2009-10-04 Thread Robert S.Ross VA3SW

HI Guys:

Well...they always seem to come in bunches, and this morning at

logged for the ULR LOG# 700 and # 701. These were RELOGS for the
OVERALL LOG however

Number 700 was from NORTH DAKOTA...I was hoping for a GRAVEYARDER for #

Glad to finally get over the 700 hump for ULR Stations...and now on to #

It took me 9 Months and 6 Days to go from 600 heard to 700 heard on ULR.

Total time to hear 700 Stations on ULR was 21 MONTHS and 4 DAYS.

So...with that out of the way..the Ultralight Radio Trek continues on
the way to # 800how long is anybody's guess???

Radio Used...SONY SRF-T615 ULR

Antenna Used...2 1/2 Foot Homebrew Box Loop

Well, another morning of Chinese dominating the dialPick any

KPUG, the usual Russians on 549 576, Thailand only on 1575 this

but no Filipinos noted. Even Vietnam 675 was not very good, but Huhhot

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 4 Oct 2009

2009-10-04 Thread Nigel Pimblett
About an average fall morning here, though as Patrick noted, it was the
Chinese dominating. The Japanese were below normal, with little noted
from second tier stations. China had audio on 639, 918, 945, 981,
1017, 1044, 1206, 1323, 1593, with 981 and 1044 doing the best.
Finally heard a bit of audio on 675, but since Patrick mentioned Vietnam
wasn't strong today it may not have been them. Korea was in on the
regular channels, with the south heard on 972, 1134, 1170, 1566, and the
north on 819. An unID on 603 was likely Korea also. A number of
others to be checked on the Perseus recording, but that might be a
while, as I need to check last night's TAs too.
That's it for me for a few days, as the job has me out of town. As
usual, that happens when conditions are great!

[IRCA] TP for 4Oct09 from Victoria: Good Asian morning

2009-10-04 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Listened this morning between 13:18 and 14:30 UTC. A more northerly reception
this morning, with southerly stations weaker than usual. Overall a very decent
morning, especially on the higher band (but I started there and worked down, so
perhaps a bias). The JJ 1st tier stations weren't nearly as strong as usual,
especially 594, although Hokkaido 567 was booming in. Here's the list, with
6 unless otherwise noted. By the way, SF72, A0, K2.

558: KBS2 at 9 at 14:06
567: 9 level NHK1 at 14:07 and weak cochannel.
594: 8 level NHK1 and cochannel at 14:07
603: 9 level KBS2
612: Brisbane at 8 level
621: CC and North Korea at 7.5 level. North Korea on 621.905. The neat thing
is I'm able to notch out either the N.K. or Chinese station (on exactly 621)
with Perseus
and hear either one or the other station! Very impressive, and even more so on
the waterfall where the notch simply shows as a black hole!
639: CNR1 at 9 level 14:04.
640: Thanks to Colin for messaging me that KYUK was in loud and clear at 14:03
with local weather. Very good.
657: N. Korea at 7
702: 6 level. 2 stations on 702 and 702.031
720: 6 level 720 and 719.84
738: 7 level at 14:13
747: 9 level NHK2 with English lesson at 14:13
756: 7
774: 9 level NHK2 with English lesson. Still 8.5 at 14:30, but lacking the
punch of yesterday.
783: 7 level with pop music at 14:15 and oriental cochannel.
792: 7 level
801: 7 level talk plus wobbly N. Korean on hi side today.
819: no audio but 2 transmitters on 819 and 819.076
828: 8 level NHK2 at 14:18
837, 846, 855, 864, 873, 882, 918, 927: all 6
936: 9 level CC at 13:18
945: CNR1 at 14:20 7 level
963: CRI RR at 7.5 at 14:21
1008
1017: 7
1134, 1143, 1152: all 7 at 14:22
1161: CC at 13:59 at 8 level
1170: 8 level strong CC music, and another CC speaker at 13:57 under KPUG, so
perhaps both KBS and VOA?
1179
1188: 7 level
1206: As Patrick pointed out, very strong today at 9 level in KK (Yanbian) on
1205.981
1215, 1224, 1233, 1242,
1251: 7 level. Perhaps VOR CC ?//7300 plus another CC station plus possibly
yet another cochannel at 13:52
1260: Prob JOIR over domestics at 8
1269: Several cochannels. CC and wk muddy audio from someone else. 7 level.
1278: 8 level JOFR
1287: 9 level JJ at 13:44
1296, 1314
1323: 7 level with music
1332: ? CC at 13:43 7 level
1341, 1359, 1368
1377: CNR1 at 8 level
1386
1440: 8.5 level JJ over domestic at 13:32
1458: John's great catch. Audio here at 7 level and possibly // the SW 7270,
but SW not propagating well until well after LSR here.
1467: 7
1494: 7
1503, 1512, 1539: all 6
1557: WYFR at 8 level, except for significant splatter (much more than last
season) at 14:23
1566: 8 level HLAZ at 13:25 and same level at 14:24
1575: pretty much a 10 at 13:25, but only 7 at 14:24 for VOA
1584: again 3 carriers at 6 level
1593: CC at 7
1602: NHK2 parallels weakly heard at 7 level, despite major splatter from 1600.
1701: weak audio at 6 late, with 3 carriers noted on 1701.008, .034 and .050

That's it from a windy but blue sky Victoria! .Walt Salmaniw

[IRCA] A Good Asian AM on Orcas, Too.

2009-10-04 Thread John H. Bryant
I bet that the guys at Grayland will have really cleaned up this AM.
Here on Orcas, I finally got things fired back up and it was a very
good mid-season Asian morning here.

Conditions seemed variable. VoV on 675 was almost absent during parts
of dawn and at other times, it was romping in near S-9. I noticed the
same variability on some off the Korean signals, too. Interestingly,
810 was dominated by CC this morning. I think that must have been
Zhejiang RGD News from Hanzhou, on the central coast near Shanghai.
I'd like to catch an ID, but did not.

819 North Korea has been the nicest, cleanest signal from the Koreas
(except maybe for 1566) all fall, but this morning, it had a big fat
spur on one side and was distorted.

The most interest for me this AM was 882. The dominant signal was CC,
likely Dalian, but under that was an unusual (weak) Asian language
and they played distinctive tones at 1400 TOH. If I got a decent
recording, I'm gonna try to ID... hoping that it was Sri Lanka, using
TWRs 400 kW transmitter. Have all fingers and toes crossed.

Mostly, like Patrick said, China, China, China.

Re: [IRCA] A Good Asian AM on Orcas, Too.

2009-10-04 Thread Bruce Portzer
China China China is how I would describe yesterday at Grayland. The
Japanese were either missing then or had to contend with Chinese
interference, as did many of the usual Koreans (1566 for example was
being buzzed by something in Chinese and freqs like 1053 and 1422 were
mostly Chinese). We heard several IDs that didn't match anything
listed, so Mister PAL Log has some work cut out for him.

This morning was closer to average Grayland conditions, being good from
just about everywhere. The Japanese were abut normal levels, as were
the Koreans, but Chinese stations were still in abundance. 1251 sounded
like a Chinese graveyard channel at times. Sri Lanka 1548 was in again,
though not as well as Saturday morning.

I had 810 China today as well but it was always well below KGO. Chuck
and Nick had the Russian there, but I apparently didn't tune past at the
right time. We also had something in Chinese on 882, as well as
something in an unusual language - we're hoping it's Mongolia but it
will require re-listening to audio files to tell what it was.

A couple of strange ones from today - 648 at 1420 had weird flute music
with a middle east flavor to it. Not sure what that was, maybe
Tajikistan but probably something more mundane. 1107 again was heard
with weird singing accompanied by a plucked instrument and, later, had
talking in a language I didn't recognize.

We now have lots of files to listen to.

Re: [IRCA] More Victorian TA audios

2009-10-04 Thread Bruce Portzer
We had a few TAs last night at Grayland. They were best on Nick's ALA
loop, in part because the Beverage faced the wrong direction for TA's.
963 was the strongest, with audio just below language recognition level,
but likely Finland. 1053 had weaker audio seemingly from 2 stations,
possibly a mix of Britain and Libya. I noted hets or carriers from 1215
1134 999 1512 1269 1251 1161 855 1179 1341 but no audio. It was nice
to put some TA icing on the Grayland cake.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-4... Chinese here, too

2009-10-04 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

Although the DXing environment was far less desirable than Grayland, the
Chinese were unusually strong here, also.

Again testing the new 9' box loop in the back yard, around 1358 there was
pretty strong Chinese music and then Chinese speech on 1053 kHz, with only a
weak trace of a co-channel ((Korean or Japanese). China has never been
heard here on 1053, so I'd be interested in how the Grayland group (Bruce,
Chuck and Nick) identifies this station, which was also mentioned by Bruce in
his short report today.

Besides this, the perennial weak Chinese on 792 kHz showed up around 1405,
in the typical male speech format-- but not strong enough for any ID
clues. 756 also seemed to be Chinese, but too weak to make sure. In general,
the
conditions seemed a little down from yesterday, with stations like
675-Vietnam and 666-JOBK not as strong as usual. As typical, the morning
enhancement fizzled out here around 1410 UTC, after about 20 minutes of good
conditions. It's always a scramble to choose the best frequencies during this
all-too-brief enhanced period, which seems far shorter than the leisurely
openings at Orcas, Victoria, and (of course) Grayland.

I caught the odd sounding signal on 882 behind China too. I should have
stayed around a bit longer. well, there is always tomoroow. However,
when I got home tonight, my noise is back with the dry weather. PPL is
supposed to come out this week, so hopefully they will find it.

John, I checked my audio on 882 before 14:00 and it was at good level, except
for splatter. Damn that splatter! As is so often the case, it did gradually
fade just before the TOH. At 13:55 it was
close to an 8. I'm not sure of the language. Just non-stop talk. I sure
didn't hear any IS or tones before the TOH, unfortunately.
Don't forget I'll be at the dials next weekend from Friday night local to

[IRCA] MP3 of KYUK 640Khz - staggering quality

2009-10-04 Thread cafe

http://www.dxer.ca/file-area/doc_details/263-kyuk-bethel-alaska-october-4-2009-part-2

I have never had such clear reception of an Alaskan station -- my luck and
style I guess.
I am particularly proud of this segment.

Eton E1 with a Wellbrook ALA100M a 7M loop about 3' above the ground... yes.
3 feet.

Enjoy!

Good catch, and thanks for giving me the heads up on it. Sure enough, it was
coming in just fine here as well, but with QRM from CNR1 on 639!, so I had to
use USB to avoid that. I think your location was enhanced by the hills of
Vancouver Island also blocking some undesired domestic MW stations too.Walt.
PS: Checked my SDR and yours is much better. By the way, it was at 14:01 and
not 13:59 (splitting hairs, but presumably your Date/time stamp is a little
off. I know
mine does that more often than the laptop, and I calibrate mine daily on the
computer).

[IRCA] 1458 Nei Menggu RGD + ?TWR Sri Lanka?

2009-10-04 Thread John H. Bryant
I was able to spend some time this evening working with 20 minutes of
audio from 1458 on October 1. I was unaware of the 1440// that Chuck
mentioned hearing. Its not listed in PAL... or at least I couldn't
find it. While I was hearing 1458, I did check the SW//s that PAL
has for that Nei Menggu outlet and found 7270 active. The top signal
on that frequency was a strong Japanese signal, but under that,
unmistakably, is the same stuff on 1458, so off that report will go,
with fingers crossed for a sympathetic staffer who reads English.

I've not had time to deal with the very-maybe-tentative 882 TWR yet,
beyond processing the recording. Its got bells or chimes as an
interval signal at 1359:45 and then possibly two sets of pips at the
hour. If its not TWR, maybe I can post the bells and see if someone
recognizes it. I'm darn sure gonna be sitting on 882 at 1400 tomorrow :)
