[IRCA] TPs in DC

2009-12-11 Thread Bill Whitacre
After TiVOing and listening live for TPs since the last 'window on Asia' back
on Nov. 19th, yesterday saw more than tempting, whispery, ghost-like vertical
traces running down the Perseus screen.

774kHz produced enough 'oomph' to give a little audio, albeit barely above
'imagination level' at ~0930utc:

http://realmonitor.com/stations/japan-774-091210-0927ut.wav

[female voice in what sure sounds like Japanese to me deep in the noise]

The pattern seems to have changed a bit in that the best signals are 'early',
shortly after Asian sunset rather than just before ECNA sunrise.

With that in mind, last night I set the Persues to record the whole band
starting at 0750utc [sunrise for Tokyo is about 0715utc or so]. Unfortunately,
I forgot to switch the antenna to 'North' and wasted the first hour or so until
I got up around 0840utc.

Since then I've been watching [listening?] to some decent traces on 774, 747,
828, 972, 945 and this morning's 'star' 873kHz.

Won't know if I have any audio 'til reviewing 'the tapes' but even 'chasing
traces' is fun!

Re: [IRCA] IRCA Digest, Vol 68, Issue 34

2009-12-11 Thread GORDON COOPER

Could some of the list members suggest a decent receiver in the Used market
for AM DX? I have a budget of ~350-400 dollars. I'm using an RP2100 and a
DE1103 with slinky antennas or a tunable loop at this time, and would like to
substantially upgrade, if that is realistic within my budget.

Thanks!

[IRCA] WAIS - 770 off

2009-12-11 Thread David Faulkner
Hi Group:

WAIS - 770, Buchtel (Nelsonville) Ohio noted off yesterday (12/10) and today
(12/11).  Repeated calls to the station yield only a busy signal.  The FM
(WSEO, 107.7) continues to operate w/its regular True Country format.  This
outage could be wind damage-related, but I've not heard anything about that
eiither.  They had been mixing cw oldies w/cookey conspiracy-theory syndicated
talk (Alex Jones) doing some local stuff--a mouth-off local talk show and

[IRCA] Radio flops of the decade just ended

2009-12-11 Thread Deane McIntyre

CNET just published what they consider the 30 biggest tech flops of
the decade just ending:

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-18438_7-10288870-82.html?tag=rtcol

Two of them are radio related: IBOC (HD) radio and satellite radio.

They also have a list of the 20 most innovative consumer electronics
of the decade:

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-18438_7-10413195-82.html?tag=mncol;posts

but sadly none of them are radio related, sure would have been different
if there had been a 1920's version of this list:)

Yes, except that, unless the DXer is Muslim, he does not know for a
fact that the Chanter is reciting from the Koran. It could simply be
a religious song - the equivalent of a Christian hymn.

I agree with Jim's comments on
chanting.  I prefer to describe it as male a capella
religious vocal music.   I know that's a bit
wordy but there's something patronizing about the term
chanting.  I've also seen words in DX News like
moaning, groaning, and wailing.   I know it
can sound that way at times but I think we should show a
little more respect for people from other cultures.

Anyway, Algeria-549 is definitely back on the air with
upgraded transmitting equipment.  Last Saturday 12/5 at
sunset they were one of the loudest and clearest TA's I've
heard in the past 40 years!

Thanks to Ben Dangerfield's tip, though I saw it much later
than his post,
there's Algeria on 549, definite parallel to Radio Algeria
1 on Delicast web
audio.  At 2304 EST / 0404z with a man doing the
Koranic recitation, what
some might mistakenly call chanting, it's simply the way
that the Koran is
read with a musical quality.  Suprisingly good, even
with 4.0 filter.  When
I hear this coming in so well I have to wonder where it's
been all this
time?  A new logging, and MW country #68.  I have
just a few more countries
to hear before I catch up to Ben (major understatement)

[IRCA] TP DX 11 Dec, Victoria

2009-12-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I believe there was some DX this AMbut, we're going out of town for the
next few days, and, a quick tune in at 1550UT on the way out the door yielded
signals on various of the regular channels. Nothing to get excited about
compared with even a few weeks ago, but compared with the last couple of days,
it sounded just fine

[IRCA] ULR DX....3 NEW STNS @ Sunset....including 1270 Oklahoma !!! John Bryant's Favourite Oldies Station!!!

2009-12-11 Thread Robert S.Ross VA3SW

Hi Guys:

A Great Night for SUNSET SKIP with the ULR's. 3 new Stations Bagged
and all of them relatively Low Power!! Included in the catches was a 5

Tulsaand most likely the Station that John Bryant does the Jive

Computer to see if they had a website so I could stream it..as I
didn't believe my ears at first. I heard a Nice CLEAR ID...but matching

I'm confused - I thought WGN stopped running IBOC completely about a

[IRCA] 1575-Radio Farda-- West Coast Ultralight Radio Audio MP3 (0158)

2009-12-11 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Dennis, Walt, and Others,

Radio Farda-1575 played hide-and -seek with my modified ULR, 7.5' tuned
passive loop and MP3 recorder in the frozen back yard for quite a while, but
finally peaked with Arabic pop music around 0158, providing the best
recording I've ever been able to make of this mega-TA station on a ULR.

Knowing very well that the East Coast DXers must be highly amused at our
excitement over this big gun TA, here is the recording on the modified
C.Crane SWP ultralight (7.5 Slider loopstick + CFJ455K5 IF filter),
inductively
coupled to an experimental 7.5' (side) PVC-frame tuned passive loop:

_http://www.mediafire.com/?jji22kjj0q1_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?jji22kjj0q1)

Dennis, I'm happy that you have an S9 signal on 1575-- you might also try
for 1134-Croatia, which also had decent audio here this evening on the ULR.

[IRCA] TAs in Alberta update

2009-12-11 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Just got back to the radio and had a run through the dial, noting the
following with audio:

531 weak audio, sounds like Algeria
549 2 unIDs. One sounds like Arabic talk
585 Spain
639 Spain
675 Holland, with presumed Libya in the background
684 Spain
693 UK
711 France
756 Germany
774 Spain
783 unID, with Arabic recitations, and a 2nd station behind
801 weak audio, but real tough in 800 spatter
810 could be a TA in the jumble, but the Winnipeg ethnic station
complicates things

837 weak audio in IBOC hash
855 Spain
864 France, mixing with presumed R.Liberty via Armenia
909 UK, perhaps the best I've heard this freq
936 unID, sounds like Arabic
972 Germany, with a second off channel carrier, presumably Libya
999 unID, was Russia earlier on
1017 Germany
1035 unID
1089 UK
1134 Croatia - not particularly strong
1152 very weak audio
1179 Sweden
1215 UK
1269 Germany, very nice signal
1296 weak traces of audio
1377 France
1386 traces of audio
1413 weak audio
1422 Germany
1431 weak audio
1449 Libya
1548 Kuwait (Sawa)
1575 UAE (Farda)

A very good showing - Nick sures picks the time to be away!

For the last 15 minutes have been receiving some weak audio on 675 kHz.
Around 0415 utc with music. From Nigel report looks like it might be Holland?
Hoping for a nice fade up on this signal.

Hello Dennis, Walt, and Others,

Radio Farda-1575 played hide-and -seek with my modified ULR, 7.5' tuned
passive loop and MP3 recorder in the frozen back yard for quite a while,
but

finally peaked with Arabic pop music around 0158, providing the best
recording I've ever been able to make of this mega-TA station on a ULR.

Dennis, I'm happy that you have an S9 signal on 1575-- you might also try
for 1134-Croatia, which also had decent audio here this evening on the
ULR.

Thanks Jim,

We do tend to get pretty excited here on the west coast when the common
TA's show up at good strength, which doesn't happen on too many days of the
year.

Maybe it's a little like the east coast DXers' challenge of receiving
common TP's like 747-JOIB and 774-JOUB, which seem even tougher to you guys
than our challenge of receiving the big gun TA's. As usual, the farther
north on the coastline the DXer lives, the easier it seems to be in both
situations.
