Glad to read that someone is getting DX.

Only thing I have on 1215 is IBOC from WPHT-1210 and that is covered by IBOC
from WOAI-1200.

Re: [IRCA] WLAC-1500 IBOC QUESTION

2007-11-11 Thread Milspec390
Willis -

Re WLAC iBLOC, dunno, haven't checked last couple days. Will do so.
iNiquity's li'l jammer spews noise all over M' Key from below 1500 to above
1520. At
times you can tune lower sideband of WENG 1530 to hear 'LAC's hash wafting in,
in same manner as the complex albeit familiar fragrance would emanate from open
sewer ducts jutting conspicuously from Mr. Vanderbilt's Newport, RI, The
Breakers, into the Atlantic would gently waft thru open windows, to the
thorough
enchantment of his summer banquet guests.

We no longer allow people to discharge raw sewage into open waters, no matter
how stinking rich, hubristic, and important they think they are. Why do we
allow a similar bunch of greaszeballs to pollute the RF spectrum, to the
annoyance of listeners in other countries?

Oh, sorry, forgot, we've 'no business listening to out of contour stations.'
When they quacked about 'reinventing government', what they actually meant
was, 'making it up as we bullshale along'.

What an achievement, jamming 50 KHz at a thousand miles! What a great way to
deny people vital information. Wonder what they'll really use HD for, since
it's obviously seen as an imbecillic joke by consumers?

Will look around 1500 - 1520 tonight, tomorrow, see what's what. As many say
of other stations who took the HD soup, WLAC's iBLOC does a workmanlike job
of 'masking' their analog audio. Long listened to them here at night, couple
good talk programs. HD's noise is fatiguing, so why support them now?

I replayed my file and didn't hear any chimes at the ToH, though the
signal was very weak then. I had a few words by a deep voiced man,
then what sounded like news in Russian by a woman until 0405, then pop
music. Later there was a talk by a Russian man for a few minutes at
about 0415. I suspect we were getting it well because the auroral zone
was in the right spot. Your propagation would have been via a
completely different path.

[IRCA] TPs for 11 Nov

2007-11-11 Thread njp
Don tells me my messages go out, even if I can't see incoming mail, so
thought I'd send today's results, this time tying to get my month right.
I'd said yesterday wasn't great, but it was absolutely fabulous compared
to today. For the first time in quite a while I had zero audio from the
TPs. Not even 774 could do better than a carrier today. Hope it's a lot
better on the coast, don't want John going back to OK on this note!

Last night's TA's certainly didn't live up to the promise of earlier in
the day. Heard several, but generally they'd pop up for a minute or two,
and that would be it for the evening. Noted audio on 855 (Spain), 891
(presumed Algeria given the music), 1107 (too weak to ID, but likely Italy
like the previous day), 1116 (unID), 1206 (France), 1215 (Virgin Radio
earlier, with the Russian taking over later), 1539 (Germany), and 1575
(Radio Farda).

[IRCA] UnID TIS

2007-11-11 Thread Arthur W Peterson
Stopped by 1610 on 11/11 at 0600 PST and noted local Berkeley TIS as
usual but also was hearing jazz music. Swinging the loop around to knock
Berkeley back, I found max signal on NE/SW bearing. Occasional voice
announcements with minimal readability sounded like they mentioned Marin
County more than once. Also mentioned AM 1610 and Information Radio
[now that REALLY pins it down!], but I couldn't dredge out any more. The
loop bearing corresponds to the Mill Valley / Corte Madera part of the
county. Anybody out there have specific ID info on this?? Also, I
thought someone said that playing a lot of music on a TIS was a no-no and
yet this was about 90% music.

Also noted a huge carrier around 1330 UT on 891 -- Thailand, I guess, but
any voice was lost to 890 nonstop voice QRM.

1340-1400UT 11/10 Chinese on 1134 was about the best on my dial for a
while, but faded at TOH of course.

[IRCA] TPs for 11 Nov 07

2007-11-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
The propagation monitor said that there was a pretty reasonable
sunset enhancement this morning from 1500 to 1520, but my own
impression from 1440 to 1515UT was of a good number of weak
carriers, from various parts of Asia. For example, the ones on 657,
819 and 855 were all N. Korea judging by the off channel hum, and
1206 would have been China if it had delivered audio.

But everything seemed weak, even the domestic splatter, so weak audio
was sometimes identifiable, such as China on 1017 and 639.

Asian unless noted.

Darn good audio, if briefly: none

Reasonable audio (though often battling w/splash) 594, 612 (DU in
spite of a weather forecast by a N. American accented woman), 774

Not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise: 675, 1017

Burbles in the splatter: 639, 702 DU, 882 DU, 1008, 1475 late, 1566
late (a huge carrier however; their modulation seems to be getting
poorer), 1575, 1593 late,

strong carrier, no audio: 738 DU, 972 with a one second SAH later, 1098

best wishes,

Nick

2007-11-11 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Anybody out there have specific ID info on this??
//
Your loop bearing is pretty accurate Art. The FCC database shows a TIS
on 1610 licensed to the Ross Valley Fire Service in San Anselmo. The
transmitter site is listed as 150 Butterfield Road. The call sign is
WPKX394 and the power is 10 watts. The control point and business
address is 777 San Anselmo Ave. The contact person is JoAnne Lewis at
415-258-4686.

The license specifies that they shall transmit only non-commercial
voice information but doesn't specifically prohibit music. There use to
be a provision that prohibited music on a TIS but I can no longer find
it in the rules. Many TIS stations broadcast some music content. The TIS
at Denver International Airport, for example, routinely plays seasonal
music during the holidays. They use the music as a bumper between
information segments.

[IRCA] TPs Nov 11: Decent

2007-11-11 Thread John H. Bryant
Since this AM was my last one to DX here until mid-May, I got up at
4:30 local time (sunrise 7:15 AM) to get the last bit of gusto before
we head back to OKlahoma. My efforts were rewarded with pretty darn
decent conditions, even that early. I had at least mumble-level audio
on virtually every channel from 738 to 1107 before the morning was
over and on about 50% of the rest of the channels. 774 Japan was the
strongest and the most consistent through the morning, but I also had
very listenable audio on: 828 Japan, 837 Harbin (excellent at times),
918 Shandong, 936 Anhui (not great-but best o season), 963 the
CRI Russian Lang. SVC, 1377 CNR1, 1386 NHK2 Synchros and language
recognition level on a slew of others.

The morning closed out for me with a het and then threshold audio
appearing once again for a few post-dawn minutes on 1548. Gonna have
to get at least to the language recognition level before I can start
bragging about DW in Sri Lanka, but this sure keeps my hopes up for
next year.

Since we don't like to drive much at night and the days are now
short, I'll be on line from various motels most evenings this next
week. Lord willin' and the creek don't rise, we project getting to
central Oklahoma by Thursday evening. We are hoping for a very
boring road trip.

Its been a wonderful season with so many high points that I hardly
dare think about them (leaving the lovely Pacific Northwest is
difficult enough as it is.) It was great hearing all sorts of new
stations, mostly here on Orcas rather than Grayland this year, and
the DXpedition to QCI was REALLY special. The most fun was spending
time with various old friends (getting older every season) and
meeting one new one... I finally got over to Victoria, BC in person
and got to meet Colin Newell for the first time, face-to-face. A very
nice man. Colin has provided several of my best grins, too. Colin
lives in a high-rise in Victoria... on the 8th floor or so. During
those great conditions recently, he found he could do better DXing
with his e1 by getting away from his DX desk hanging it (the radio)
out over the rail of his balcony, whip antenna extended. I've
heard of DXing bare-foot, but given the dark hour, Ol' Colin may
have had several other parts bare up on that balcony at Oh
dark:30! Colin, may this be the year that you and yours find that
perfect house with room for real antennas next fall, it would be
nice to be inside, I bet!

Although the Fall TA and TP season (from the Pacific NW) is obviously
winding down, I hope it continues to give you guys reason to get up
before dawn and stagger over to the radio I'll be reading the
list, hoping to be (mildly) jealous!

2007-11-11 Thread saulamdx
Niel and I heard Radio Colorado on 1060, went into
NASCAR at top of the last hour. Very weak under KYW
but steady for a bit, then gave way to Mexico City.

1140 had SS earlier, possible domestic as no other
latins in at that time, cx decidedly east west.

770 Virginia, new here...
1450 got legal ID for Rome NY, which has been a pest
of sorts with CHUC gone.

880 had old country, suspect KRVN (heard yesterday SSS

Suspect religion on 1140 is Alberta. MB 990 in nicely.

Re: [IRCA] TPs Nov 11: Decent

2007-11-11 Thread Patrick Martin
John,

This has been a Red Letter season for DX, even along the coast. All
these TAs alone have been really special. Have a safe trip back, and
like you I don't like night driving any longer either.
Hopefully next Fall will be another good one. I also want to thank
you with all of your help with the chokes. They have really helped with
directivity of the antennas. Without them, I may not have finally logged
KBRW Barrow.
Keep after all of those Canadians too. You may hear some, you haven't
heard here. A good beverage to the North may bring in Flin Flon MB on
590.
It was great to visit with you at Grayland a couple weeks back too.
With the bad weather on the way, hopefully you will get off the
island early before the high winds hit. Along the coast we ar looking at
possible wind gusts on 85 MPH. It wil be a short-lived stom, as the high
wind warning is in effect from 6AM to 1 PM. At least here.
Take care my friend and I look forward to seeing you again next year.

[IRCA] SDR remote operation

2007-11-11 Thread Craig Healy
I was looking over the SDR-14 tonight to see how it could be operated
remotely. It looks very easy. There is a program in the C:\Program
Files\Spectravue\ folder called SDRxxServer.exe which sets it up. Click on
it, hit Stop and change the port number to whatever is appropriate for the
internet router in use, and restart. Should come up in a Waiting mode.
This does require a static IP address on the host computer.

On the remote end, start Spectravue as normal. In the SDR-xx setup tab
change the Interface Selection to Network. Then in the Network area, change
to the correct IP address and port. Then start things as normal.

As a test, I started the server program and set the port to a convenient
one. Default is 5 which may not work on some routers or systems. Then
in the Spectravue program itself, I set the IP address to 127.0.0.1 which is
the computer itself, and selected the correct port. I selected the Network
interface, started it up, and it worked just fine.

I don't have a static IP address at home, and my office is too noisy
electrically. I'm going to see if I can set the radio up temporarily at a
client that does have a static IP and see just how well it works. This just
seems to easy to be true.

If anyone wants to test theirs out for remote operation, drop me a note
offlist. The SDR-14 and SDR-IQ both should work. It does require that
static IP address.

Picture one of these installed permanently at Grayland or Newfoundland...

overlap making it difficult for this morse code

Also heard 882 Wales, British talk male and female at
different times. Lots of hets, nothing inordinately
huge. That's a new one here. BBC wales is listed as

No signs of code, just those two Spanish stations. Have them phased to S-8
and getting some deep fades ever now and then.

So far the dominant station here in Victoria is CJGX, Yorkton, SK. ID's as GX
94 with CW format at good levels. Missed the first 30 minutes, but will

[IRCA] WFAW test

2007-11-11 Thread njp

Haven't heard any code here since the test was due to start, but oddly, we
did hear what sure sounded like code during the previous hour. With our
attention mainly on TA's I haven't gone back and checked the tape yet. I
do know the test has netted me a new station though, as I got a few
minutes of CINW from Montreal. Thought I'd check 800 after that and sure
enough, heard CJAD in there, for only my 2nd logging of that one.
Still TA carriers around, and France was in with a couple of minutes of
audio on 864 just after 0630 UTC. Beyond the regulars on 1215 and
1134, Sweden on 1179 has been doing well for much of the last couple of
hours. And, 1323 has just popped up with audio as I type this at 0638.

[IRCA] 12 Nov TA's in Seattle

2007-11-11 Thread Dave Korinek
Hi all,
The DX shack here in Edmonds, or thereabouts, is finally operating
smooth and reasonably quiet, thanks to the heavy use of those amidon
FT-140A-J ferrite chokes. Primary antenna is an 8-direction K9AY. Fed
into an W8ZR receiver Multicontroller. This allows good isolation so that
I can use any or all of the two R71A's, SPR4, FRG7, R75, or IC765. Nice.
I still need to recap and AGC mod the two Collins R388's tho.
Sitting on 940 right now, haven't hrd a trace of WFAW test yet.
Recap of tonite's TA DX: This was definately an above average opening,
0346-0520 1134 kHz Croatia in fairly good at times w/local type pop mx
3 long pips and YL ID at TOH
0401-0455 1215 kHz Russia YL tlk in RR presumed nx in also good at times
for the 2nd nite in a row. No sign
of Virgin R.
0413 693 kHz UKaudio finally surfaced nicely for a couple
minutes
 w/OM ancr in acc EE.
Carriers noted on 783, 828, 855, 864, 873, 981, 1377.
Strong carriers on666, 738, 909, 1017, 1206, 1269, 1422.
Thot for sure I was going to get audio on 1422, but conspicuously nothing...Dave

[IRCA] WFAW DX Test

2007-11-11 Thread saulamdx
Niel Wolfish and I have swep tones and occasional bits
of morse code, at Burnt River ON (north of Toronto).

Montreal is clearly dominant with Rollye James hosting
C2C talk about UFOs. Country music is likely Yorkton
SA. There's a sports talker in there to the south
which may be WGRP Greenville PA (based on a late-night
logging yesterday).

I think we're both about done for. Some LW TAs are in
well, still, but cx have levelled off. SA is in on
540, hints of AB on 1140, but signals not as good as
past night.

This test is appreciated. New catch here.

Neil, the Russian station plays a variety of music. So far, it's all been
Russian, but I would not categorize it as any one genre. When I heard them
clearly a week ago, or so, they did not ID as
Radio Rossii, but as another program/station. That is, Russkoye
Mezhdunarodnoye Radiyo, which translates as Russian International Radio, as
opposed to Russia's Radio (Radio Rossii) which is more of a domestic network.
