[IRCA] Japanese hets likely, plus BC SA MO > ON

2010-10-01 Thread Saul DX
Not a peep out of SK 540 on the loopstick-modified Tecsun 380 early-warning
system when the alarm sounded at 0615 EDT, nor at 0640 when I decided I
wouldn't fall back asleep. I moved up the dial to see what else there was,
and had strong music on 950. Decided to check the main rig. On the
north-south and also the se/nw wires at 0650 I had slight hets on 693, 747
and 774 - all Japanese big guns. Nowhere near audio, but enough to realize
cx are way up. One mopre weak het on 873 (can't remember offhand what's
there), and I stick with the nw/se BOG wire, which I installed last week and
find is good for the Cdn Prairies and such, I noted nothing but Windsor ON
on 540. So the moderately-strong Brit accent on 690, with talk of Canada,
caught be offguard. Given the JJ hets and the content on 690 - which I
presume to be its overnight shortwave service - I can only suspect
Vancouver. No sign of activity on 1130 or 890 from BC (though I had country
on 1130 (LA maybe) and did get country later on 890 (ND likely by then as SK
was getting strong).

From there...

0701 630 - CFCO ON strong, but distinct second station IDs as KJSL, and
taped. That's St. Louis, and new.

BC fades on 690 replaced by French (SK) and 540 yields what I presume is a
weak SK. 730 yields a CKDM (MB) ID at 0713.

At 0714 I tape brief very weak talk between country songs on 1190. Hoping
for Weyburn.

Something about the Moose population in the Empire State on 790. I guess we
won't be hearing Alberta...

At 0717 strong country but no ID on 1190. Various unId calls on 790 I'm
checking.

Then at 0721 An "AM 1190 Community Calendar" announcement similar to when I
heard Weyburn at Newfoundland the past couple years. Several references to
Weyburn and back to country music, and a long-time target here has been
nailed.

Signals fade and I pull the wires off the dirt road (which they cross) for
the day, so no one walking by trips on them.

I'll put the east and se/nw wires out one last time this trip for SSS and
then head back to the city later this evening.

A couple of the Newfoundland DXpeditions reported Argentina on this

The only Disney AMs directly affected by last night's shutdown are
WDDZ-550-RI, WBWL-600-FL, WDRD-680-KY and WDZK-1550-CT. WDRD is
reportedly still on the air with ESPN sports, while the other three are
silent.

But...there's also a change coming in Pittsburgh. ESPN will disappear
from WEAE-1250-PA at the end of December, with Radio Disney replacing
it. That means WWCS-540 gets a new format, as yet undetermined.

Conditions were good, but not great. All of the ID'ed stations here were
relogs. Two unids of note:

At 2014 on 940, I had somebody running Savage - they disappeared soon
thereafter. Suspect needed WCSW in WI, but they don't seem to have a website
(WMAC also carries Savage, but not at that time).

At 2026 on 860, I had oldies (e.g., Maria Muldaur, Midnight at the Oasis)
along with another station that I'm pretty sure was unn. KKOW. Both seemed
to disappear around 2030. Several candidates for this one... any ideas?

Hey Dennis/all:

Up here near Seattle, things were actually decent.
Starting at 1310 UTC, 558 and 603 finally paralleled
nicely, confirming Korea's KBS2 network: 558 was
particularly strong. 693-Japan was at barefoot
armchair level on my Tecsun PL-310 for a while -
amazing, since 690-Vancouver is no slouch here.

As for above 1000 khz, it was dead except for 1566
until about 15 minutes before sunrise (LSR is ~1405),
when the lower band died and the upper band sprang to
life. Decent audio on 1134, 1422, and 1503 (//594,
so NHK-1) among others. Hets on most of the
channels. At about 1410 things plummeted dramatically.

[IRCA] TP DX 10-1-10 in Seattle

2010-10-01 Thread Bruce Portzer

I listened today for the first time in a couple of days. The band weren't all
that impressive when I started at 1220 UT, and stayed uimpressive until I
headed for the shower at 1310.

I rechecked the band again at 1330, and found the low end of the dial to be
pretty good.  By then, the strongest TP was JOAB-693 booming in with English
lessons.  594 648 657 747 and 774 were also good at times, and audio was noted
on several other channels.  There wasn't much above 850, except for the Koreans
on 972 1053 and 1566.

Things were still going strong when I left for work at 1345, so the SDR may
have captured some additional stations.

Here;s what was bagged today:

Good audio, even if only for brief periods
594 JOAK
648 Russia
657 North Korea
693 JOAB
747 JOIB
774 JOUB (briefly)
1566 HLAZ

Fair audio
567 JOIK //594 (with heavy KVI-570 splatter)
558 S Korea
972 S Korea (with a second station in the background 1341)
1053 S Korea (jammer)

Weak audio
603 S Korea // 558, mixing with another station
738 Chinese talk, presumed Taiwan
756 China

Carriers, some with audio traces

Perhaps Owosso MI given for format? Was WOAP looking at a site or some other

[IRCA] Russian's move to 1010 kHz KOOR

2010-10-01 Thread vroomski

KOOR 1010 kHz is now carrying Russian programming. Portland PDX
forum has a posting on August 24, 2010 mentioning hearing
Russian on KOOR 1010. I'm listening to the Russian program now at
9:43 AM PST. A fellow on the list suggested that with Bustos Media
financial situation the Russian group was probably able to get a good
deal on airtime. Wonder if they still have "Little Saigon Radio" on
weekends?

[IRCA] MW DX from Enid, OK, Sept 24-Oct 1, 2010

2010-10-01 Thread Glenn Hauser
** JAPAN [and non]. John Wilkins` capture in Colorado before sunrise of NHK on
MW 774 prompted me to try for this one again, as last year it also made it to
OK. Sept 25 at 1152 UT I do detect a carrier on 774 from the NW, which is
surely JOUB, Akita-2, 500 kW.

Close to KSPI Stillwater OK, with its spurs on 774 and 786, we have to
be careful! But the Sept sign-on for this daytimer is 1215 UT and it
has no PSSA, per NRC AM Log; in October it will be *1230. [corrected below]

On the DX-398 set to 9 kHz, I stepped thru the entire MW band with BFO
on and could only detect one other TP carrier, on 1098, which everyone
assumes is V7AB, Majuro, MARSHALL ISLANDS, 25 kW, leaving its carrier
on all-night after 1130 sign-off (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1098, only carrier on a trans-Pacific/Region 3 frequency
I could detect in a complete MW bandscan, Sept 27 around 1235, close
to local sunrise. Looped from the NW on the DX-398, presumably
Marshall Islands. Need to do this a semihour earlier, or much earlier
for them to be outputting any audio (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. Oct 1 from 1156 UT started a MW bandscan with the DX398 indoors,
only built-in ferrite bar antenna but with AC, set on 9 kHz steps, with BFO
slightly off-tuned, to detect trans-Pacific carriers, and found a lot of them
but none strong enough for modulation, in the order logged until 1205: 828,
747, 594, 567, 558, 693, 855- (off-frequency to lo side, so North Korea), 873,
891, 1053, 1098, 1134, 1242, 558; weakening by 1212. I expect many of them were
superpower NHK outlets. See also OKLAHOMA: KSPI (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. Correxions necessary re my previous remarx about KSPI 780
Stillwater. Tho a daytimer, October official sunrise being 1230 UT, it was
already on at 1209 Oct 1 with ONN newscast, mixing with a Mexican but not WBBM.
NRC AM Log says it has no PSSA, which in a Sept 25 log under JAPAN, I mistook
for PSRA: KSPI cannot stay on post-sunset, but obviously it can sign on
pre-sunrise, probably at 6 am = 1100 UT. (It is impossible to nail down which
stations have PSRA and which do not since FCC has disposed of its records of
such authorizations!) FYI, official KSPI sunsets in UT are: Oct , Nov & Dec
2315, Jan 2330, Feb 0015.

Furthermore, I said in that log and in previous ones dated Aug 7 and March 17,
that KSPI`s spurs are on 774 and 786 kHz, i.e. 6 kHz above and below. But they
are really on 776 and 784, i.e. 4 kHz above and below, as I originally reported
on Feb 8! So there is no problem confusing the lower one with NHK on 774, on a
1-kHz-step tuner.

I was confused because I often hear these on the 10-kHz step caradio, where
they also put 6-kHz, not 4-kHz hets on weak 770 and 790 signals, and it`s broad
enough to audiblize them. Of course, these spurs, wherever they are, need to be
eliminated. I wonder if anyone can get them beyond my groundwave range from
this 250-watter (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MEXICO. After surveying TP carriers Oct 1, see UNIDENTIFIED, I switched the
DX398 to 10 kHz steps and went after Mexicans. Still indoors, on AC, but only
with built-in ferrite antenna, easy to null QRM if necessary. Local sunrise is
1227 UT.

650, at 1219, string of government PSAs starting with Pro-Víctima, 800 number
to call, from the National Human Rights Commission, mixed with some
commercials, 1222 ID as ``W [doble-u] Radio, Radio 65`` including old XEW
chimes, and again a few sex later. WRTH 2010 has R. 65 slogan for XETNT, Los
Mochis, Sinaloa, 5/1 kW, but no mention of W. Cantú confirms W/Radio 65 for
XETNT: http://mexicoradiotv.com/listsina.htm

710, at 1216, about 5 TCs by live DJ for 6:16 am, so no doubt it`s in CST/MDT
zone, finally slogan as ``La Ranchera de Cuauhtémoc``, i.e. XEDP in town of
that name, Chihuahua, 7 kW day and 100 watts nite, no doubt already on day
power.

770, at 1225, right after 650 log, a 6:25 [MDT] TC, ``Los 40 Principales desde
Los Mochis, Sinaloa``, IFE PSA. So XEREV from same city, 1/0.1 kW says WRTH. It
takes the SS eight syllables to say what we convey in three: Top 40.

870, had to try for this one after the above logs: at 1228 going from Spanish
to native language, 1229 ID by YL in passing as XETAR, music, rooster crowing.

It`s the Tarahumara station in Guachochi, Chihua2, La Voz de la Sierra
Tarahumara, 10 kW daytimer 6 am-6 pm CST per illustrated:
http://www.cdi.gob.mx/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=872:xetar-la-voz-de-la-sierra-tarahumara-&catid=35&Itemid=200018
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

and some earlier logs, which I hope I have not posted here before:

** U S A. Unusually tuning across MW on a Saturday evening, UT Sept 26
at 0339, surprised to hear something other than talk on KMOX 1120:
``Laura``, and soon break by DJ in ``Johnny Rabbitt`s Route 66 on
KMOX``. Also mentioned the KMOX Wax Museum; more oldies,

Dennis,

Signed on? Apparently they are off after LSS as I have not noticed them.
I did get an unid SSer Monday night under CKWX, which I thought may have
been KWPX, but it may have been someone else. But as it gets closer to
Winter, I have an idea the QRM will be worse around the Frasier Valley
earlier in the day and later in the morning, with BC being farther North
and more darkness sets in.

I heard Russian on 1010 with no TOH ID (other than in Russian) on yesterday
morning's Perseus recording. Figured it had to be a KOOR format change. Thanks
for confirming.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-1

2010-10-01 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

Low band TP propagation was excellent again this morning, although
like others I noticed that the high band Asiatic signals were down somewhat
in strength (compared to yesterday). Almost every 9 kHz low band channel had
some type of audio this morning, and it was a challenge to investigate all
of them. 612-JOLK was received for an all-time new TP logging (// 594),
and there was a three- TP mix on 603 kHz containing another apparent NHK1
parallel to 594, which was presumed to be JOOG in Obihiro (although the jumble
with HLSA and the Chinese station was too dicey to be 100% certain). This
apparent 603 kHz NHK1 parallel also showed up last November under HLSA
here, but faded out before a definite match could be made with 594-JOAK.
The UnID Chinese on 621 kHz had fairly good signals for the first
time this season, with no sign of the NK station. All the low band Asian "best
bets" (639, 648, 657, 666, and 675) had good audio at times, and the
middle band Chinese stations on 918, 927, 936 and 945 kHz stuck around with
weak
audio for most of the morning, right up until 1410. 738-BEL2 was back at
full strength, but with the obnoxious buzzing signal again. It's a puzzle
how an advanced, wealthy country like Taiwan can't seem to correct this
infamous signal on one of its major AM broadcasters.

The following were received on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5"
loopstick) inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive loop (in the
back
yard):

558 TP-Mix Fair HLQH Korean music mixing with JOCR talk, 1312
585 JOPG Kushiro, Japan Fair Japanese talk program, 1315
594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Strong Japanese conversation, 1316
603 TP-Mix Fair maze of HLSA, the UNID Chinese, and a talk station
in Japanese seemingly // 594 (but too jumbled to be sure), 1355
612 JOLK Fukuoka, Japan Fair-good Japanese news at 1401 // 594,

693 JOAB Tokyo, Japan Unusually strong this morning u/ CBU slop
702 Korean Central BS The ragged, off-frequency North Korean was
back with ancient music under two-way splatter, 1353
729 JOCK Nagoya, Japan Nice NHK1 sig under CHMJ splatter 1359
738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan Strong, obnoxious signal with Chinese pop
music at 1331; weak HLKG co-channel with Korean talk
747 JOIB Sapporo, Japan Very strong with Japanese news, 1404
756 CNR1 China Synchros Fair-good Chinese in KXL splatter, 1340
774 JOUB Akita, Japan Strong signals in stronger KTTH splatter, 1355
828 JOBB Osaka, Japan Radio English program at good strength 1333
891 JOHK Sendai, Japan Fair Japanese conversation at 1326, // 594

1035 China (presumed) Chinese speech and music fair-good at 1356
1044 CRI Jiangsu, China Japanese program at fair strength at 1405
1053 Korean Jammer Not especially vibrant this morning, but all alone
1134 TP-Mix Weak mix this morning of the usual JOQR-KBS-CNR1
1566 HLAZ Jeju, S. Korea Japanese religious program fair at 1311
1575 VOA Ban Rassom, Thailand Weak-fair Asiatic language 1310

[IRCA] New TA logging

2010-10-01 Thread Jim Renfrew

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

1134COPESPAINSynchros, with Spanish talk, jazz interlude, then
more talk with two men and a woman. The jazz was what matched the signal
with the Delicast web audio. New, made possible by the absence of Croatia.
I suspect this will quickly become a pest!

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 1 Oct 2010

2010-10-01 Thread Nigel Pimblett
A pretty good morning here in southern Alberta. Most of the audio
action was from Japan, with a number of the second tier stations joining
the usual NHK big guns. Audio noted from the following:

567 Japan
594 Japan
666 Japan
693 Japan
738 unID
747 Japan (great signal, the best of all)
774 Japan
828 Japan
837 Japan
873 Japan
891 Japan
1161 uniD (just traces of audio)
1188 Japan (//594)
1269 unID
1422 Japan
1475 Malaysia (presumed with very weak audio on a big carrier)
1557 Taiwan, Family Radio
1566 S.Korea, HLAZ
1575 Thailand, VOA

This was in the 1300-1330 time period. My newest DX aid, a 6 day old
daughter, also had me up at 1100, when I noted a number of the big
Japanese stations in quite nicely, especially 747 khz.

Re: [IRCA] New TA logging

2010-10-01 Thread Nigel Pimblett
The same station noted tonight here in southern Alberta. As Jim
comments, likely to be regarded as a pest before long!Quite a bit of
TA audio here tonight, mostly from Spain.

585 Spain
684 Spain
693 UK
855 Spain
963 presumed CRI via Finland
1035 unID, sounds more like Portugal than Estonia
1062 Denmark
1089 UK
1107 Spain
1134 Spain
1179 Sweden
1215 UK
1269 Germany
1305 Spain
1377 France
1422 Germany

Quite a number of others at that "almost audio" level too.

Nigel Pimblett
