[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 2-21
Hello All, Asian propagation continued to recover at a slow pace from the recent meltdown, with a couple of big gun TP's actually managing good audio briefly during peak sunrise enhancement. Although there were still far fewer Asians making an appearance than usual both the low and high band had some propagation from 1420-1500, with 1575-VOA the best performer with steady fair to good audio for most of the period. Peak sunrise enhancement was around 1450 here, with 594-JOAK (good during peaks), 603-HLSA (poor), 693-JOAB (fair) and a presumed 738-BEL2 (fair) showing up on the low band. 972-HLCA was also in and out with fair audio during this time, while 1377-CNR1 (fair), 1503-JOUK (fair), 1575-VOA (good) and 1593-CNR1 (fair) were in and out of the domestic splatter on the high band. Nothing exotic was to be found, and the entire group of anemic Asians bailed prior to 1505. Although it was definitely another mediocre session, at least the Asians seem to be in a recovering trend. 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) C.Crane SWP 7.5 Slider loopstick Ultralight + 12 Experimental FSL antenna ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] Perseus captures from 1991
I finally got around to going through a box of VHS videotapes from the late '80s / early '90s spectrum capture experiments, as originally developed by Craig Healy (NG1U), and mentioned in this article: http://chowdanet.com/markc/webpage/WA1ION/vcrdx.pdf There were about 6 tapes in the box. Two of these, when played into a receiver, had reasonable performance. One of these was the tape Craig had originally supplied me. This was made at his QTH near Providence, RI. The whole AM band is captured. Sensitivity on the lower half was quite low so it's primarily the local stations such as 630, 790, and 920. Some skip signals can be heard on the upper half of the dial. I still have to review the tape to determine the exact date and times of recording. Items on a news / sports station, possibly with some Google follow-up, will nail down the date. At some point in the recording there should be a time check on one station or another. I looked into the lower shortwave spectrum but noted little in the way of real (non-birdie) signals, so no CHU or WWV assistance on the time. The second tape was one I made at Billerica, MA in April 1991 during the wee hours of the morning: 0643-1043 UTC. Because 50 kW WRKO on 680 is only 2.8 miles / 4.5 km from the receiving site, a notch filter for 680 was inserted ahead of the VCR input. Usable sensitivity for the capture came in starting around 800 kHz and up. One thing that must be kept in mind is that this primitive version of spectrum capture had a rather small dynamic range: only about 30 to 40 dB from a hashy noise floor up to the level of a strong local on the verge of causing distortion and spurs. The tapes, obviously, are not going to produce much in the way of weaker signal DX. Before the tapes have a chance to deteriorate, I'm porting at least some of the contents over to Perseus files. This also gives a ready method for sharing the experiment results with others. I reset the computer date/time so that the Perseus time-stamping is relatively close to the occurrence of the original recordings. After I get all this stuff digitized, I'll go over it for any interesting audio clips. Though the VCR DX method became known to the MW DX world about a quarter century ago, it is widely believed that, as far back as the JFK administration, spook agencies such as the NSA were able to store substantial RF bandwidths for later review. Broadcast studio grade videotape, or something similar but custom-designed, was used. Converters allowed any chunk of spectrum to be heterodyned to the baseband range (0-3 MHz?) the tapes could accommodate. The late Gordon Nelson (WA1UXQ) seemed aware of it. Maybe some tapes will show up at a Fort Meade, MD fleamarket / yard sale so we can tune around and hear stuff like Belize 834 and Bermuda 1235 once again, as well as Murray-the-K on WINS proclaiming his status as the Fifth Beatle. [IRCA] Late reception of Asia from Grayland
This morning, despite the high A-index was a very good morning in Grayland, WA for Asia. Sunrise enhancement started about 1430utc and hung in there until past 1600utc with a few stations, like 972-Korea providing audio past 1730utc — 2.5 hours after sunrise. That’s not unheard of but not expected during a solar cycle maximum and on the tail end of two days of very high A-indexes. I was wondering why I was hearing Macedonian on 1440. //ed it to WDRJ's web site. Language sounded familiar - I am learning Serbian - but talk was re makedoniya and the languages have similarities... Anyhow, the music stands out, sounds a bit like Greek music, as might be expected... so if you need it, this time every week ... not sure when the program it starts or ends ... but heard around 2200 EST Normal format is Black Gospel, Rejoice... [IRCA] TP DX in Seattle on 21 Feb
The marginal conditions continued today. VOA-1575 was the only genuine bright spot this morning, with a rather nice signal for about 15 minutes. The electrical noise was stronger than average, but it was locally generated so it doesn't count as TP DX :) Good - Would have been armchair copy for a few minutes, if not for the electrical noise 1575VOA, fair-weak with the usual English IDs 1430, then it started to fade up with Burmese program. Reasonably good strength at times 1431-1447, but electrical noise made reception rougher than it should have been. Fair - A native speaker could recognize a few words now and then 747JOIB, man woman with English lesson 1426 774JOUB, man woman 1408, listed as Korean lesson. Better at 1500 with pips, music bridge, then man in Japanese. [IRCA] Perseus captures from 1986 and 1991
That's basically it Bill, though I think that 2 MHz would be about the top of the baseband range. Storing higher frequency blocks would require a downconverter stage. That, as far as I know, was the NSA method employed at places like Menwith Hill (UK), Resolute Bay (Canada), Thule (Greenland), Incirlik (Turkey), the Aleutian Islands, and numerous other monitoring outposts in the '60s as we snooped on the Russian bear (and probably the ChiCom's too). Regarding Craig's comment, I have identified that his recording starts at 0859 UTC on 1 MAY 1986. Lots of news about the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident a few days earlier. Fun to hear 1560 WQXR doing classical, as well as hearing contemporary hit music and oldies on numerous other stations that are now boring talk ... aah the good old days! No TA's or Latin Americans, but what do you want with only about 40 dB of dynamic range? So, besides my 1991 stuff, now we have Perseus files from 1986! In talking to Mike on the phone about 28 minutes ago, he told me w...@frontier.com. Just to make sure, I Googled frontier.net, and it immediately shot me over to something called gobrainstorm.net. I think the frontier.com domain is the correct one. 73,Rick DauSouth Omaha, Nebraska ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] TP 21 Feb, Victoria version
As Bruce mentioned, there really was a nice boost from 1575 this morning, best on the north Flag, but otherwise, DX was fairly thin around sunrise (though thinner before, although 1230-1300UT had some small action), and I wasn't able to stick around until 1730UT to see if 972 was still there (perhaps not, hi). Oddly, the few signals that had a reasonable carrier delivered some audio; there really wasn't much else pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least briefly): 1575 VoA presumed woman in SE Asian language 1446 peaked out at this level; very little sign on 1566 in comparison. Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise): 594 JOAK woman in JJ after jazzy vocal 1242UT; not strong but quite clear. 774 JOBB man in JJ, woman in EE 1429UT; would have been perfectly readable if not for splatter not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be understood by a native speaker: the above, passing through Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) : 747 JOIB woman talking //828 1445UT 828 JOBB woman talking //774 1430UT Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter): 972 1251 1377 best wishes, Nick -- Nick Hall-Patch Victoria, BC Canada n...@ieee.org ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
