[IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/1/13

2013-10-01 Thread richa...@perryisp.net
A better morning for hearing TP signals here (LSR at 1226).

567 JOIK, Sapporo J, poor JJ talk at 1211-1213.
594 JOAK, Tokyo J, poor // JOIK at 1214-1216. Reception blocked here by local
RFI.
747 JOIB, Sapporo J, fading in and out at 1034-1211, occasionally at fair
strength in WSB 750 QRM.
774 JOUB, Akita J, heard fading in and out at 1014-1205. EE lesson ending at
1029 with good-bye. Audible at fair strength on barefoot PL-310 at
1149-1152.
This is the most frequently heard transoceanic station here.
972 HLCA(?), strong het, no audio, at 1219-1225, QRM from KCFO 970.
1053 ROK Jammer, fair signal at 1225.

Receiver: PL-310 with Quantum QX Loop.

Good DX.

Thanks, Chuck. Still, it's possible there would be some of the articulation
described.

If I could have DXed all night long as a teenager and been allowed to skip
school more often, I might have done better ;-)

High school lessons to 1130 and then cultural classes like cooking to
 1200.

Why pay for adult education classes? Just DX!

  Hi Tim,

I appreciate the comments regarding my first reception of
  presumed

  Japan

on 747 on Sunday morning. I've posted a longer recording to
  Youtube,
actually a recording of the SDR capture. The video begins using a

Thanks for posting the longer recording of your 747 kHz TP
  reception on

  YouTube.

I've listened to the recording with headphones, as recommended.
  At 4:16

into the video the male speaker uses a phrase which pretty much
  indicates
that the language is Japanese (ano... dookaku no) which roughly
translates as no matter what... in English. He is using more
  intonation
than what is commonly used in the monotone-styled Japanese
  language, but
this is possibly an attempt to make the speech more interesting for a
  radio
listener. My own opinion is that the speech is Japanese, although
  other
TP-DXers may have further comments (especially in how the program
  matches
up to the NHK2 archives). BTW, I lived in Japan as a high school brat
  (1967-69).

2013-10-01 Thread Michael Yule
Hi everyone - a fun session today, with some stations I haven't heard
previously, and others that were stronger than I had heard them before.

Can someone let me know what the most likely CC speaking station is that I was
hearing under 774 JOUB at 13:23 this morning? I suspect Wuhan, only because it
has the most powerful transmitter. I have an mp3 if anyone wants to listen to
it - I don't think I can post it here and will need to set up a platform like
Gary has so that I can share these things. I also recorded a very solid TOH ID
for 963 CRI R Kitaja in CC and RR at 1400.

I also have an mp3 of an unid CC speaking station on 702 from 1407 to about
1409 - heavy splatter but I'd be interested if anyone might have a guess what
this one is.

Thanks!

Michael -

From Grayland, Wuhei is sometimes heard on 774 and seems like the best
candidate. I remember that in October it can be quite clear after NHK
signs off.

As for 702 TP's, I don't know. That's a Japan North Korea frequency
for me.

Michael, I would be very interested in hearing the recordings that you made

and to offer my suggestions (although without the expert experience of Chuck,

[IRCA] TP DX for Tuesday October 1

2013-10-01 Thread Bruce Portzer
Conditions here were down a bit from yesterday. There were quite a few
stations to be heard, but the big guns were weaker than normal, and the
rest were mostly near their normal signal strength.

603 continues to amaze me for its total lack of audio here. Gary for
some reason keeps getting amazing receptions there like the one he
posted this morning, but I seldom hear more than a carrier. Oddly
enough, the carrier is about as strong as JOAK-594 many mornings; but it
just doesn't produce anything.

On the other hand, the 819 North Korean managed to slip past KGNW today
with a few minutes of reasonably good audio. I may have also gotten
audio on 1089 next to my 50kw local, but it may have been my
imagination. The mystery 891 Chinese station was back again, but it was
way too weak to offer clues about its identity, except possibly the time
pips at 1400.

A few Alaskans were heard as well, including both Nome stations.

Good
747JOIB, CC lessons 1338, seemed to be repeating basic one syllable
sounds rather than having actual conversations

750KFQD, atop for a few minutes 1323 w/local news and IDs
981CNR1 CC woman at decent level 1334. Still there 1400 with time
pips, TC and ID

Fair
567JOIK, 3+1 pips 1300, mw //594 1309
594JOAK, 1300-1400, signal below normal, fair at best today
640KYUK?, unintelligible anmt 1300, then start of NPR news
670KDLG? BBC nx o/u KBOI 1304, too weak to hear ID at 1300
693JOAB, weather report 1303
774JOUB, weaker than normal today, best at 1332 w/CC lesson //747
819DPRK, strident talk cutting through KGNW-820 splatter 1320, then
fem vocal music.
850KICY, Christian song, 1300 woman:serving Hooper Bay, Little
Diomede and all of Western Alaska, this is KICY Nome mixing w/KHHO
890KBBI, woman w/legal ID for KBBI an FM in Kenai-Soldotna, then
marine weather 1400 after CJDC mostly faded out
945CNR1, one set of pips at 1300, then another set ending at
1300:10. CC talk, then standard ID 1300:45. KJR was being relatively
mellow at the time.

963CRI, RR talk 1340, still there 1400 w/IS and usual trumpet fanfare
972KBS not its usual self today, noticeably weaker than normal, best
at 1312 with woman in KK
1017CRI, usual opening w/IS, fanfare, IDs in CC KK, then what
sounded like news in KK

1053jammer
1566HLAZ down noticeably today, JJ talk 1314
1575VOA, in briefly w/mw in Vietnamese, ments of Washington
United States, otherwise just weak audio or a carrier

Poor
585JOPG, bits of talk, 3+1 pips 1300
639CNR1, CC talk and BoH time signal in KCIS splash 1330
648CC talk in domestic splash 1335
657DPRK time pips bits of talk 1300 in domestic splash
666JOBK time pips 1300

780KNOM, partial ID ..in Nome.. u/KKOH 1300
828JOBB CC lessons 1338
837excited CC talk 1406
891CC talk 1340. 5+1 pips, all the same pitch 1400, mixing with
faint CC talk. Probably all from the same stn but not sure.
1035CNR1 CC talk 1359, pips at ToH, more talk, all rather weak. 3
carriers visible on SDR display
1089carrier poking well above 1090 splatter today. Possibly some
audio (talk) 1341, although I can't totally rule out wishful thinking
1170Partial KBS pips u/KPUG 1300, then another set of pips ending
1300:20 at least two short ones and a higher pitched long one. The
latter was likely from China.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-1 (Conclusion)

2013-10-01 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Thanks again to Michael Yule for his very interesting TP report this morning
from Lions Bay, BC. Like Michael I had a fun session this morning, with two
Chinese low-band stations exceptionally strong. Both 603-China (Hulun Buir?)
and the 639-CNR1 synchros produced their strongest audio ever heard here, with
the PL-380's S/N display being briefly pegged on 603 at 1314 (Chinese
male-female conversation) and on 639 at 1308 (fast-paced news by male and
female Chinese announcers). 603-HLSA was also at a fairly strong level
throughout the session, resulting in a wild mix with 603-China at times. The
Japanese and Korean big guns on 594, 747, 774, 828, 972, 1053 and 1134 (KBS)
seemed to be about as strong as yesterday, with very good audio, in and out.

After receiving the exceptional low band signals from China early in the
session I was looking for some more strong Chinese domestic station audio on
756, 918, 927, 936, 945, 981 and 1035, but apparently the unusual propagation
was limited to the low band. The other Chinese domestic stations were only fair
at best, with 936 (Anhui) and 981-CNR1 the best of the bunch around 1345. Like
Michael I had only one frequency to choose at a time, so for a 1400 TOH
recording I concentrated on 738-BEL2, and missed Michael's fine signal from
963-CRI at the time. 738-BEL2' s signal strength was down a little at 1400 but
the splatter from 740-KCBS was gone, so I was able to record a fairly decent
TOH signal from Taiwan.

As for Michael's other signals I did have pretty strong audio from 603-HLSA
around 1332, playing an apparent Korean singer-covered version of the old
Rolling Stones' Hit I Can't Get No Satisfaction. With the Chinese co-channel
pestering HLSA all session long, maybe the song's title was perfect for the
situation? Overall it was a very exciting session, and hopefully an indication
of great Asian conditions in store for October.

603 China (Hulun Buir?) Best signals ever heard here at 1314, with strong
female-male Chinese conversation pegging the PL-380 S/N readout

http://www.mediafire.com/listen/dd3n2qmdo8242tb/603-China-1314z100113PL380.MP3

603 HLSA Namyang, S. Korea Temporarily dominant over a pesky China
at 1333 with a Korean remake of the Stones' hit Satisfaction

http://www.mediafire.com/listen/ez385uuzsed6ndn/603-HLSA-1333z100113PL380.MP3

639 CNR1 China Synchros Best signals ever heard here at 1308, with fast-
paced news by male and female Chinese announcers pegging the
 PL-380's S/N readout (recorded on 638 because of a strong 640-KFI)

http://www.mediafire.com/listen/t8bgoxrk825wy9p/639-CNR1-1308z100113PL380.MP3

738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan Typical male-hosted call-in talk program at 1355
featuring female callers only (apparently heard by Michael also)

http://www.mediafire.com/listen/u6jhyy1pnrvyfi9/738-BEL2-1355z100113PL380.MP3

1400 TOH recording of the BEL2 fanfare and male-voiced ID. Some
distortion due to the fading signal, and the need to max out the
PL-380's audio amp to compensate. The TOH was at 20 seconds

[IRCA] 1640 report

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

For the last several nights on 1640 ...

ESPN - WTNI (relog)

Oldies - probably KZLS (previously logged as KFXY)

Does Disney simulcast from coast to coast, or are there time zone shifts?
I've been trying to match 1560 WQEW to 1640. I have KDIA from quite some

1640. 1640 would be OR #1 if I can snag it, and state #48. Guess which

Re: [IRCA] TP DX for Tuesday October 1

2013-10-01 Thread d1028gary

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your detailed TP report today (and always), which always provides a
very interesting comparison.

Well, it works both ways, Bruce. Almost every morning you report some
good-level TP's that never a manage a trace here (567 and 819 this morning, for
example). Those two were probably lost in the Seattle 570 and 820 splatter
here-- victims of a $50 radio's version of DSP filtering.

For some unknown reason, this location seem to provide a boost for low-band
Chinese signals, while yours and Dennis' seem to favor Japan. Nick seems to get
the best of both worlds, although we haven't yet heard from him today.

73, Gary

Conditions here were down a bit from yesterday. There were quite a few
stations to be heard, but the big guns were weaker than normal, and the
rest were mostly near their normal signal strength.

972KBS not its usual self today, noticeably weaker than normal, best
at 1312 with woman in KK

audio (talk) 1341, although I can't totally rule out wishful thinking
1170Partial KBS pips u/KPUG 1300, then another set of pips ending

Nick,
Was away for a few days, so just saw your 1575 post
today... Although it might have been a spur as you say, I
wouldn't totally write it off. I'd recalled seeing an off-channel
carriers on 1575 during the interesting TA evenings a week or so ago,
and checking my Perseus recording from the 26th I was indeed seeing one
about 30 Hz low, with another pretty much on nominal.I guess we'll
have to wait for some more TA action to hopefully learn more.

[IRCA] Alberta TP/DU for 1 Oct 2013

2013-10-01 Thread Nigel Pimblett
October began with an OK, but not exceptional day. Listened from
1245 to 1320, and the only sign of Chinese DX here on the prairie was a
decent off-freq carrier on 1206. That peaked early though (about 1250),
and faded thereafter. Japan was pretty good today though. The best
signals were from the regulars, the Japanese on 567, 594, 693, 747, 774,
828 and Korea on 972 and 1566.At the second tier, still fair audio,
up to good at times, was Japan on 702, 873, and 1287 along with 1575
VOA. Presumed Japan on 1422 had traces of audio at 1315 and the NHK
time pips were quite distinct on 639 at 1300. Only other audio was a
very weak unID on 837 with audio traces at 1254.

Yes, it's JJ Michael. HLAZ broadcasts to Japan from 1230 to 1345UT
every morning (well, evening their time), complete with a directional
array; the transmission beams past Japan and down western North America.

[IRCA] TP 1 Oct; Victoria version

2013-10-01 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Part of a slow deterioration (shortly to become more drastic judging
by the recent burp in the solar wind), but still some reasonable
signals if you hunted (quite fertile territory around 1400UT if one
had the time; more Chinese than yesterday).Just way too erratic,
and too much domestic splatter to be entirely pleasant
however. Congratulations to Michael for getting into the thick of
things right away; note, it's not always like this.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

774 JOUB CC lessons 1343UT; still at quite a reasonable level at
1423UT w/EE lessons again

972 HLCA woman in KK 1313UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

279 R. Rossii operatic singing by man and woman 1346UT //189
567 JOIK man in JJ //594 1354UT
594 JOAK man in JJ //567 1354UT
639 CNR1 woman in CC 1315UT
747 JOIK CC lessons 1343UT
828 JOBB JJ wx report 1316UT
963 CRI woman singing then woman and man in RR 1352UT //1323
1053 KK jammer 1349UT
1287 JOHR man in JJ 1408UT
1323 CRI woman and man in RR //963 1349UT
1566 HLAZ man in JJ 1304UT, easily equal, maybe better w/man in CC 1405UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

189 R. Rossii operatic singing //279 1346UT
603 HLSA? Elvis, are you lonesome tonight 1404UT
864 man in JJ not //1287 1354UT
873 JOGB man in JJ //774 1306UT
891 JOHK man in JJ //594 1402UT, battling with huge KBBI splatter
1017 CRI chimes and fanfare at 1400UT, battling local electrical
noise (right on cue across the hour)

1575 VoA? woman in SE Asian language 1410UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

153 R. Rossii operatic mx //279 1346UT
531 ? DU EE sounding man 1308UT, definitely not //594
711 man talking in splash, too much to make much out of it 1309UT
837 group singing not //594 1357UT; CC sounding man heard earlier at 1340UT
918 CC inflected talk by woman 1405UT
981 CNR1 man talking 1350UT //6030
1143 Taiwan? woman talking CC inflection 1410UT
1251 CNR1took some effort, but this seemed //639 and 981 with a
slight offset 1350UT

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

558 621 648 738 756 765 855 999 1008 1044 1179 1242 1314 1476
