Re: [IRCA] WFAW DX Test reminder

2007-11-12 Thread k4ape

Not sure, heard what sounded like slow CW 0210 but WNRG Grundy, VA has been
to strong while they are still on day power and pattern. Very weak.

Did hear what sounded like a sweep tone at 0156, but not sure of that.

WFAW must have a pattern that nulls to their south east.

Did hear WMAC Macon, GA (again) with C2C.

[IRCA] WFAW --- I tried

2007-11-12 Thread Joe Miller, KJ8O
No luck with me this morning. Starting one hour before
the test, and using my Sony ICF-2010 and Radio Shack
loop antenna, I was able to get a null on WWJ's IBOC
splatter on 940, hearing CINW Montreal with
Coast-to-Coast, and CJGX Yorkton (presumed) with
country music. At one point, I heard some sports
scores, which I believe to be a third station, but the
peak was too short to get any ID.

At about 12:05 CST, I may have heard some very faint
Morse Code, and some sweep tones, but with
Coast-to-Coast playing music at the start of their
nhourly segments, I could not get any positive copy. I
then gave up at 12:38.

My thanks to Jim Pogue for arranging this test, and to
Ernie Swanson as well.

A darn fine morning. Asian all the way. Best morning I've seen in weeks. The
1st tier stations were very strong, and there were a whole lot of 2nd tier
stations. The JJ seemed to be on a rebound dominating, although there were
some good CC stations as well. Malaysia 1475 rated a 8+ at 15:25. WYFR 1557
was there. My highlight was snippets of audio on 1548 at 15:29 suggesting
possible Sri Lanka, but not enough to ID. I bet at Grayland this might have
been a possibility. Wonder how Patrick did this morning (assuming he's OK
after the big storm.sure had lots of wind here in Victoria all night
longthere'll be a lot of trees down I'm sure). Another highlight is
relatively decent
audio on 909 which is a first for me, with Village 900 owning the 10 kHz below,
and especially above 900 kHz. Chinese of some sort there. I've never heard
any audio there before. A total of 46 audios in this morning, right across the
entire band. Felt like an October morning again! ..Walt Salmaniw,

Just a comment and suggestion. I'm still listening to my mp3 recordings, but
suspect I won't be hearing the DX test. A large number of people reported

Some use EST, others CST, and quite a few others state no time zone at all.
This is highly confusing. In the SWL world, one only uses UTC. This is my
preferred format. In this way, there is no chance of confusion. Is there any
similar
protocol on the MW side of the house? If not, may I suggest we all use UTC, or
at the very least what time zone you are referring to!

[IRCA] WFAW 940 Test

2007-11-12 Thread chris and anne
The test was heard !!! I listened right on time at midnight CST and heard
nothing for the first hour, and fell asleep. I heard a lot of WMIX, Mt. Vernon,
Il. that first hour . Anyway, I awoke at 0242 hearing sweep tones.yippee!!
I listened for the rest of the test, and heard sweep tones again at 0251 and
also 0256.!! Never heard any morse, but I was delighted to even hear the
sweep tones. WMIX was the major pest here in northern South Carolina. WMAC in
Macon was nulled and not a factor. This test was of special interest to me as
I visit the Delavan , Wi. area a couple of times a year, and enjoy listening to
WFAW when I do.They carry Neal Boortz, probably my favorite talker. My
thanks to the folks at WFAW, especially Ernie Swanson, K9LO , and Jim Pogue and
any others for making this test possible. Test was heard on both the Grundig

[IRCA] WFAW DX Test - initial report

2007-11-12 Thread Jim Pogue
The first reports on last night's DX Test from WFAW are coming in. It looks
as though lots of their signal was going north and south, and most of the
more distant listeners - including yours truly - heard on Morse code and

interesting programming, including special music and PSAs for amateur radio.

Thanks to Ernie Swanson for running this challenging, relatively low power
test, and to everyone who listened. Please keep those e-mails coming, and
I'll publish a final report in a couple of days. Here is the preliminary

[IRCA] WFAW Test

2007-11-12 Thread Russ Edmunds

May or may not have been abale to be heard here. Got back yesterday
from LBI DXpedition and set things up for unattended recording - or so
I thought. Except I forgot to unplug the FM tuner and replace it with
the HQ-150 output to the computer...second time this season I've done
that ( WIRL was the first one ).

Between WPEN's IBOC and CINW I didn't have high expectations anyway...

Some use EST, others CST, and quite a few others
state no time zone at all. This is highly
confusing. In the SWL world, one only uses UTC.
This is my preferred format. In this way, there is
no chance of confusion. Is there any similar

suggest we all use UTC, or at the very least what
time zone you are referring to!

Montreal is clearly dominant with Rollye James hosting

Much the same here, with semi-local CINW of course dominant, and
GX-94 fairly good at times. The sports talker was definitely WGRP,
as I heard them ID at 0300 (2 Watts, eh?).

WFAW was unneeded here, but, as always, these tests are much

Both clubs had considered this back in the 1970's, and in the NRC, also
earlier. In both cases a smallish number of mainly international DX'ers
proposed it.

Since active international DX'ers do not comprise a significant
proportion of the membership of either club, the majority would
understandably be resistant to it, whereas most of those who are either
mainly international DX'ers or who do both are already quite accustomed
to converting.

We're not exactly talking brain surgery here - if you're in Eastern
Time, UTC is local time plus four hours in the summer, plus five hours
in the winter. So if I'm typing this at 1611 local standard time, I add
five hours and...presto! It's 2111 UTC.

That said, I'm content to go with the flow depending on which club I'm
reporting to; as long as there's some indication of what time zone the
reporter is in, and whether they're using local time or UTC, I'm cool
with that.

Neil,

My choice would be UTC for everything, being a foreign DXer, however,
since so many DXers are domestic, that would not be too popular. I know
of several avid domestic DXers that never even think in the term of UTC.

I received a very nice GX94 QSL card from them in March 2003. It was
signed by Bryan Mierau, Engineer. They also included a vertical fold
thank you for listening card signed by Lyle Walsh, General Manager. My

they responded quickly. I sent a standard written report in EE and

A Working Russco Pro Turntable. It may need a new needle soon, but it's in
otherwise good shape. Was working on a regular basis when removed from
service in Spring 2007.

A Uinited Press International Machine, unknown if it still would work today
if the service that it used was still around, but it appears to be in good
cosmetic shape.

A Coke soda machine where you select your product then open a small glass
door to get your product, the price on the unit says 30 cents

Ive got at least 300 records, if not more.. mainly ACish and urban. All in
decent, useable, playable shape.

Pictures of the coke machine and UPI machine can be seen online at
www.walkerbroadcasting.com and clicking Pictures.. they are about 1/3rd of

Re: [IRCA] 1200 WWV-like ticking sound

2007-11-12 Thread saulamdx
In our case it was just 1200, and onl lasted a few
minutes while the only computer here was off. I am
sure it was a conventional radio signal of some kind,
and my guess - since the LBI folks heard it on several
channels - is that it is from central or south america
or the carribbean. Perhaps Cuba. Niel in a very brief
conversation about this last night mentioned that
Reloj has some kind of different chime or sound on
some occasions - or something to this effect.

Thanks to folks on these lists who have 'chimed' in.
Looks like another mystery ...

[IRCA] TAs and other sunset DX

2007-11-12 Thread saulamdx
I had a great if very brief signal from Albania around
1700 on 1395, and TWR Roumoules 1467 also was solid
though weaker a few minutes later. Lots of hets, all
over the band.

1620 Radio Soleil, one of the Boston haitian pirates
with heavily-accented French and Radio Soleil ID
around 1730-1800, mixing with a new NY State Highway
advisory station that's been testing of late. I've
previously hard Energie; and soleil is new.

Poughkeepsie NY WKIP on 1450, plus an ID a bit
afterwards that sounded like 1450 WSL. Definitely
not WOL in washington. I think a letter got mangled
over the air, and my guess is the New hampshire
station (I was on my east wire), but I will try again.

Conditions seem very close in. Not much to the west at
all tonight. I have yet to check the AK indices...but
I do wonder if a bit of aurora is creeping in.

I went out to check the antennas this afternoon and found a 40 foot
Shore-Pine laying across the beverage, about 2/3's the way to the far
end. The wire isn't broken, but it will take a chainsaw to cut the tree
and move it. I will ask my neighbor about it later. If is isn't moved by
the time the ME test is, I will cut the wire and run it trough the brush
of the tree, so it would be straight again. But time will tell. Other
than that the rest of the antennas are fine. branches all over the

You know, Patrick, thinking back to the days of the cold war and the USSR,
sending reception reports to Radio Moscow yielded QSLs much more often than

You know, Patrick, thinking back to the days of the cold war and the
USSR, sending reception reports to Radio Moscow yielded QSLs much
more often than direct to the station. They were usually full
verifications as well, so if I were you, you might consider sending
to them. I'm sure that Golos Rossii has an address too, but there's
no guarantee that anyone there would speak English or
 careWalt.

WRTH indicates an address in Moscow which I noticed over the weekend.
You might try that.

Patrick, I'd say that mail theft is rampant, especially mail to outlying areas.
I would under no circumstances put any cash in the envelope. Mint stamps, if
you must, but no greenbacks! Asking for mail theft that way. I'd use a very
non-descript
envelope with non-descript stamps. That's the way to do it, and send it to the

[IRCA] Questions re 506 kHz, experimental stations

2007-11-12 Thread saulamdx
I've heard Wayland MA WE2XGR/1 506 KHz the past few
nights with a killer signal. I have actually copied
several similar stations on 506, including one with
the same calls but /6. I have also had a few
variations outside those parameters.

* What are these stations, and is there a
comprehensive list of who's who? (It's awfully hard
for a morse code neophyte like me to copy the code
when there are multiple stations on the same frequency
with very close to the same ID. They often overlap,
causing the ears at this end to emit their own code,
of sorts).

* I had one set of the same calls with /6 prceded by
CQ, which I take to be a common ham term for 'calling'
... but there was what I believe was a 'z' in between.

* I also had HHH preceding yet another unID set of
calls.

Any info on any of this is greatly apreciated.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Re: WFAW DX Test

2007-11-12 Thread saulamdx
I really like the idea of using UTC with DX test
notifications. But there is no avoiding the risk of a
time miscalculation. If using UTC, the person
organizing the test would need to make sure they - and
the engineer at the station- are both on the same page
in converting local time to UTC. This could get
tricky, especially close to a time change or when
dealing with an area where there is no time change.
So, no matter what system is used, UTC or local time,
the people organizing and running a test have to be
very careful to set the right time. It would of course
be pretty straigh forward for any DXer able to
calculate UTC. But wouldn't it be funny (Not!) if the
organizers of a test and the station got it wrong and
tested at a time when no one was listening... My
bottom line is I will happily go with the flow, but I
I could get very used to doing al my DX reportage and
communication in UTC, because it is universal.
However, that does not change the fact that we would
still have to take care with our time zone
number-crunching.

 want it.

We're not exactly talking brain surgery here - if
 you're in Eastern
Time, UTC is local time plus four hours in the
 summer, plus five hours
in the winter. So if I'm typing this at 1611 local
 standard time, I add
 five hours and...presto! It's 2111 UTC.

That said, I'm content to go with the flow depending
 on which club I'm
reporting to; as long as there's some indication of
 what time zone the
reporter is in, and whether they're using local time
 or UTC, I'm cool
 with that.

Try this site Saul:

http://www.500kc.com/

I also copied four stations in the 505-506 kHz range while on DXpedition
over the weekend. They included the one in Mass. you heard, plus one in NY,
one in CO and another in OR. There's a pretty good explanation of the whole
project on the website.
