Mine stared doing this after a week or so of use, only on AM,
and strangely only when tuning from high frequencies to low,
never when tuning in the opposite direction. Is worse at the low
end of the band. Only happens when tuning rapidly as well.

Re: [IRCA] SRF-59 problem

2008-01-06 Thread D1028Gary
Hi Russ,

This is Gary the reviewer, and I have probably seen more SRF-59's than
anybody outside of Tokyo. Out of twelve units I've tested, only one had this
problem Kevin's ex-turkey unit (now fully aligned and sensitive). Of
course, alignment does not cure this problem, and the unit still has the
scratchy sound when tuned. There is no cure I know of, except to replace the
tuning capacitor, which of course would require a part from Sony that may cost
more than the radio itself. My suggestion is that you take the radio back to
the place of purchase and get a quick refund, rather than waiting for a repair
job.

[IRCA] SRF-59 and the 5' passive loop

2008-01-06 Thread cafe

I pulled out my oak-frame 5' loop (from being moth-balled
by Wellbrook!) - rewound the wire, added the capacitor...

and Wahoo!

Does this loop ever cook with the SRF59, the Sangean DX200VX, et al.

I will take a few photos and post it in a few days -
I think everyone should have a big old frame loop
if they want to get the most out of their UL-Radio

Not a good thing.

This could be one of the 1st experiences with the

last long.

Chances are, your SRF-59 is still under warranty

Below is an example of my Utralight log page. I list the radio I use to hear

[IRCA] CFFX-960 Kingston, ON DX Test, 1/15/08 additional info

2008-01-06 Thread Jim Pogue
Additional info regarding CFFX DX Test

The BTC’s Canadian Connection – Saul Chernos – and I have been working
out some of the details on programming and QSLs for this test with chief
engineer Roger Cole. To begin with, here are the basics:

CFFX 960 kHz Kingston, ON DX Test

DATE: Early morning of Tuesday January 15 (Monday night).
MODE OF OPERATION: CFFX will test using its 10,000-watt daytime directional
pattern.
PROGRAMMING: Regular adult contemporary programming. Special test material
will consists of three hourly voice announcements followed by special test
material lasting several minutes. These will air roughly at the top of the
hour, at approximately , 0100 and 0200 EST, give or take a few minutes
depending on the program log.

Here is what we’ve worked out on QSLs –

For those DXers who seek a traditional “paper” QSL card, please send
your reception report, recording (mp3/wav on disk or cassette OK) directly
to Saul at the following address:

Saul Chernos
57 Berkeley St.
Toronto, ON
M5A 2W5 CANADA

Regarding return postage, be sure to go with one of these options:

 1. You may send Canadian stamps in an amount sufficient to cover
postage from there to your location. For Canada to the U.S., I believe it is
93¢ Canadian.

 2. Send $1 U.S. to cover return postage costs.

 3. DXers hearing the test outside of Canada and the U.S. may send 1
Euro. And DXers anywhere can send 1 IRC to cover return postage costs. If
none of these options will work for you, please contact me via e-mail and
we’ll work something out.

Saul will work with Mr. Cole to review reports, issue and mail QSL
cards, etc.

For those DXers who are happy with an eQSL, please send your reception
report and/or recording in either mp3 or wav format to both Saul and Mr.
Cole. Their e-mail addresses are respectively:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I hope this covers everything, but if you have any questions please
don’t hesitate to ask. Good luck to everyone on hearing this very special
test.

Were you using the '59 or one of your others You ARE keeping a

[IRCA] SUBMISSIONS for UltraLight Records and Firsts

2008-01-06 Thread John H. Bryant
FOR MR. NEW AND OTHERS WHO MAY HAVE MISSED THIS THE FIRST TIME THAT I
SENT IT OUT:

If you wish to to have a logging(s) considered for a particular
Record or First with an UltraLight receiver, please submit them in an
e-mail that is specific for that purpose and has some title similar
to " Submission for UltraLight Record." I don't read every e-mail
that is uploaded to IRCA's list (sorry :>) and I may miss your
request unless it is titled someway to give me a clue. These
submissions may be uploaded to the IRCA mailing list or e-mailed
directly to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For each submission, please give the usual details AND include your
name, location (town and province/state,) the receiver used AND
whether it was used Barefoot or in the Super Modified category. If
your submission is to be considered for a Distance Record, please
include the distance.

Please note that the only receptions that may be considered for
Records and "Firsts" are those completed with one of the UltraLight
radio models certified by the UltraLight Radio Technical Committee.
Until about February 1, 2008, this will be limited to Sony SRF-59s.
Receptions made with certified ultralight radio models other than the
SRF-59 will be considered, no matter what the date of the reception,
as soon as the certification process is complete.

As yet, there are no standards for the Super Modified category. All
Certified Radios that are connected to an antenna, whether directly
or inductively and all that have been modified in any mechanical or
electronic way would also be considered as being in the Super
Modified category for the purposes of Records and Firsts.

There are a number of categories that have no listed record
holder. If you've got a qualified logging, you could be the record
holder, until superceded. Please let me know these important bits of
UltraLight history!

[IRCA] Weather OT

2008-01-06 Thread Patrick Martin
Well on my way back from Astoria, I got in a blizzard for a while. Lots
of snow faling, but fortunately it is in the mid 30s, so hardly any
stuck, but the highway did get slick for a bit as it was coming down so
heavy. Snow is not common on the coast. Then tomorrow night Mon-Tues,
another Pacific storm will be hitting the coast with wind gusts to 65
MPH are possible. This has sure been one active Winter. I'll be glad
when March gets here as things will start to improve and most of the
wind will be over, but nearly another 2 months are still ahead.

[IRCA] Runaway Ultralight DX Train... Next Stop IRCA, and DXM!

2008-01-06 Thread D1028Gary
Distinguished Ultralight DX Brothers,

Because of the exciting Ultralight DX accomplishments far above and
beyond the call of duty by all of you, we are succeeding in radically
transforming the orientation of the AM-DX community. Boldly shifting it from
sedentary
servitude to pricey, boring, megaheavy receivers, we have succeeded in
spreading our thrilling message of freedom and liberation to all oppressed
AM-DXers worldwide! No longer do we need to pony up thousands of dollars and
sit
hunched over an oppressive collection of knobs and switches... we have
proclaimed our Declaration of Independence, brothers, and our Revolutionary
message
of freedom, liberty and DX For All is spreading like wildfire throughout the
USA, Canada, and the world!

Brothers, we need each and every one of you to boldly advance into the
thrilling Ultralight future, and spread our righteous message of total DX
freedom and enthusiasm into the distinguished AM-DX club that has nurtured our
explosive growth... The International Radio Club of America! It has come to
my attention that a few of you distinguished Ultralight DXers have kept your
fantastic DX loggings a secret, by not spreading our righteous message of
superb Ultralight DX Success into the hallowed pages of the Western DX
Roundup,
Central DX Roundup, and Eastern DX Roundup (not to mention the DX Worlwide
Listings). My brothers, how can we possibly advance our Revolution if we keep
our stunning success a secret? And heaven forbid, it has even come to my
attention that some Ultralight fanatics have missed out on critical Ultralight
Communication by neglecting to pay their IRCA dues, or neglecting to join IRCA
at all! My brothers, this Runaway Ultralight Train needs every Fanatic to
stay on board, contribute generously for our Mission Success, and together
proceed to ultimate victory. How can we possibly accomplish this sacred
mission
if some of our members miss critical communication that only the
Distinguished DX Monitor can provide?

My serious and urgent advice is that all Ultralight Fanatics unite,
stay together, and proceed in unison to
PayPal with military precision, flooding Lynn Hollerman with funds for dues
and renewals in a manner consistent with our legendary Ultralight enthusiasm.
Furthermore, it is the urgent directive of the Ultralight Commander (and
all Ultralight Lieutenants) that superb pocket radio DX loggings shall be
disseminated to the maximum in the Western, Eastern and Central DX Roundups,
so
that our critical message of total DX Freedom and Success shall spread like
wildfire, in furtherance of our righteous Mission to radically change the
orientation of AM DX from sedentary servitude to Lazy-Boy liberty.

73 and Good Ultralight DX to All,

This storm was not as bad, only gusts 60-70 MPH at its peak but worse
the farther South you got. Newport got a gust of 93 MPH. The one a month

[IRCA] Sony SRF-59 Totals Update......130 Stations now heard!!

2008-01-06 Thread Robert Ross
Hi Guys:

I managed to do a bit of late afternoon DX'ing on the SRF-59 today,
while waiting for the Wife to get home from work.

Managed to add 5 more stations to the SRF-59 Logbook bringing the Total
heard now to 130 Stations. I have yet to sit down with this Radio and not
get something new to add to the SRF-59 Logbook and quite often I am
adding to the Total Heard on any Radio Logbook as well.

The more I tune around with this thing..the more I wonder just what is
or isn't possible with this Radio. I'm having some problems trying to
figure out what frequency I am on at the TOP END of the Band as it is
squished up pretty good there. The bottom end is no problem as there's a
fair amount of space between stations. Man..I sure wish this radio had
Digital Readout.I think I'd have another 100 stations by now!!

I was joking about hitting 200 stations after I got 100 in 3 days.now
it doesn't seem that far fetched that we can hit 200and maybe a lot
more with some hours at the dials.

I know I can listen to any of the myriad of Receivers I own .all

[IRCA] Utralight WBBM 780

2008-01-06 Thread vroomski

Happy Sunday,

A personal best here with my furthest domestic heard early this morning.
WBBM 780 weak signal ID with KOH Reno null. Distance from
my Salmon Creek, WA home is 1756 miles. Total heard on the Sony SRF trio is
110. This ID was fast, the previous three station ID's took 3 hours of
listening time. Thanks to Kevin for the help with KUJ and e-mailing me
the Washington State Cougars radio web-site address.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] S Meter readings

2008-01-06 Thread Donald K. Kaskey
I don't know if it affected Patrick but it smacked us pretty good. Even worse
up in the Sacramento area. Driving around this morning/early afternoon noted
lots of downed trees. Power still
out in certain parts of the Bay Area. Eloise & I just stayed inside Friday
(the worst day). Still raining off and on but the wind has abated a bit. Our
back yard is a mess, downed fence,
litter all over etc etc. However, nothing unusual here, happens most every
winter. Pat & the Seattle guys just have to share the wealth with us Northern
Californians.

2008-01-06 Thread John H. Bryant
Excellent article, Gil!!! And the illustrations are truly worth1000
words. One thing that you didn't mention (or maybe I missed) is how
the outboard ferrite bar affects the vaunted nulling ability of the
'59. Better, worse, the same? I'm sure it would be an intuitive
judgement at this point, but whadda ya think.

That article just has to get some of our other "handy" folks to
work. Speaking of getting to work, in the Super-Modified category,
there are all sorts of Firsts and Records yet to be established. How
'bout some submissions???

You mentioned getting the vhigh Q tuning capacitor from "Bill
Turner's site," but didn't give a URL. I googled Bill Turner and
ferrite and got lots of references to him, but no website. Could you
give us the URL, please, and maybe append it to the article??

Thanks for the article... that is the direction that I'm going to head.

Hi all:

I just posted to dxer.ca the updated Ultralight Compendium, which catalogs
the numerous features and performance highlights of the known Ultralights
out there.

While the features portion is fairly complete, Gary's 2008 shoot-out will
fill in a lot of the performance ratings.

Please check it out, and let me know off-line (satya -at- sounddsl.com)
what comments, corrections and suggestions you have!

[IRCA] Ultra-light Radio web: organizing the documents

2008-01-06 Thread cafe

I am putting this out there now - so I can get better feedback on
how we can organize documents.

Here is my thought.

a.) Users (Content managers, etc) can submit PDF and WORD Doc. articles to the
document
area specific to Ultra-Light Radios.

b.) As time permits, I will create a "copy" of the document, reformat it into a
"UL-radio Articles" section of the web-page in Standard HTML format for people
to view and read "ONLINE" - as opposed to downloading.

Both will be available.

The bottom line is - viewing all these articles on the web-page is faster
and takes up less space (not that space is an issue, because it isn't.)
They will all be available for download - for those who want to print out, etc.

Keep in mind: Anyone can register on DXer.ca and have their user privilege
raised
to content manager for the purpose of managing their documents and
creating new articles on the website.

The DXer.ca website is a content-managed website and it has
editors built into it:
-So you can develop and deploy content online, upload pictures, files, etc.
It is way easier that most people think.

I find it interesting that this is 15 year old technology.
I wonder what's in the works now?

Also in the same issue of the journal was an article detailing a
single chip radio IC for use in car radios. It was designed for
digital tuning, but also implemented circuitry for a digitally tuned
front end, including automatic peaking of the tuned RF stage! I wonder
what car radios use it?

Again, if you have any, umm, questions about either of these
electronic, email-able articles, contact me off-list.

Reference to this "virtual audio cable" just appeared on the SDR-14

I haven't used it, but it looks like it might have potential as a
virtual audio switching unit. Given that some of us use the PC as
a recorder, and of course, the SDR-IQ and 14 audio doesn't become
audio until it's inside the computer, this might be of interest.

H Bill,

Oh yes, the storm hit up here, but it was much worse in California and
Southern Oregon. We had wind gusts 60-70 MPH, a garden variety type
storm for here. No damage here. Even my reconstructed beverage antenna
stayed up. That storm a month ago was the worst one in a century.
Hopefully we wont see another like that with wind gusts of 143 MPH. The
destruction from that one will be seen for a long time to come with
thousands of trees down and still many houses with tarps covering their
roofs.
For the record, we have had stroms this Fall/Winder on Oct 1, Nov 2,
Dec 3 (The big one), and Jan 4th, about every 31 days. Will we have
another on Feb 5th? Who knows? But it has been an active season. Thanks
for asking.

Re: [IRCA] SRF-59 Alignments: Performing the Service Manual Procedure

2008-01-06 Thread Saul Chernos
Looked at the instructions, but I'm afraid I don't have the equipment or
more importantly the patience and nimble fingers to do any of this. I'm
clumsy as all hell with anything small, though I don't mind risking a $15
radio ($30 in Toronto until I find cheaper somewhere). As for the recomended
shrink, perhaps a self-help group will do. For now the SRF-59 will be DXed
in its own unadulterated naturaal state. I'll have a better feel for what it
can do at Burnt River, where the conditions are much more sane than at my
downtown location. (I'm particularly curious to see it perform on FM at a
few of my FM DX sites up there).

Hi Patrick:
Heard on the news this morning that the NoCal, OR, and WA coast had
another storm. I did not hear all of the details. Did that affect you?

One could.

Any studies I have seen over the recent years pretty much debunk the
cell phone issue

I find that I often have difficulty keeping current with my 7 nightly
TOH GY recordings which are all of 9 minutes long each. While SDR's
offer some real benefits, I know where that road would lead at this
point.

Maybe after I retire, whenever that will be

[IRCA] SRF-59 Alignments: Performing the Service Manual Procedure

2008-01-06 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

The recent availability of the Sony SRF-PSY03 Service Manual (which has
circuitry identical to that of the SRF-59) has given us the ability to turn
total turkey units into screaming DX birds of prey!

After performing seven of these full alignments, and seeing all seven
units operating at peak sensitivity and DX effectiveness, it is certain to me
that the procedure is worth the somewhat tedious necessity of disassembly and
reassembly of the tiny little radio. Unfortunately, however, this process
does require good eyesight, patience, steady nerves, and confidence. The
SRF-59 is not a Heathkit, and was certainly not designed for user-friendly
disassembly, or reassembly. Understand that despite these simplified
instructions, this little unit is still quite capable of sending beginners to
the shrink.
Proceed at your own risk!

1) Turn off radio. Remove belt clip, headphones and battery.
2) Turn AM-FM switch to AM.
3) Without forcing, tune dial needle to far left stop (530).
4) Carefully note the exact position of the dial needle at this point.
(This is EXTREMELY important for proper dial reassembly!)
5) Remove the two screws from back panel. This will accomplish
absolutely nothing in making the panels separate.
6) Repeat to yourself, "This radio only cost 15 bucks."
7) Place thumbnail in slot between front and back panels at the
bottom edge of the radio. Work thumbnail in slot repeatedly,
carefully separating the front and back panels at the bottom
edge, first at the left side, then the right. This process may
require several minutes. Do NOT use tools!
8) After bottom edge of radio has significant separation between
front and back panels, slowly work up the left and right side
of the radio, to increase the separation. Gently rock the
front panel back and forth horizontally to increase the
separation, WITHOUT any forcing. Do NOT use tools!
9) When proper separation has been achieved between front and
back panels, the top edge may be separated by gently lifting
front panel circular plastic surrounding the headphone jack,
which will complete the separation of front and back panels.
At this point, the back panel may or may not break off from
the circuit board, but it is certain that the dial needle's
plastic gear will fall out of its front panel slot, making you
think that the radio is destroyed. Repeat Step #6 above.
10) Remove back panel from circuit board, if not already removed
(simply pull apart the small spot of glue).
11) Attach battery to contact spring (negative) and clip (positive).
Tape may be helpful in keeping in the contacts in place.
12) Turn on radio (center left switch on circuit board), and plug in
  headphones.
13) An RF signal generator is required to verify frequency
coverage from 520-1750 kHz. If you do not have one, at
least verify coverage from 530-1700 kHz by checking
received stations close to these border frequencies.
14) If an RF signal generator is available, set it to 520 kHz,
turn the radio's tuner fully CCW, and peak L3 (the
red-slugged can close to the loop stick) with a non-
metallic (plastic or wood) flat-bladed alignment tool
to obtain loudest headphone volume of the carrier.
15) If an RF signal generator is available, set it to 1750 kHz,
set the radio's tuner fully CW, turn the circuit board over,
and peak CT1 (3/4) (the upper right trimming capacitor
on the tuner) to obtain loudest headphone volume of the
carrier. This is a sensitive adjustment.
NOTE: The frequency coverage has been perfectly
set on all seven units as received from the factory, so
lack of a signal generator is not a serious problem.
16) Turn the circuit board over, and use a very small flat-
bladed screwdriver to carefully scrape away all the wax
bonding the smaller loop stick coil (the one closest to
the tuner) to the ferrite bar. Clear a slide path on both
sides of the coil at least .25 inch long, free of wax, for
the next step. Verify freedom of coil to slide either way.
17) Set RF signal generator to 600 kHz, and set radio tuner
near 600 kHz (or, if RFsignal generator is not available,
use a live WEAK signal near 600 kHz for the next step).
18) Tune in RF signal generator signal, or the weak live signal
on or near 600 kHz. Carefully slide coil along ferrite bar
with a NON-metallic (wood, plastic) probe to peak the
received signal. Perform this step repeatedly to find the
exact spot of strongest, clearest audio (NOTE: This step
is the one most important to improve factory-unit
  sensitivity).
19) Secure the small coil to this spot with a piece of tape, or
  small spot of woodworking glue.
