[IRCA] NE Oregon TPs, Saturday
I think this would have been a good morning to be at the coast. Many MW hets up and down the band, especially the upper. Many places I don't usually hear a het. Actual received audio was poor, and didn't seem to favor Australia, though 891 with DU talk was my best, at poor/weak level briefly, 1152 utc. 648 with EE EZL type music, poor, 1155 utc; 657 with soft music, very poor/poor at 1159 until 670 turned its IBOC strong heavy hiss on at 1200 utc. wiping out 657. 1503 and 639 were close to audio. 1737 KUT PNG beacon at good level, and heard anytime I checked from -1200 utc. 180 and 279 LWBC Radio Rossii at poor/weak level early on, 1104 utc. Of the various radios I monitor, that have the same antenna going to all, and that have the audio switched to the headphones, the AR7030 is consistently the best at pulling out weak audio. The Harris RF590 is about the same, but is not nearly as easy to jump around in frequency with. Re: [IRCA] Sony ICF-EX5 Extra Sensitivity Portable Now Available on eBay
Hey guys: I too was the fortunate recipient of a SW-5 from Gary, and it's simply the most sensitive portable I've ever used, amazing for its modest size. The urban RF near Seattle here gives it fits with various mmixing and image signals, but for sheer pulling power, nothing can beat it (except maybe the Uber-SPR with the Amidon/Litz coil Gary has created...). 73 - Kevin S Bainbridge Island, WA Gary, Yes, a great little radio. I am looking forward to what it can hear in Flagstaff AZ in Sept at the IRCA convention there at nearly 7,000 feet. With two locals and both going to flea power at night. DX is location location location. The DXERs up North WA/BC get the TAs better than I do but the TPs/DUs are better here. LA's are few here. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] Sony ICF-EX5 Extra Sensitivity Portable Now Available on eBay
Hi Kevin, I'm very happy that you and Patrick like your ICF-S5W's, and hope that you both will hear lots of fun DX with them. Both were fully aligned for top sensitivity, and if you can tolerate the congenital image reception issue, they are a blast to use on the open frequencies. As an AM-DX sensitivity fanatic, the S5W was my favorite portable for many years, with its USA map on the back panel, the drum dial rotation system for ten different areas, and the green/red LED tuning lights. The new Amidon Prison Radio combines the SRF-39FP''s sensitive IC chip with a frequency-optimized large loopstick, however, to push the AM-DX sensitivity into a monstrous level. It is far superior to the vintage-loopstick transplant models in sensitivity, and to all classic AM-DX portables. At only about $50 in parts (and not requiring an LCR meter for construction), I'm hopeful that many tinkerers will feel motivated to build one of these DX dynamos, after the article is posted. 73, Gary **Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. [IRCA] TP's for Jun 7
Listening between 1150 and 1210UT yielded very little this morning, though the propagation monitor said it was the best morning for DU signals in several days (with peaks about 1220UT after I'd thrown in the towel. pretty darn good audio (at least briefly): none reasonable audios (though often battling w/splash): none not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise: none Burbles in the splatter and noise: none Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter): 738, 1548 So, really not exciting at all. best wishes, Nick * Nick Hall-Patch Victoria, BC Canada ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
