Re: [IRCA] Western Ireland Report / G8 Report

2009-09-22 Thread Greg Coniglio
Hi Jim! Glad you were able to visit that amazing part of the world as well!
Western Ireland was something else. We also drove through the Burren where I
thought of DXpeditions because of the barrenness and lack of local QRM. It
sounds like Ireland has completely abandoned AM - and that explains 567 being
missing?

Also disappointed on the lack of variety of stuff on AM, and no sign of North
America really, even though we were in what is our equivalent of North America.
My UK Radio Guide arrived after we got home so I was able to check on some
transmitter locations - with some of those high power RTE Radio 1-2 Today FM
transmitters in the west of Ireland, I wonder if those could be 2Es targets
across the ocean, after what happened this past summer. Congrats on Spain -
Tropo?? MS? Nothing like that heard, I had been listening for the possibility
of NW France, but nothing. That might have been more likely in Co. Cork or
Kerry vs. Clare where I was. The best I managed was some Tr to other counties
like Mayo and Tipperary - which after reviewing a map are not as far as you
think!

The left handed driving was indeed a factor that reduced DXing somewhat: for at
least a day and half (and it was only a 4 day trip) I was too nervous to do
anything but stare at the road - that DOES take some getting used to!

Thanks, Jim, let's plan a convention in Shannon someday! ;)
Greg

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

It appears that Greg and I got our orders from DX HQ mixed up because we
both went out to Western Ireland around the same time checking on reception
conditions there.

Grundig G-8 barefoot on the Dingle Peninsula and The Burren (Ireland) last
week - no TA signals noted. Disappointing, especially with no Irish QRM,
since the only legal Irish station left is LW 252. Nice selectivity on the
G8, though.

Lots of Europe, of course. As Greg Coniglio noted the Iberians are strong
up and down the band, but nice deep nulls by moving the radio around.
Nothing that we haven't heard in Newfoundland, though. I didn't have a lot
of time for DX. It would have been ideal to get up near dawn to try for the
TAs, but I spent too much time pubbing at night! In case you are wondering,
I did get a chance to play a fiddle tune in one of the pubs. I wasn't
chased out with broken beer bottles, but they didn't invite me to play a
second tune!

In Newfoundland I easily got Euro signals in the afternoons on a crappy 10
kHz rental car radio, and I half expected the same in reverse from Ireland.
Not this time.

I had a little more fun with FM. Definite weak Spanish on 100.4 for a few
moments the afternoon I arrived in Dingle, but then nothing else other than
Ireland. There's a SER station in the Madrid area on 100.4 with 10 kW.
It's 900 miles between Madrid and Dublin, so about the same distance from
where I was, looks like long tropo. The Continuous Rain made tropo very
unlikely.

The FM channels in Ireland are mostly in blocks of spectrum with
transmitters spread around the country, RTE1 from 88-90, RTE2 from 90-92, R.
Galtachta 93-94, etc. There were also wide gaps in the spectrum where Es
and tropo could easily appear. We happened to drive by the Radio Galtachta
studio in the middle of absolute nowhere on the north side on Dingle, but I
didn't think to take a photo for Scott. This is the Gaelic only
broadcaster - and the best music on any channel - by far!

Not so easy DXing while driving left-handed! Even when I was a passenger as
my wife drove I had to be a very active co-pilot - lots of two-way traffic
on one-lane roads with no shoulders.

[IRCA] TP for 22Sep: Pure Asian

2009-09-22 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Missed the boat a bit sleeping in to 13:23 or so, but then got at the dials.
Seemed to be another very good morning with a big difference from yesterday:
virtually no DU post-dawn enhancement. I also felt that the JJ were stronger
than yesterday, and perhaps the other Asians a bit weaker, although that may
have been the result of me getting to the dials later than usual. SF 72, A7,

KVNA is operating with it's licensed power, but from a longwire of only 185
feet, so that would account for a less then stellar signal.

Checking the FCC database, no KBXZ is currently licensed.

Paul

Last year at the IRCA convention we had a tour of KVNA-600 and we were told
that they were operating with less than 1000 watts. It had been off the air
but is now back on. The Fox Sports station on 1650 has been on the air for
several years. They are heard all over Flagstaff and they even have ads. I
went to the station and they told me they are part 15 station! Arizona has
many of these 15 stations and even Prescott has one. And I know that they all
have more power than they should have.

[IRCA] TP DX for 9-22-09

2009-09-22 Thread Bruce Portzer
Today's DX was more interesting than yesterday. I woke up at 1320 today
and listened until just after 1400. Except for 594 and 693, the NHK
powerhouses were very much subpar, but some of the commercial stations
were better than average. The upper part of the band was interesting at
about 1200, or at least that's what the SDR files revealed (I was asleep
at the time). There seemed to be a narrow enhancement window around
1340-1350, in addition to the gradual drop in domestic splatter I noted
yesterday.

[IRCA] TPs from Orcas Island: Sept 22

2009-09-22 Thread John H. Bryant
Things were quite similar to yesterday... The lower band was below
average and only really saved by quite a burst just at max dawn and
the upper band was the best of the season, for me. Above 1100 was
still not great, but yesterday and today were far better than I have
seen so far this season. Of the two, today was the most productive.

Several of us have been noting that the second and third tier of
Japanese have been missing... or have stated that we haven't been
hearing many JJ commercial stations. I've kind of concluded that the
missing high band has largely been the culprit. Don't know why I
haven't put the two things together before. Rapid decline of gray
cells with advancing age is likely the cause.

The JJ commercials above 1100 kHz, all IDs presumed but pretty solid:

1107 JOMR, Kanazawa (first of season)
1242 JOLF, Tokyo
1260 JOIR, Sendai (first of season)
1278 JOFR, Fukuoka
1287 JOHR, Sapporo
1332 JOSF, Nagoya
1350 JOER, Hiroshima
1422 JORF, Yokohama
1440 JOWF, Sapporo (smokin' at max dawn)

Note, too, that these are scattered over the whole long country, not
concentrated in Hokkaido and northern Honshu islands as is often the case.

The other main interests were:

702, VOR Japanese Service doing fairly well throughout dawn

1224 finally rose up to audio this morning and it was an Asian pop
music station in non-JJ or CC. The only real possibility I see is a
second KBS 3 Voice of Love station. I don't really remember being
conscious of the Voice of Love in previous seasons. Love the name.

You all have a great day... another beautiful one in upper Puget
Sound/Victoria.

that KVNA-600 in Flagstaff is back on the air. The signal is very poor much
like is was at the Flagstaff convention last year. Also KBXZ-1650 The Fox
Sports station is back on the air.

Re: [IRCA] Convention and KVNA-600

2009-09-22 Thread Mike Sanburn

That explains that I guess. I remember spying their little antenna last year at
the convention. There's something you don't see everyday. I hit a torrential
rainstorm with lots of lightning about 25 miles east of Flagstaff, almost had
to pull off the road. Blowing a radiator hose in Kingman was no picnic either.
Nontheless, I love going to AZ and NM!! Mike Sanburn

[IRCA] Sandia Peak, NM antenna farm

2009-09-22 Thread Dennis Gibson
Before leaving Albuquerque last Sunday I went to the Sandia Peak Tramway in
search of the Sandia Peak antenna farm, the home of 23 FM radio stations and
probably every TV station in the area. It's two miles from the top of the
tramway, the longest in the United States, to the antenna farm, which is about
10,500 feet above sea level. I'd planned to get up there around mid morning and
walk to the site.

However I didn't get there until after noon, leaving no time for getting any
closer. I decided to see if I could get any decent photos without leaving the
top of the tramway. I didn't expect much, but much to my surprise my new
camera, the one I used for the Albuquerque tower photos, did pretty well.

As I was walking up from the parking lot much to my surprise I saw a broadcast
STL antenna and a two bay FM antenna on top of one of the buildings. Of course
I had to get a couple of photos of that. With a little research I found out
that it's an auxiliary transmitter site for KQTM 101.7. The main transmitter
site is nearby (but not on Sandia Peak) and they run 3 KW ERP from there. The
auxiliary site is licensed to run 200 watts ERP.

Here are my photos of the Sandia Peak antenna farm and KQTM's auxiliary site:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcgibson55

My photos of the KKOB studios should be up within a few days. My 8GB SD media
card, which has those photos in it, and my three year old card reader aren't
talking to each other.
