Re: [IRCA] 1710 kHz Pirate station in Portland, OR caught by FCC

2010-09-09 Thread vroomski

Patrick,

I paid $12.99 for the Talking House transmitter. The Goodwill store had 3 of
them.
When I plugged it into a ground-fault outlet, it tripped the breaker. It works
when pugged into a regular AC outlet. 4 ft wire for a antenna in our den,
I could hear it a house or two away on the Escape radio. On the bottom of the
transmitter it says that it complies with Part 15 of FCC rules of regulations.
Last time I visited the Goodwill store the other two were gone. One sold on
e-bay
last week for around $32.00.

Walt,

About 6 months ago I track a Russian station on 1710 kHz to a neighborhood near
164 th street
in Vancouver. Very expensive homes in this neighborhood. Have not heard this
station
this summer in my visits to the area. It seems that the Seattle area Russian
station on
1710 is still transmitting? In the Portland, OR area we have a Resident agent
office while
Seattle has a District office.

Presumably this is the Russian religious station?  The only thing that
surprises me is how long the FCC took to bust them.  There appears to be a
network of these Russian stations in the Pacific NW, all on 1710.  Wonder
whether the others have been, or will be busted as well?  .Walt

Pat,

The Seattle area Russian station on 1710 is just a level 3 carrier here.
I recently purchase a "Talking House" transmitter at Goodwill. It works
and allows up to 90 seconds of recording on the build in recorder.

kW tx in Novosibirsk, not on the air, while EiBi lists Tajikistan.  Anyone
sure?  I'm blown away with the number of Euro/Central Asian/African stations
which are heard on just about every frequency!  All this was recorded using a
QDFA array aimed due north (over the Pole to Europe).  Right next door on 1035
is the Estonian family station in Russian, but weaker, and more cochannels.

[IRCA] WQFA538 1670 TIS from Des Moines

2010-09-09 Thread neilkaz
It is always fun to catch TIS's by skip on the X-band channels ! Last night
during what were mundane cx for distant skip, I noted this IA DOT TIS at times
coming thru WTDY and the QRM behind it with Des Moines area interstate traffic
info. I-35,I-80, and I-235 mentioned. Relog but the clearest that I've heard
this and a good example of BOG directivity since Des Moines is west and pesky
WTDY 100 times stronger and lots closer to the NW. Last season I had the two
eastern IA TIS's on 1680 also, but they weren't in last night, if they still
are on.

[IRCA] WHYP RADIO 1370 Khz.....Rides Again!!....A Relog of a Classic Callsign from years gone by!!

2010-09-09 Thread Robert S.Ross VA3SW

Hi Guys:

Anyone from the Lake Erie area of the Great Lakes, who was DX'ing in
the Late 70's/Early 80's should remember WHYP RADIO (Whip Radio) which
was located in a small town called "NORTH EAST, PA". This station was a
MOM and POP run station, Daytime Only on 1530 AM and 100.9 FM. James
Brownyard and his Wife were head cook and bottle washer for the station
which had a VERY LOCAL Flavour. James would play OLD COUNTRY Records and
read the News from the Newspaper (You could hear the Paper rustling in
the background)!! Sometimes he would put an Album onand go cut the
Grass, leaving the record to skip for 20 Minutes while he was gone!! It
was Classic!! He would look out the window and give the Local Weather
Report and crazy stuff like that. After James moved on...the AM and FM
outlets were sold to othersThe FM became "ROCKET 101 (100.9) from
ERIE, PA., Playing Classic Rock and the AM Outlet is still on the Air on
1530 Khz as WYNE from NORTH EAST, PA. , Playing Oldies. The Old WHYP
CALLSIGN has been Dead for some time til just a few weeks ago when a
CORRY, PA. station picked it up. WWCB in Corry, traded their Call in for
the Classic WHYP and is now transmitting as such with an Oldies/Classic
Rock type format. They are calling themselves "COOL 1370", and I have
read that they picked "WHYP" as a callsign for it's local history and to
honour the late Mr. Brownyard. WHYP RADIO was of course also honoured by
a SHORT WAVE PIRATE station using those same calls some years ago!! I
feel quite honoured to have Logged all 3 of the original WHYP's!!! AM,
FM, and SHORTWAVE PIRATE!! Last night I finally heard the Re-Incarnation
of WHYP on 1370 to complete the Saga!! It's a RELOG of the EX-WWCB from
Corry, PA...but significant enough to spawn this little story!! If
you're in the Great Lakes Areagive a listen on 1370 for the New
WHYP...it's not too powerful...but it may get out a ways at Sunset Skip!!

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-9

2010-09-09 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

Asiatic TP conditions here were about the same as yesterday in this
DU-dead zone, so it seems that I escaped the downturn noted by Steve and
Nigel.
The best audio of the new season was heard from 648-Voice of Russia (which
only started to show up yesterday) and 738-BEL2 in Taiwan, both of which
provided fairly good recordings around 1315. 1134-CNR1 had a vibrant signal
during a classical music program just before the sunrise enhancement
collapsed here (around 1335). Dennis is receiving some TP's that aren't
coming
here (and vice versa), but in general the TP propagation to Puyallup seems
similar to that of Salmon Creek.

The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5" loopstick)
inductively coupled to a 7.5' sided PVC tuned passive loop in the back yard:

594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Weak to fair NHK1 Japanese audio at 1307
648 VOR Razdolnoye, Russia Good signal with YL speech during Mandarin
Chinese
program at 1314
_http://www.mediafire.com/?uxir638r98g4lp5_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?uxir638r98g4lp5)
657 Pyongyang, N. Korea Fair-good angry Korean during sunrise
enhancement
666 JOBK Osaka, Japan Fair Japanese audio in and out around 1310
738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan Good Mandarin Chinese YL signal during pop music
program around 1317
_http://www.mediafire.com/?3qa45nceyakdiou_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?3qa45nceyakdiou)
747 JOIB Sapporo, Japan Fair to good Japanese speech in KXL splatter,
1309
828 JOBB Osaka, Japan Fair NHK2 program for most of sunrise enhancement
936 China (presumed) Threshold audio only around 1311; faded fast
972 HLCA Dangjin, S. Korea Fair Korean speech at 1322, weaker than
yesterday
1053 Korean Jammer Buzzing along nicely at 1324 over weak UnID co-channel
1134 JOQR Tokyo, Japan Weakly on frequency at 1259, then yielded to CNR1
1134 CNR1 Golmud, China Chinese up and down in strength at 1329, but
great signal
 during classical music program
_http://www.mediafire.com/?746iq21291kh54x_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?746iq21291kh54x)
1566 HLAZ Jeju, S. Korea Strong signals during Japanese religious
program, 1320
1575 VOA Ban Rassom, Thailand Weak-fair Asiatic language audio in and
out after 1300

73 and Good DX,

[IRCA] TP for 9 Sep from Victoria, BC

2010-09-09 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I now have a somewhat larger corner fed antenna up ("Superloop"), but still
just mostly the "regulars"; might have had Taiwan on 1143 however. Overall
signal strengths were better during my listening from 1250 to 1305 and from
1325 to 1335UT, but even then, a little preamplification didn't hurt.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

1566 HLAZ

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

774 JOUB
1287 JOHR, JJ talk at 1328UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be
understood by a native speaker

594 JOAK
747 JOIB
828 JOBB
972 HLCA
1143 Taiwan? talk was rather murky though fairly strong; will need to listen
to the recording

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

873 JOGB //774

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

1053 (still can't drag audio out of this), 1098, 1242, 1475

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] This morning's DU chase from IL

2010-09-09 Thread neilkaz
This morning seemed clearly worse than yesterday, however, I got to the set a
bit late at 1124. Only very weak carriers on 612,702,and 738 noted.

Last evening's cx towards the west were quite poor as well execpt for shorter
skip like IA and Omaha. KOA was reasonable but not overpowering like it can be.
At 2145 CDT when I came in, I still couldn't get CBW well, and there'd been no
trace of MT,AB or WA.

All low band with any audio today, though hets all over the whole band.
Highly variable with snippets of audio for short periods. All DU except for
one snippet that had both DU and JJ on 594. 738 poor/weak DU talk; 774
briefly weak DU talk; 549 poor/weak DU talk. All 1320-1330 utc. My usual 891
was very poor today. All signals gone earlier than usual.

2010-09-09 Thread Nigel Pimblett
What DU/TPs is all I can ask today.Yesterday's TP audio was
completely lacking today, and nothing DU rose up to take it's place. A
fair number of carriers, all seemingly of DU origin, but nothing that
reached audio. Definitely the low point for the month thus far.

Astronomers have long used the same technique (black stars on a white
backgrounhd) when visually scanning photographic plates looking for
faint nebulas, comet tails etc. It's highly effective I feel.

Re: [IRCA] This morning's DU chase from IL

2010-09-09 Thread Bill Whitacre
I can't compete with Kaz BOGs this far east but yesterday morning was one of
the best for my long-standing daily attempt to get audio out of 738 -- right at
sunrise too.

After seeing Neil's email I went back through the Perseus recording at the time
738 was best -- around 1035utc -- and found 'traces', some VERY weak, on:

702
738
819
846
1512
1548

I use Guy Atkin's suggested 'reverse x-ray' palette to aid in 'seeing'
potential signals.

Screen shots of the above are here:

None of these produced any audio. 738 was closest and in USB or LSB one can
tell there is modulation but not that it's male or female voice or what
language is being spoken. :-(

Someday though ...
