[IRCA] 1290 - KOWB, Laramie WY
(6-foot-diagonal wood frame tuned loop, RTL-SDR dongle, Ham It Up upconverter) I plan on being more organized about posting brief domestic logs here in coordination with more detailed postings and recordings at my blog, but I had to share this one. Instead of sleeping right now, I'm listening to a recording on 1290 from about 9:10-10:30pm that I made while I was doing other things, and got my first catch of a station in a town where I previously lived: 1290 KOWB, Laramie WY, weak at 10:05pm (0505UT), 1000W, call (new), 599 miles The loop was aligned SSW-NNE intentionally to try to somewhat null semi-local KCUB and point towards Laramie. Thye were going out of the TOH news into the Bill Cunningham Show and they were advertising their phone app. The signal was battling KCUB, a Mexican station that I'm sure is XEAP but haven't been able to truly confirm, and at least one other station. Anyway, I lived in Laramie for most of the 90s and have real nostalgia for the place and that time of life. Clever call letters, too. (Coincidentally, I went back to 1290 in real time little later to check KAZA per a secondary topic in the 1520 KKXA thread.) Good job on KOWB. I believed that station was owned by Curt Gowdy along with KCGY FM. Hear anything from Idaho yet on 1290? Re: [IRCA] 1290 - KOWB, Laramie WY
Mike, Thanks! I believe Gowdy still owned the stations while I was there. As far as anything farther north on 1290, nope, but I plan to keep working roughly N-S on this freq as I feel like it. I would hope to eventually catch KGVO Missoula MT as they do have a lobe this way, but KOUU Pocatello ID would have to be on day power and their strong null is pointed right this way; their azimuth from here is exactly due north. I also need to get a solid ID on presumed XEAP which is just a bit east of due south, so they can all show up (along with KCUB) in one loop orientation. [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-24
Hello All, November clunker propagation continued in full force this morning, limiting Asian signals to carrier levels. Even the TP carriers didn't seem very impressed with the situation, as only 594, 1044, 1053 and 1575 managed to register weak heterodynes, peaking (if you can call it that) around 1500. With the exception of Saturday morning (when fairly good audio showed up from 594-JOAK and 1593-CRN1) Asian propagation has now been in the tank for two full weeks. 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) 7.5 loopstick Tecsun PL-380 Ultralight + 15 FSL antenna ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] Tanzania - 1377
It's been heard in Newfoundland, though I recall that it came during an aurora that completely wiped put all of Europe except for weak signals from Spain. What we discovered was that there appeared to be very few signals on the air at all from Africa. Tanzania was one of them. There have been a few occasions when we found France off the air allowing us to hear Ukraine and China, also a low power Brit. Maybe Iran, too, but I don't have my records at hand. [IRCA] IRCA DX Monitor on DVD Wonderful!!!!
Hi everyone, I just got from Phil and the IRCA bookstore the DX Monitor on DVD. Wow! What a walk down memory lane. I had lost a lot of bulletins through the years with moves and all, plus I did not join the IRCA until 1968, so I missed out on the first 4 years. What a change in DXing through the years. As each year goes by, it is just a little slice of time, but when it all adds up and I go back to 1964, radio was in a different World. AM was it. FM was not popular and in many cases, few people listened to it. AM's supported the FM's. Chief Engineers were from the old school of knowing was a QSL was and the percentage of QSL's a DXer got back on their first try was nearly 100%. I know in the mid 60s, I rarely had to send out a follow up. Even when I did, the reply came through then, with rarely any hold outs. DX, Coast to Coast was the norm. I see Larry Godwin reporting WTIC, a easy catch from the West on Monday mornings..Ah, Monday Mornings...few DXers were not up all night or most of t he night in those days. I remember hearing 5 KWers from the East on many frequencies. 970 had a mix of FL and TN for me, WFLA and WAVE. I am sure pleased with the DVD set (2). A very nice Christmas Gift for the DXer on your list you have no idea what to buy for. Thank you for all who had a part and getting this done for the club. So many names from the past. This made my day. Thank you Phil for all you have done and continue to do for our club. Again my prayers are with you, Sherry, and your family. Re: [IRCA] unIDs
Paul Walker and Bob (WF8V) IDed my 1320 as WOBL Oberlin OH, catching the ad as Harrison Ford (not Heritage as I'd heard it) on Rte 58 in Wellington. Paul also wonders if my WBTK-sounding ID on 1570 is in fact KTVK. I can hear the VTK but am hearing the first call as a W but it's choppy and maybe a K. That would be SD. A relog but am curious if anyone hears it as a K rather than a W. There's two IDs in the recording, at: http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?9387 Thanks, Bob and Paul! Re: [IRCA] IRCA DX Monitor on DVD Wonderful!!!!
Through the years, we tend to forget about a lot of DX we had gotten in the past. With these DVD's, the catches are in digital print forever. Many of us (me included), no longer has every issue and trying to buy up sets at auctions and the like, it is not an easy task, if you can even do it. Plus all of the room needed to hold years of bulletins. So having from 1964-2011 on two DVD's is really nice. I found myself this afternoon, losing myself in the DVDs for several hours. Great to see renewed interest in this. Lee Freshwater did the scanning over five years ago, a huge task for which he should be thanked. A pity that the DVDs fell off the map in the ensuing years, but they were publicized back then; that's when I got my copy. The DXMs are searchable as well from Volume 28 onwards, so quite a gem. best wishes, Nick There seems to be no mention of this at http://ircaonline.org/bookst.htm . Chuck, I am sure it will be listed. I knew about the DVD's for some time. However I did not know they were available until I talked to Phil in Billings. They really weren't as it took a couple of months to get my set. I wonder if the NRC has anything like this? Going back to the 30s, would be interesting. Unfortunately, CE's have to handle a series of stations in most cases, not one AM, or maybe an AM FM combo. So they just do not have the time or energy to do tests like they once did. CE's today, as most everyone are not letter writers either. Add up everything else, I am surprised we ever get a QSL back. The KREL 1580 QSL was a surprise. Like in the case of WSPO, the clubs are answering the QSL's. That has happened a lot in the past several years. But we are lucky we get the tests we do. I would hate to try and re-QSL the stations I have. Of course that would be totally impossible anyway, as so many are long gone. Re: [IRCA] IRCA DX Monitor on DVD Wonderful!!!!
See Phil...you mention it and the orders are lining up...hi. But in all seriousness the collection of the DX Monitors from the beginning is priceless. You cannot put a price of great memories. I have been at the dials for 52 years and it has been one amazing 5+ decades. To top to off...let's see...two things come to mind, the 9 kHz plan in 1978 that gave us the chance to log many many catches from countries we would have never had a chance to hear. I remember reading back in the 70s, the easiest countries to log on MW. India was considered nearly impossible at that time. Indians then, most were low power on MW and on the 10 kHz plan, but still we DXers proved that to be wrong after they moved to 9 kHz. I still remember well logging that UNID on 864 and one of John Bryant's student's understook the language and that got a report out and that QSL from Shillong in NE India. Of course in the article countries like Bangladesh or Nepal were not even considered. Then of course the X Band. I first time I had logged New Jersey other than a NYC transmitter site, not one NJ but two on the X Band. It was fun while that lasted. Going back and re-reading that catches that everyone heard at the time is a lot of fun. Re: [IRCA] IRCA DX Monitor on DVD Wonderful!!!!
Mike, Too bad you weren't around in the late 60s/early 70s as 1400 kHz was wide open mm's. The nearing station on MM's was Mansfield Ohio! One DXer in Seattle logged NJ on 1400! I got the WNUE 1400 Ft. Walton Beach DX Test in 1971. A bit later, 1400 from NV decided to stay on MM's and that was the beginning of the end. Bill Block and I were recently talking about that. I sure wish I would have had this beverage back then.
