Re: [IRCA] TPs for 30 March

2007-03-30 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Finally, this morning's report:

Each category below is for "best signal heard"; signals often at a lower level.

reasonable audios (though often battling w/splash):639 CC //5030,
774, 828, 1287, 1566 (really good at times), 1575, 1593 CC //5030

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise: 594,
747, 855 mostly hum, 945, likely CC, 963, 1134, 1386

Burbles in the splatter: 621, 864, 963, 1377, 1503, 1512

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by
splatter): 1278, 1475, 1539, 1548

972 was notable by its weaker than usual het.

best wishes,

Nick

Hello group,

Not a lot of time for DX tonight, but managed a new one during the gray line
propagation:

WKMI, 1360, Kalamazoo, MI, 3/30/07, 06:58 PM EDT. I think I was hearing 2-3
stations. Had a brief surge when pointing my loop antenna due west, and
heard a Meijer ad, station ID and ABC news at TOH. I am very happy with this

[IRCA] IRCA E-Mail Directory

2007-03-30 Thread Charles A Taylor
Crew,

Back before I was assigned to VOA Delano, I used to compile and publish (via
DX/SDXM) the Directory on the SUBJECT line above.

I'm proposing to revive that and run it, say, monthly. It would include URLs,
but NOT telephone numbers (unless there's enough demand for such).

Here's a sample entry:

TAYLOR, Charles A. Grifton, NC [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Nothing much. Just name, bare-bones QTH, and e-mail address and URL.

Reason I think it's useful, is that you wouldn't have to dig through past DXMs
to find an address. And you'd also know where a fellow IRCAer lives.

I was aggressive before, and if someone didn't volunteer that info, I'd
e-mail the member in question and ask permission.

Thoughts, anyone?

Yeah but...

Right now, they are sending far less power than they are allowed.
Really, right now, we don't know for sure how far the signal will go
when it gets powered up. I do remember the report though where it was
shown to be less.

I am waiting for the real world thing to happen but I expect total
digital some time in the next 5-10 years.

This morning, I had hash from hell coming from KUTR 820 in
Taylorsville, UT and KOA in Denver. I figured that if I was going to
be able to decode DX IBOC, this would have been it. Sadly, it didn't
decode. The analog was fine though. Its just that the digital
sidebands were huge but not enough to decode.

Re: [IRCA] Another perspective on AM IBOC

2007-03-30 Thread Patrick Martin
Kevin,

IBOC does not have static. True. However, there often is no signal
either. If analog goes away, then AM radio goes away. There is no
coverage with IBOC. You drive under powerlines, the digital goes away.
It just is not there. In the future, I am not sure if radio will have
many people listening anyway. Especially AM, when there are so many
choices.
With me, as a DXer, when driving my 1997 Dodge Carivan, I generally
listen to cassette. In the 89 Dodge I use for work, I only have AM & FM,
so I listen to the radio there. Like last night, I bought "Vivo", the
2000 Concert of Luiz Migel in Monterrey, Mexico. A great concert. I
liked it so much, I recorded the audio soundtrack off the DVD to play in
the van on cassette. My relatives listen to either CD or XM Radio in
their cars. With so many choices, radio is not a high priority for most
people.
As my old friend Chuck Boehnke used to say. "Radio isn't broke, so don't
fix it". A truer statement could not have been made.

Keith,

If 50 KW stations (5 KW IBOC) cannot cover their area, it would be total
suiside to drop analog. The station might as well be turned off and the
employees go home. You are right, advertizing is where it is. The
coverage has to be there.

This is where we disagree. I think that it was inevitable that it was going to
start but when real world situations occur then I think that the move to all
digital on MW will be a long slow process if it ever happens. By the time that
decision happens there will be too many other delivery systems in place for the
content that is now deliivered on MW. I think FM will happen but even there it
will not happen for at least 10 years (I remember reading those comments
somewhere in RW from people in the industry).

Once again real world situations will dictate whether it will work or not.
When Norbert has trouble with WBZ's HD signal (no HD at all) at approximately
45 miles that spells trouble. I'm sure WBZ's sales department will not be
thrilled with that realization. So picture this...MW goes all digital and
Someone in SE Mass will wonder what the hell happened to WBZ even if they have
an HD radio. Like I've said before I have trouble with a 5kw HD signal only 15
or so miles from me. All the odds are stacked against MW HD...terrible
coverage area...the need for some sort of external antenna to receive a 5kw
signal at more than 15 miles...I ain't gonna happen.

Sure they won't have any signal either unless they are within a very short
distance from the transmitter.
The continued argument "Just turn off analog" seems rather peevish and IMHO
does little to promote our hobby. Granted that hobby may change or not be
around in 5 or 10 years but the reason just won't be because of HD.

2007-03-30 Thread Patrick Martin
Keith & Kevin,

Comments would not have made any difference. The FCC has to ask for
them. That is in the rules. Like so many things, they had made up their
minds long before anyway. Second, with maybe 1,000 MW DXers in the US
(If that many), we don't count. We don't count as listeners, as in most
cases we are not listening to that station as a local. There are many
reasons. Like Keith said, this would have happened anyway. If they want
IBOC, they are going to get IBOC. The only way this will end, if it is
not supported by the sale of the radios and interference complaints from
other stations. As I have said before, the NAB gets what they want,
like so many other things our government does.

Keith,

I agree, IBOC will no be mandated. It wont be popular enough to be
mandated. The stations are not going to shoot themselves in the foot.
The only way that IBOC will win out is that people have to buy the
radios and there in no interference and we know those are big issues. It
will go the way of Quad. At least AM Stereo still exists for a few
stations, especially in Canada. I still get some on the radio in the 89
Dodge Van. The only radio I have that gets AM Stereo.

[IRCA] Another perspective on AM IBOC

2007-03-30 Thread kevin redding
Keith

This is where I am. The train has left the station. I figure that
there were some who had a similar situation when the FCC wanted to
move FM from the 45 MHz band to the current location. Once it started
on the way to being moved, it wasn't going to stop. Those who had old
Armstrong band radios had to get one that got the new band if they
wanted to hear FM.

Total digital is inevitable. If it was ever going to be stopped, it
would have been during the commenting period and it would have taken
a monstrous number of comments to stop it.

*IF* people still listen to radio, they sure aren't DXers and if they
somehow wander on to the AM band, and they hear AM that sounds ok and
has no static, they actually might like it. Who knows if MW IBOC will
DX? We do know that digital radio is not so affected by your TV with
the noisy power supply, the guy behind your house with an arc welder,
or even dimmer switches and touch lamps.

People, the average ones, they will like it because there is no
static. They only will listen though if the programming is good.
Nothing can fix that with a digital signal.

I complained about it to the FCC long and hard, but the train is
gone. Digital is here. We aren't going to change it.

2007-03-30 Thread Geralyn Hollerman
For those interested:

New Radio NZ International Documentary
Australian Country Radio 1962
Broadcast April 2 2007 + audio-on-demand

The Radio Heritage Foundation [www.radioheritage.net] has a new radio
heritage
documentary on RNZI during early April.

'Memories are made of this' is the Dean Martin hit introducing the
sounds of
Australian Country Radio in 1962. These recordings were made
off-the-air on a
reel-to-reel tape some 45 years ago, and now you can enjoy old
fashioned radio
again.

>From 2CA Canberra, hear an exasperated announcer ask listeners to
stop calling
the station about the new TV station opening that day, an excerpt
from the All
Australian Hit Parade, full station ID, local ads and more

The Wagga Wagga Agpex Woolshed Dance and Bar-b-que was the big news
on 2WG,
listen to those old fashioned time pips, full ID, and hear the polite
BBC style
voice of the announcer.2WG turns 70 years old in June.

>From 3BO Bendigo, you'll hear a great selection of ads for Menthoids,
Ford
Pills and Vincent Powders...plus the half century old version of the
ABC News
theme, lots of gongs and a great station ID...

Finally, from 3BA Ballarat, more gongs, a short story competition,
full ID,
news from the Courier Sun News Service and more

If you'd like to know what small town country radio in Australia
sounded like
nearly 50 years ago, be sure to listen in to Mailbox on Radio New
Zealand
International on April 2 2007.
