Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Russia 180
Patrick, I have heard modulation on 180 KHz at local noon during several winters in a quiet location. The carrier is always detectable with a BFO. 180 (Petro) sunset is around 0510 UTC this week. 279 has been the strongest TP this season out here. Full listenable quality on consumer Grundig portables with their built in ferrite antennas. In fact, 279 beats 774 and 972 in reliability night after night in terms of what I would call a monster signal. The Alaskan longwave beacons with voice weather have also been strong, including 529 KHz in a battle with Cuba on 530. 73's Brock **Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. [IRCA] Excellent New Article featuring the "Safari SRF-59"
A couple of weeks ago, Gary DeBock received a note and photos from a radio amateur, Walt Heskes, KC2KML who had discovered "Ultra-Lites" through a presentation at his local radio amateur club. He was intrigued, asked Google for further information and found dxer.ca Soon there after, he ordered SRF-59s and receiving them, discovered "the dial problem." Being a handy fellow with a large junk box, he and his son soon set off to marry excellent 1920s dial technology to a modern Ultralight receiver and created the Safari SRF-59 and rediscovered MW DXing in the process. Walt was kind enough to document the Safari in photographs and tell us of his adventures rediscovering MW DXing in the new article: Rediscovering BC Band DX via the Sony SRF-59 "Safari" We have just posted that file to the Ultralight Files section of "Downloads" at dxer.ca. Its a great story and another approach to solving the dial problem... this time with a LIGHTED dial! Give it a look. Re: [IRCA] Slider Loopstick Cancels Out Image Reception
Hi Colin and Kevin, The Sony ICF-SW7600G and GR models have a serious image issue 910 kHz below strong locals, but the loopstick is a non-alignable type like that of the ICF-2010, meaning that a Slider-type loopstick is not a possibility to correct the congenital image problem. Almost all other traditional BCB DXing portables (RF-2200, ICF-S5W, etc.) with image issues can have the problem corrected or minimized by the use of a Slider loopstick, or tuned passive loop antennas (which can help minimize image reception in any receiver). Both the ICF-SW7600GR and the ICF-2010 benefit greatly from larger transplanted loopsticks, however. Sensitivity is greatly boosted, with no apparent negative effect on selectivity. But the images and spurious signals are also boosted, since the larger transplanted loopsticks have nothing like the Slider's ability to tune out these nuisance signals. Colin, KONP-1450 in Port Angeles must have a fantastic salt-water transmitting site, because I have even received it here in the null of local slopper KSUH-1450, during rare night conditions. It was a very satisfying psychological victory, to receive another station right on this foreign language Mega-pest's own frequency :>) 73, Gary **Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. Re: [IRCA] Slider Loopstick Cancels Out Image Reception
Hey Colin: My Sony 7600GR also has substantial problems with images, and like you I don't have any other receivers that have images to that extent. Even the stock Eton e100 fares better on images. Using an outboard Terk loop or similar in adjacent orientation to notch out 1450 allows good reception on 540; still, it is notable how strong the image problems on the 7600 series are. Methinks Sony had shortwave in mind when they designed these. [IRCA] Iceland-189 for breakfast
One thing I really like about this time of year is that Iceland-189 can be heard as late as 1115-1130 UTC. At this late hour, there is still a path of darkness between Iceland and North America. It's fun to listen to a LW TA while getting ready for work in the morning. This morning, Dec 8, Iceland-189 was in with a decent signal with news by man & woman in Icelandic from 1100-1109 UTC. By 1115 UTC the signal was completely gone. As we approach the Soltice, the signal should stay in a little longer. According to GEOCLOCK, sunrise at the transmitter site near Gufuskalar is around 1105 UTC for this date. -- Marc DeLorenzo South Dennis, MA http://www.wtfda.info/showthread.php?t=228 ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] ICOM IC-7000
Craig, I have no first hand knowledge of the IC-7000 as a medium wave receiver but I can tell you its receiver performance on the amateur bands is not very highly rated. There are a couple of interesting presentations on Rob Sherwoods page: (1) showing it has amongst the lowest rated close spaced dynamic range of any receiver (note it is very close to the bottom of the list) and (2) Rob refers to an agc problem which intensifies QRN. The poor numbers for close space dynamic range is a problem for weak signal reception in the presence of very strong signals which is often encountered in amateur radio contesting and DXing. This is not a good radio in that application but would be less of a problem on the broadcast band. But the QRN problem looks much more serious. Check out his web site at: http://sherweng.com/ http://www.sherweng.com/documents/Dayton2007w.ppt#267,1,DSP Radios Not Perfect Hope this gives you something to think about. My impression is a 7000 is more about size and features than it is about performance. I'm thinking of replacing the Palstar R30CC in my truck with something that will give me access to the ham bands. But, stellar MW reception capability is key. I like the ICOM as it appears very versatile, and the few mentions of MW use on reviews in places like eham seem positive. I would like the opinion of someone who is doing a fair bit of BCB DX though. Thoughts? Know anyone who has one of these?
