[IRCA] Sushi for breakfast (the appetiser)

2009-11-16 Thread Chernos Saul

Sushi for breakfast in Nfld. Quite literally, with 774 and 828 talking in JJ
about bluefin tuna. Started earlier than we expected. Also logged both North
and South Korea, Taiwan, China, and maybe a language we concluded we didn't
recognize. Jean Burnell has enough Perseus recordings to keep busy till spring,
and I have a few dozen from the AOR I'll be working on. There was audio on more
channels than I could manage. Some of it close tom airchair, where I was
listening in AM mode, and even at times - just for the sheer challenge of it -
on the more unfriendly sideband (as opposed to the friendly one). No sign of
Down Under. This seemed a transpolar TP event. On the rare occasion I bothered
to check, no sign of the western U.S. states or Canadian provinces. Though I
probably had OK 1170 and TX 1630. I did have an Asian dominating 1170. Like a
smorgasbord all-you-can-eat - it was a challenge keeping iup with all the audio
that was happening. Many strong, many also weak and marg!
inal. It lasted to around 1130 UTC - well after 8 am local time, about an hour
after sunrise. Including the Japanese stations, which surprised us. This was my
first ever TP event.

Southerly stuff not so good. We had some fairly northern and relatively weaker
Russians and ex-Soviets. Not much Brazil noted. More into Europe, though not
like last fall when

One note: We noted NHK2 Japan running Spanish and (I think) Portuguese, in
addition to some English and Japanese. So if you have Spanish on 774 etc in the
morning, it might not be a lingering Spain.

Hello All,

This morning's TP reception included a strong signal from 738-BEL2
(Taiwan
Fisheries), providing a chance to record the new Tecsun PL-380's DSP
filter
 options during actual TP-DXing.

The recording linked below has the PL-380 receiving 738-Taiwan at 1443
UTC,
in the face of some splatter from 740-KCBS in San Francisco. The MP3
starts with the PL-380 on the 2 kHz setting (for the best combination
of audio
and selectivity), then steps briefly down to 1 kHz-- followed by
approximately 5 seconds in the 6 kHz, 4 kHz, 3 kHz, 2 kHz and finally
the 1 kHz DSP
filter options. This recording was made with a signal boost provided by
an
experimental 9' sided PVC box loop.

_http://www.mediafire.com/?mnznomi5zwj_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?mnznomi5zwj)

The recording is dramatic in showing the effectiveness of the 7434 DSP
chip
in providing outstanding selectivity (for a $45 radio). Hopefully it
will
be of interest to prospective purchasers.

Hi Nick/all:

Things stayed fairly tame and generally deteriorated here as well,
although 864-Paris came up for a while in order to // with their Web
stream, and 756-Deutschlandfunk was strong enough to almost // with the
web stream. 675, 693 and 1134 came and went throughout the night, 1215-UK
was up for a bit with music, and 963 (presumed Pori) again made a late

[IRCA] TPs Orcas Island: Nov 16

2009-11-16 Thread John H. Bryant
It was a fair to poor late season morning here, with the only thing
seriously in audio above 1100 kHz. being 1575 (more later). Below
that, about half the channels having at least some audio, a few times
at decent level. The JJs Guns were all there, most at poor levels,
strong audio at least briefly on 531, 594, 639, 738, 819, 828, 918,
945 and 1017: a gen-u-wine eclectic mix.

1575 was quite interesting. I had the dominant VOA Thailand in
Burmese or something before 1500. I was also hearing Farda at times
beneath (// internet) At 1500, there were two sets of pips of
somewhat different character, off time by about a third of a
second. There was no VOA ID on Thailand at 1500 and it began a news
program in EE, with a bit of music... it was focused on Pres. Obama's
trip to Asia and relations/activities between the USA and various
governments in East Asia. It announced, in EE as Radio
Saranrom, 1575 kilohertz.) It was an interesting program that I
listened to most of the time from 1500 until 1530. At 1530, they
began a program in (maybe) Korean. What fun. I don't know if this is
a regular 30 minutes of EE news or a special program due to the Obama
trip. In any case, it and the Farda occasionally beneath it,
enlivened an otherwise dull late season morning!

[IRCA] NW Washington TA/TP for 16 Nov 2009

2009-11-16 Thread satya
Hi all:

Confirmed TA's last night were
675 (R Maria)
693 (BBC 5)
864 (Paris Radio Bleu)
1134 (Croatia)
1215 (Absolute Radio)
Also from across the Atlantic:
 - 756 was almost assuredly Deutschlandfunk, but I couldn't quite match
the web stream to it.
 - 1017 had what sounded like Russian language news, but I couldn't be sure
 - Big hets on 747 and 909, but domestics kept me from hearing anything

As for TP's this morningmeh - a little better than yesterday, but
nothing inspiring
594 - JOAK was the only station to get a boost at sunrise - everything
else was basically gone by then.
639 - CNR1 //5030 with decent level at 1421
648 - music briefly at 1454, sounded like Chinese music
738 - what sounded like Taiwan Fishery music at 0350, but heaviliy
splattered by domestics
1170 - presumed KBS competing remarkably well with semi-local KPUG
The JJ NHK2 outlets on 693, 747, 774 and 828 were all in at one point with
weak audio, good enough to // between the four, but weak under splatter

[IRCA] TP for 16 Nov from Victoria, BC

2009-11-16 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Slept in a little this morning, starting at 1445UT; could have slept in a lot
longer I think, at least as far as DXing goes. Very erratic signal fade ups
(seeing mostly they were down), and a mild improvement in conditions as 1500UT
approached, and shortly afterwards.Except for a weakish VoA - 1575, not
much upper band activity at all.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

639 CNR-1 //5030 at 1452UT; most consistent TP after this time
774 JOUB at 1455UT; often in the murk
828 JOBB at 1503; very messy on hour, mixing w/CC pips

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker,
though often battling w/splash or noise):

576 Mayak likely at 1456UT
594 JOAK
747 JOIB, not until 1505UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker

279 R. Rossii at 1501UT
567 JOIK //594
603 mx, possibly Korea?
648 some mx just before hour, faded by hour, VoR?
972 HLCA likely at 1501UT
1575 VoA, didn't check the other antenna for Farda

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

531 JOQG //594 at 1509
558 at 1510UT
783 at 1507
792 at 1507
945 likely //5030?
963 big carrier, bits of audio at 1512UT
1134

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

666, 1098; 1566 didn't make the grade at all this morning.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] What's up with KOTC-830 My 830?

2009-11-16 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Got only a brief chance to DX this past weekend - and added two new to
the ULR only logbook. I also missed some wild Midwestern tropo, too.
A few Central Indiana DX'ers had UHF DTV stations over 600 miles.
Impressive!

I'm inching (and only barely) toward 200 in the ULR book. I'm missing
some obvious ones and even a few channels (970 and 1390 for instance)
are completely missing but as I put some more time and effort into it,
I'll get there.

What is up with KOTC 830, Kennett, MO? Weren't they picking up and
moving to Memphis?
http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=151192.0

I heard classic rock on 830 and My-830 non-ID's, late Saturday
afternoon. This is KOTC. They are no longer SS, as stated in
Wikipedia. Very nice classic rock songs! Monster signal but sub par
modulation. Conversely KFUO on 850, also from MO was putting out a
great signal AND sound. Both are relogs but new to the ULR book.

850 KFUO MO Clayton 11-14 1730 Strong w/REL programming. Way

830 KOTC MO Kennett(?) 11-14 1733 G signal w/poor modulation. Lots of

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-16... Uninspiring

2009-11-16 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

After yesterday's disturbed conditions, this morning's TP expectations were
not high-- and the band certainly lived up to the low expectations.

A quick scan on the modified ICF-2010 at 1420 revealed very poor TP levels,
with weak audio only on 738-Taiwan Fisheries and 666-JOBK (for some
bizarre reason). The other NHK powerhouses were only moderate carriers from
1420-1430. It was an easy decision not to set up the large loops in the back
yard.

Another quick ICF-2010 scan at 1455 revealed that the band had improved
somewhat-- to mediocre conditions. The NHK powerhouses now had weak audio,
along with weak audio on 603-HLSA, 639-CNR1, 648-VOR, 657-Pyongyang and
972-HLCA. These were not the desired conditions, however, and it seemed
hopeless
to stick around to try for anything new.

Despite the two-day doldrum stretch, from previous seasons I recall that
mid-November propagation is usually better than this, with a few good days
mixed in with the bad. So with great optimism (and a newly improved 7.5'
nasty weather PVC Loop) I'm looking forward to more Asian TP surprises,
along
with the typical rain and wind that pounds Puget Sound every November.

Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] What's up with KOTC-830 My 830?

2009-11-16 Thread Peter Baskind
I checked out KOTC while I was just driving.

It was running talk (Dennis Miller) and is still in Kennett. I don't know
what's up with the Memphis move.

It was My Talk 830.

What is up with KOTC 830, Kennett, MO?  Weren't they
 picking up and
 moving to Memphis?
 http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=151192.0

I heard classic rock on 830 and My-830 non-ID's, late
 Saturday
afternoon.  This is KOTC.  They are no longer SS,
 as stated in
Wikipedia.  Very nice classic rock songs!
 Monster signal but sub par
modulation.   Conversely KFUO on 850, also
from MO was putting out a
great signal AND sound.  Both are relogs but new to
 the ULR book.

[IRCA] sort of TA

2009-11-16 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Have heard brief audio (quite weak) on 1215 (the best, recognizably EE talk),
1269, 1575, and very briefly, 594, so far this evening. Very spotty though.

[IRCA] New MW Country

2009-11-16 Thread Jim Renfrew

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

Stuff up and down the band tonight, but takes some digging.

2100 EST819EGYPTGeneral Programme - flute (IS?), then woman with
news in Arabic. Flute again at 2108. Womasn introduces a man (Suleiman?)
who begins speaking. Parallel Delicast web audio for Radio Cairo. MW
Country #67. Those guys in Newfoundland must be sucking the signals out of
the ether in our direction! I've wanted this one for a long time.

Re: [IRCA] sort of TA

2009-11-16 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Similar results here. Checked out things after getting back from Lamont
and heard audio on the usual suspects (i.e. 1134 and 1215), with 675 and
855 bordering on audio, but just carriers elsewhere.

Last nights TA's from Lamont were much more interesting, if
short-lived. Checking the Perseus recording I found about a 4 minute
period of enhanced reception where I was getting middle-east type of
audio on 531, 981, 1098, as well as a good Spanish signal on 1107.
That's the only time those 4 signals were noted all night, and I would
have caught one, at best, without the Perseus. On the other hand 864
from Armenia was doing well for over half an hour, with no trace of the
usual France. We had 531 Faroes for a short while, 855 was Romania
early, with Spain later, and CRI via Finland on 963 would show up
occassionally. (Likely forgetting something as I'm going from memory,
not having unpacked my notes yet.)
