Re: [IRCA] NOAA weather radio information

2007-07-31 Thread Michael Hawkins
Art,

Thanks. I consulted this list first, and the 162.475 station which I heard
is not on the list. My RS WX radio has a three-position switch to pick the
frequency I want to use, so either its mislabeled, someone has moved to a
different frequency or its a station that's not even on the list.

I bet people in the Gulf States had a field day a few days back getting skip
all the way through the weather band. Didn't get near that high here, only up
to 97.1 MHz at my location.

Detailed info about NOAA transmitters can be found on their web
site:
www.weather.gov/nwr . For instance, the page /CntyCov/nwrCA yields a
list for California showing county, the county SAME code, transmitter
location, freq, call, and transmitter power. The listed transmitter
location is not precise. 162.425 is on Mt. Diablo but is listed as
Contra Costa County. 162.550 Monterey and 162.450 Monterey Marine are
on Mt. Umunhum, 162.400 San Francisco is on Mt. Pise in San Mateo County,
and 162.500 San Francisco is on Big Rock Ridge in Marin County. The
preceding more exact locations were gleaned from on-air monitoring of the
IDs.

did not ID (including TOH) and the Monterey one on 162.55 also did
not ID. The 162.475 station was extremely weak and I'd love to know
where it came from. All were running WX for SF and Monterey Bay
areas. At this time of year, I'm locked in on TV and FM DX but I
just happened to have a WX radio. I know they used to ID on each
loop of the broadcast, but the loops are also know extremely long in
 this location.

Probably so. Both Army and Air Force use A callsigns. Where the

The sea services (USN, USMC and USCG) use N.

Everyone else seems to use W or K. Even CIA gets callsigns.

Re: [IRCA] SOS in Morse code on the radio today

2007-07-31 Thread Tim Hall
Interesting - It's kind of surprising that their advertising department got
the Morse code right. That's pretty good attention to detail for marketing
folks :)

This reminds me of something that happened a few years ago. There was a DX
test on the east coast or maybe the midwest, on a fairly crowded channel. A
station much closer to me on the same channel ran a commercial including
some Morse code which just happened to include 3 out of the 4 letters (in
sequence) from the testing station's call letters. I thought we might see
a bunch of false reports from the west coast the next morning, but happily
we didn't (it would have been a pretty honest mistake). I can't remember
which DX test this was now...

2007-07-31 Thread W. Curt Deegan
Art,

That's a good reference web site, if not taken too literally as you
note. In addition to the anomalies you mention, even different parts
of the site don't always agree. My particular NWR station, KEC50 in
Palm Beach county, is listed at 1kW in the counties section but at
500W in the Marine section. Based on the better reception I get from
the Miami station KHB34, I tend to think the Marine listing is likely
the correct one.

[IRCA] WREM 710/780 Correction

2007-07-31 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Well, obviously in my subject line it said WCXJ but infact, in Scott
Fybush's report, it said WCXH. The WCXJ call letters belong to 1590 in
Kersage, PA.

Thanks to Brent Taylor, I have an audio clip which I posted for everyone..

I saw this on fybush.com this morning and wanted to pass it along for
anyone who doesn't read Scott's website but might want to try to log this
 new one..

*Up in Aroostook County, WREM (710 Monticello) has new calls and a new
frequency: Allan Weiner's AM signal is now WCXJ, and we hear it's made the
move up the dial to 780 kHz, where it will keep its 5 kW non-directional
daytime signal and add 60 watts of night power. Better yet - the website for
sister shortwave station WBCQ includes this nifty picture of a 1932-vintage
Western Electric 12A transmitter that's being restored for night use on 780.
(See link below for the picture)... Weiner claims - and we have no reason
whatsoever to doubt him - that the Western will be the oldest transmitter in
regular service anywhere on the AM dial in the country. (We've got to get up
there and visit the WBCQ/WCXJ site, one of these days...) *

And here's a pciture from WBCQ Shrotwave's Website which has a picture of
 the Western Electric 12A Transmitter:

Patrick,

It is/was illegal to send a false mayday or SOS, or other
emergency signal.

Of course, they don't know this, but I believe the FCC RRs
have that explicitly stated.

2007-07-31 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Come to think of it, I was in Part 73 of the FCC code
tonight, and false or deceptive messages are clearly
illegal.

I guess if it's included in an advertisement, then the
attorneys can argue it out.

[IRCA] Fwd: [HCDX] Hawaii - Oahu gets another dose of sports radio

2007-07-31 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

from the hard-core-dx list:

KUPA 1370 Reactivated

Oahu gets another dose of sports radio
THE talk was all Bill Walsh all the time on the sports radio station
yesterday afternoon.
Yes, it was probably on the sports station you're accustomed to
listening to, but it was also on KUPA-AM 1370.
The long-silent KUPA is broadcasting the national network programming
of Fox Sports Radio.
Utah-based Broadcasting Corp. of America bought the station two years
ago for $650,000 from another Utah company.

The station has a long history of call-letter changes, despite being
mostly off the air since Hawaii Public Radio Inc. sold it in 2002.
Broadcasting Corp. President Nathan Drage, an attorney, at first
thought he might put Hispanic programming on the station. By the time
his purchase closed in April of 2006, however, he was thinking about
sports programming -- and sports it is.
He could not be reached yesterday to provide details, such as the
studio or transmitter locations or whether he intends to put local
programming on the air.
At least four Oahu radio stations now traffic in sports talk: KUPA,
KKEA-AM 1420; KUMU-AM 1500; and KORL-AM 1180.
KKEA, branded as Honolulu's ESPN Radio 1420 AM, has been doing
sports-talk the longest and its morning show, hosted by veteran
sports-talker Bobby Curran has a devout following.
KUMU has recently rounded up a variety of well-known morning show hosts
to go head-to-head against KKEA, including Jim and Kanoa Leahey,
attorney and sports fanatic Jeff Portnoy and another duo -- Bob Hogue
and Jai Cunningham. Longtime broadcaster John Noland recently joined
KUMU in the afternoons, where his part-sports show is up against
another local sports show on KKEA.
KORL's sports block was added last year in a time brokerage agreement
with Starcomm Wireless. Its programming airs from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday
through Friday and from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturdays, according to the KORL
Web site.
At the moment, the difference between KUPA and its sports-spewing
brethren is that the stations also sell blocks of time for other types
of programs.

[IRCA] HD Radio on the radio (WXXI Rochester)

2007-07-31 Thread Scott Fybush
As I'd mentioned in a posting last week, my part-time employers at WXXI
in Rochester officially launch their HD Radio services over WXXI-FM 91.5
on Wednesday, 8/1 - and I get to do the honors. I'm guest-hosting the
1370 Connection talk show from 12-1 PM EDT on WXXI (1370) and
WXXI-FM-HD2, and invite anyone who's interested to tune in to our
streams at wxxi.org and to call in if you'd like. (585-263-9994 is the
number)

The program repeats from 9-10 PM EDT. I promise it will be more than
just cheerleading for an unproven technology!
