Re: [IRCA] Brazil DX

2011-07-20 Thread Stephen Airy
So what would be some other Brazil (especially São Paulo) big guns I should try
for?  As for frequencies already mentioned, I have local to semi-local
groundwave receivable on 740, 1090 & 1110 (straddling 1100), 1210 (next to
1220) and 1000.

I should mention I'm near San Diego, CA, so Mexico will definitely have some
pests in the way.  Considering that, what would be my best bets with the PL-606
(or SRF-59) and Select-A-Tenna?

2011-07-20 Thread Patrick Martin
I noticed around 0300 EDT this morning that KKXA had boosted up their
modulation tearing up KGDD at times here on the coast. Infact there was
no way to get either KKXA or KGDD clear enough to listen to either QRM
free. So it looks like with the addition of KKXA, 1520 is going to be a
jumble especially with OK City added to the mix.

[IRCA] South America on MW

2011-07-20 Thread Rick Dau
And Brazil on mediumwave here would be a pipedream for me.

Back around December 1994, there were lots of reports of Colombians making it
up
to the U.S. easily, and I'm guessing there must have been a peak of the sunspot
cycle around that time.  From Iowa City, I logged HJAJ-760, HJJX-770, and
HJAQ-1000 during that time.  I'm just curious if any other landlocked DXers
have
gotten anything exotic on MW from South America since then.

[IRCA] MW stations on Guam

2011-07-20 Thread Doug Martin
Hi. Unfortunately, I can't read the pdf version of the Pacific Asian log, and
have so far not been able to get it in .txt or .rtf or .doc formats. I'm
blind, and my screen reader does not handle pdf's well.
Anyway, has anyone dx'ed from Guam? Are their any other stations besides KWAM,
KGUM, and KTWG? Also, what would a night time band scan bring up on a regular
basis? Mostly Philippines and China? What about other Pacific islands? I
lived in Hawaii 9 years, but was never able to log anything from Guam.
Probably my best catches were: Thailand on 1575, Philippines on 1134, WXLG-1224
in the Martial Islands, Kuwait--BBC on 1413, and WNAX from South Dakota. I
logged lots of 50kw stations from the east coast as well. But nothing from
Guam.
Finally, if anyone knows how I can get a text file of Bruce's PAL, please let
me know.

monitoring a possible repeat of the extraordinary daytime MW DX opening two
years ago in April, when an STS landing occurred in the morning well after
sunrise all the way across the CONUS --- our theory being that passing thru the
ionosphere near us disrupted the D-layer normally blocking propagation via the
higher E-layer, which funxions at night for distant `skywave` propagation (or
somehow enhancing the E-layer itself), producing night-like daytime reception
in OK of MW stations in CO, WY, NE, SD and ND.

The final STS 135 mission schedule at
http://www.nasa.gov/tvschedule/pdf/tvsked_revi.pdf
shows as of July 20:

orb event MET CDT EDTUTC
197 DEORBIT PREPARATIONS BEGIN 12/ 13:25 11:54 PM 12:54 AM 04:54

THURSDAY JULY 21:
198 PAYLOAD BAY DOOR CLOSING 12/ 14:45 01:14 AM 02:14 AM 06:14
200 ATLANTIS DEORBIT BURN 12/ 17:25 03:54 AM 04:54 AM 08:54
200 MILA C-BAND RADAR ACQUISITION OF ATLANTIS
   12/ 18:16 04:45 AM 05:45 AM 09:45
200 KSC LANDING KSC12/ 18:29 04:58 AM 05:58 AM 09:58

This means that like several previous ones, landing path will be in the dark
before sunrise, so any such effects would be obscured with MW propagation in
nighttime mode anyway.

This page shows landing paths:
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/sts135/news/landing.html
coming in over Central America and/or Mexico in the night. If delayed one
orbit, coming in from further up over Mexico, but not USA. If further delays
should be necessary or even a change in landing site to CA or NM, because of
ground weather, all this will be different. So as usual, keep alert for any
changes in the original plans (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

Re: [IRCA] Brazil DX

2011-07-20 Thread Jim Renfrew
Radio Tupi 1280 is very reliable in Newfoundland, but I suppose not anywhere
around Montreal! Some of the stations from Brazil's northeast might make
it, like 740 and 880.

The only Brazilian I've heard in western New York is 1100, and that was when
WTAM was off the air for an hour or so in the middle of the night.

Subject: [IRCA] Brazil DX

I always get excited when I can hear at least, some of the Brazilians
big guns around mid-Summer. Here's a sample from last night where I
could hear São Paulo's ZYK694, Radio Globo on 1100 KHz after phasing out
semi-local WTAM, Cleveland. Distance is 8200 Km / 5095 Miles:

With the exception of ZYJ458 1220 (R.Globo, Rio de Janeiro) and ZYK522
1000 (R.Record, São Paulo), I wonder if there are other fairly
"reachable" Brazilian dx targets from the North East?
