstar MW550P

2006-12-19 Thread Guy Atkins

John, I owned a MW550P and had mixed results. Initially the preamp was
noisy, compared to a Wellbrook preamp and a A.R.R. preamp which added no
audible noises to a signal. The noise only occurred with the MW550P at home
with strong MW stations nearby; on DXpeditions to the coast it was nice and
quiet. I had to send it back to Palstar. The reworked unit performed pretty
well and the noise was greatly reduced, but I was always disappointed with
the preselection below 580 kHz or so. The peaking or preselection was
minimal to zero from 580 downwards, which was a shame because that's where I
needed it the most due to certain local powerhouses.

I'd recommend getting one if you can be sure of returning it if it doesn't
work out. Also, be sure to assess your receiver, antenna, and local RF
environment to judge whether or not you really need a preselector. It may
not be needed at all to help you hear more DX. You may want to check the
archives of my former blog at www.sdr-1000.blogspot.com to read the entries
about the MW550P.

73,

Guy

I've pulled the wind blown antenna tangles from our pear tree down to
the ground, so I'm down to the ALA100 for now, until the new support
goes up. Things seems fairly lacking at 1530UT; carriers on
frequencies like 756, 1008 and 1503 seemed to indicate New Zealand,
but a good carrier has appeared on 1566 the last few minutes
(1540UT), so not completely dead from Asia.

I finally found the reference that I mentioned to Curt yesterday regarding
Radio Reloj being relayed to the other networks after 0600 Z.
http://www.amfmdx.net/amdx/cubanradio.html
"Rodriguez of R. Reloj; other stations may relay Reloj after 0600 UTC
(12/99 NRC" It's dated material but may help explain those ticks and
"diddahdditdiddahdit" that shows up in unexpected places on our dials.
There's probably nothing sacred about adherence to only relaying after
0600Z.

them from domestic stations. I plan on sending mine back to Palstar for
