Re: [IRCA] TP for 7 Nov from Kona Hawaii and the Tasman
Hawaii is something like John Bryant's Easter Island locale - the potential for 'getting it from all directions' is high. Even here at night the dial has more than its share of continental North and Central American stuff -- hearing Spanish on a variety of frequencies -- and get this: Left the WRTH at home... Using the PAL online for the pacific stuff when required - Pulled the Eton E1 out this AM at 0600 local and was amazing at what was on the upper half of the dial - sounded more like tuning the 49M band at local west coast dawn with a barrage of Kiwi and Aussie accents, Island stuff and Asian languages thrown in... and 20 more days to go! How will I cope? I know: Walt and his family are at sea for 25 more days! By the by: Will be testing out some aussie made loop antennas while here -- they were shipped direct to some friends near Captain Cook, Hawaii who are finding them interesting to look at. Will be giving out Hawaiian coffee farming hosts a complimentary Eton E100 as a gift. -- .. Checked for hets, and only came up with a single 10 kHz channel of 1180 in SS. Any ideas? Plenty of CC (I think they were mostly Cantonese) activity as well. Southern Star had to be the commonest station heard. Boy do they ever ID frequently! Another interesting note is that Newstalk ZB plays quite a bit of music. I didn't expect that! [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-7... More Weird Chinese Co-channels
Hello All, This morning's TP propagation may have been slightly down from yesterday, but there were certainly plenty of interesting signals to go around. At 1435 the 828 kHz frequency was a battleground, with a weakened JOBB fighting it out with a Mandarin Chinese station playing Chinese music. Both were at approximately equal strength, with the frequency sounding like a graveyard channel. This was one of two Chinese co-channel frequencies reported by Nick from an October recording-- the other was 774, which is pretty much hopeless here because of 770-KTTH splatter (and JOUB). At 1505 a weakened 972-HLCA was mixing heavily with a Mandarin Chinese station, which was broadcasting news with a male announcer. The Korean station finally prevailed over the pesky Chinese, dominating the frequency until general TP fadeout around 1515 here. As reported by Nick, Bruce and Nigel already, the strong 648 kHz TP signal is indeed the VOR's Chinese service, restored back to the strong signals which were typical last year. I guess we all missed our chance to dig out weak co-channels on this frequency :-) In general, the November propagation has been spotty, but there are many obscure TP's waiting to be logged on the frequencies of the weakened NHK and KBS powerhouses. Like most DXers in previous seasons, in November I would check these "powerhouse" frequencies, find the NHK signals down, and assume that TP propagation was mediocre. Now it's clear that TP propagation isn't necessarily down just because the big gun NHK stations are weak-- and that we have many chances to try for rare, obscure TP's when these "big gun" stations go into their seasonal demise. Now the only problem is to identify all these UnID Chinese-- a dilemma it seems we all face :-) 73, Gary DeBock Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30" loopstick) Main receiver: Modified C.Crane SWP (7.5" Slider loopstick + CFJ455K5 filter) 9' and 6' (side) PVC tuned passive loops (in the back yard) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] TP for 7 Nov from Victoria, BC
Started listening around 1425 today, and there was maybe a small sunrise enhancement. The Japanese big guns needed time to find a worthwhile signal strength, but there wasn't much else in their place. May have had Farda on 1575, but nothing like yesterday.Overall, quite a number of audios but not a lot of memorable ones; still maybe a bit better overall strength than yesterday though. Oh yes, 648 seems very likely to be VoR between 1400 and 1500UT in spite of the schedule. It was noted this morning //5930 w/CC talk by woman along with vocal mx, at 1450. pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least briefly): 279 R. [IRCA] TP's this morning
This would have been a very good morning at Grayland, judging from what I heard at home. Once again, I recorded chunks of the band on the SDR while I slept The high end was rather exciting around 1500, but unfortunately, I only recorded until 1510 so I'm not sure how long the opening lasted. I was able to hear bits of the JOIB-747 signoff at 1600 just after I got up so stuff may have stayed in for quite a while today. I have a lot of notes after going though the SDR files, so here are the highlights for now. I may follow up with a complete listing later: 1557 Unid Chinese w/5+1 pips & CC talk 1500. WYFR may have been there later 1548 decent carrier, but lots of domestic splatter 1440-1510. I think it was producing audio(talk) but I couldn't ID the language. I may give it another listen later. 1539 carrier visible on the display during a 2 second pause in KXPA-1540 programming, possible repeat of yesterday;s UAE reception 1530Two Chinese stations mixing with KFBK 1455-1510 1521 carrier, but way too much 1520 splatter 1512 Unid CC talk 1501 1476 4 long low + one long high pips 1500, then CC talk 1431 3+1 pips just like NHK & KBS at 1500, but neither one has stations there and little else was heard. One thing that was interesting last night with LBI, and I've also noted it when doing real time DXing with Barry, is that the TA's can fade up at the same time at each location, and I'm wondering if TP's might do the same. best wishes, Nick * Nick Hall-Patch Victoria, BC Canada ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] 747 and 774 Japan

This morning was my first try at hearing TPs this season (almost my first try ever from this location), and it looks like I picked a good time! I dragged myself out of bed and got to the radio at 1050 UTC, and immediately checked for audible hets - all told, I counted about 35! Nearly all were in the lower half of the band. At first glance, at least, the strongest were 693, 747, 774, 828, 972, and 1098 (later, some others, including 702, 738, and 1134, became prominent). First audio noted was on 693, with a female talking, but badly mangled by CINF. Next audio was found on 828, also a female speaker. Then, around 1115, some audio on 1134, but washed out by IBOC (carrier frequency was 1133.995 - not close to anything in the mwoffsets list). Then, a man talking on 747... this quickly became the star of the morning, with audio every time I checked, until well after local sunrise (1150 UTC) here. I have some good recordings from this station that I'm sure could be easily understood by a Japanese speaker. I also had some fair audio on 774, but this was much more challenging due to stateside interference. Lastly, I had some faint but intriguing music on 1098 at around 1150 UTC. Carrier frequency of this one was 1098.003 - again, no mwoffsets listing... Marshall Islands, maybe? 738 seemed promising (two strong carriers, measured to be 737.9992 and 737.), but CFZM was just too strong to get past. 702 also had strong carriers, at 701.9964 and 701.9995, but WLW put the hurt on me. I haven't had a chance to review my recordings for ID'able material from the others yet, but 747, at least, is a slam dunk - my first TP, and a new country here! I'm taking the liberty of crossposting this to the IRCA list, to save typing all these details again. An exciting morning! [IRCA] Good TPs: Orcas Island
I was at the dial from 1450 until I quit for breakfast at 1525, with things still going fairly well. LSR=1505 or so. It was a very good late season opening with 50 or 60 in some form of audio, from bottom of the band to the top. Most were the usuial suspects at greater or lesser strength than recently. However there were a few things of special interest: 585: There were two stations o/u One was NHK1, the other, I think, was the VOR transmitter at Belogorsk, running RR. 594: I think that I had than "new" Korean running with NHK1 675: A generic CC was o/u VofV 720: CNR2 again 810: The Russian, again 918: The echo was so pronounced and lagged so far, that I though there were two stations there for a few minutes. I'm still watching 1548 like a hawk and I'm picking up a het on channel and an even stronger one that is 50 cycles or so to the downside of 1548. I think that I'll give the Europeans a serious try tonight, despite my granite filter. [IRCA] Alberta TPs for 7 Nov 2009
Today seemed rather mediocre, but I think that's mostly because it suffered in comparison with yesterday's excellent conditions. On reflection, it was still not a bad morning.648 was again doing well, and heard the VoR interval signal just prior to 1400. Murphy's Law decreed a short fade through the hour, but certainly the progamming after 1400 still sounded like VoR. CNR1 was doing very well on 639 and 981 this morning, and I also heard it on 1593, which is the first time I've logged it there this season. A second station was in the background on 1593, but too weak to determine much. 73, Nigel Pimblett Dunmore, Alberta ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Excitement in New Jersey - Reception of TPs
This morning (11/7), we tried for Trans-pacific stations, and had a flurry of exciting activity right around dawn (Details will come later). Audio was heard on at least two channels, but not strong enough to be 100% identifiable - 747 (Japan) and 1134 (South Korea or Japan). Carriers were seen on 594, 693, 774, 828, 1098, 1206, 1566, and 1575 (plus maybe some more). We did not have the most optimum antenna set-up and will try to make some changes for tonight. [IRCA] WLAC 1510 interference
I'm in western rural Newberry County, SC and have been hearing telemetry under WLAC. It is intermittent, and I have heard it on a bunch of different radios, including my car radio on a trip back from Columbia one night. Has anybody heard this? I reported it to Eric Rice at the Atlanta, FCC office. [IRCA] TP hunting on the East Coast
Bruce Portzer dropped into the Starchat #mwdx chat room as the TA's here were started to fade out. We concentrated in some possible frequencies which might yield TPs, 693, 747, and 774. All three frequencies have potent TA's on their, and for a while there is an overlap time when it is sunrise in NW Asia and Sunset in NE Asia. So I tried to sort things out to see if I was receiving either late TAs or Early TPs. It looks like they were mostly lingering TAs. However, a couple of times I thought I MIGHT HAVE HAD some Japanese talk on 693 and 747. More later after I am had a chance to listen to the recordings.
