[IRCA] TA's sort of

2015-09-26 Thread Nicholas Hall-Patch
As sunrise approaches London, I guess we'll have to say that the DX gods
were just tempting us.

Other carriers were heard on 909 (quite strong), 999, 855, 1053 and 1458,
but nothing developed

best wishes,

Nick

2015-09-26 Thread Don Moman VE6JY
Certainly more and better carriers than last night. Around ~0430 1215
1377 1422 are the best on average, some with audio or close to it... but
others pop up quite nicely at times. 189 has listenable audio.

Tonite the European DKaz is visibly better than either the Eu or NEu
beverages even on hets near the lower end (esp for Nick since he asked).
189 is much better on the Eu beverage.

Wondering out loud, but if one was to build a rosette of DKaz arrays -was
thinking 4 or 5 covering the major directions from here - with the
feedpoints in the center, would the interaction be significant? - anyone
with a guess or even better, first hand experience?

[IRCA] 1710 possible "CHIM FM", pirate?

2015-09-26 Thread Tim Tromp
A bit of a mystery tonight in Michigan. I was tuning around the band and
found a stronger than usual signal on 1710. Religious talk and Christian
pop music from what I could tell with a decent signal but horrible
distorted modulation (at times it sounded better using the FM mode on my
Perseus). There have been occasional mentions of Canada between songs.
Strangely I've also heard what sounds like current weather conditions read
by a female robo voice, similar to the TIS stations that rebroadcast NOAA
weather radio, but this doesn't sound like one of the usual TIS stations
that now populate 1710 from the East. This is sometimes given between
songs for about 30 seconds or so. 0500 UTC now and still going. A bit of
Googling returned a hit for CHIM FM out of Timmins, Ontario:

http://www.chimfm.com/

Note the reference to 1710 AM.

I have no confirmation or ID yet (that I can understand anyway) but
everything seems to point to this station (signal even seems best on the
North D-KAZ).

Anyone know what's going on here? If it's a Part 15 station then I
shouldn't be hearing it from here. Is anyone else hearing this one? How
about you Ontario guys?

I also found this thread on Radioinsight interesting:

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-26

2015-09-26 Thread d1028gary
Thanks to Bruce and Colin for their earlier TP reports, and I'm happy that they
both were able to enjoy this morning's enhanced conditions. With my late start
at 1255 it was pretty obvious that the Asians had already made some serious
noise across the band, and I felt like someone showing up late to a party that
was already in full swing. Besides blowtorch-level signals from the Koreans on
972 and 1566 there were the usual NHK big guns on 594, 693, 747, 774 and 828
with potent audio in and out, along with weaker audio from a whole collection
of less common Asians on 603, 657, 738, 936 and 1044. The 1053-Jammer had its
co-channel TP along with it (probably JOAR), and the high band was also full of
activity, with 1323, 1377, 1503 and 1575 having fair signals in and out.

The wild band was full of activity, and just like Colin's comment about a
live-DXing session at Rockwork 4, it was a question of where to get started.
After tuning away from the blowtorch TP signals I concentrated on the low band
second-tier Asians on 603, 657 and 738. 603 had its first mix of HLSA and China
this season around 1305 (both at weak levels), while 657-Pyongyang was hitting
fair peaks with its Korean male tirade at 1308. 738-BEL2's female-voiced
Chinese news was in and out of the San Francisco splatter at 1305, while brief
checks of 972 and 1566 revealed almost nuclear-level energy from both HLCA and
HLAZ. With 603-China's first appearance of the season I was hoping to get a
good recording of it mixing with HLSA but it never really cooperated, and the
other low-band Asian targets on 657 and 738 didn't build up much steam, either.
The middle and high band featured quite a few weak-level Asians on 936, 963,
1044, 1134, 1143, 1287, 1323, 1377 and other frequencies, while 1575-VOA
reached good levels in and out with its male-female Asiatic language speech
around 1315. There was a huge contrast in the signal levels of 972 and 1566 and
everything else, and I made a couple of recordings of these two blowtorches
just to remember the situation. 1134 seemed to have a mix of KBS and JOQR late
on around 1345, while 603-HLSA made somewhat of a rally around 1350 (without
its Chinese co-channel) to hit good peaks at times. 972-HLCA maintained its
blowtorch level right up until 1359 (when it collapsed for the TOH), while
594-JOAK and 693-JOAB did stick around for a few minutes after that. Overall it
was an outstanding session for TP variety, although once again the really
potent signals were all from the Japanese and Korean big guns.

[IRCA] 26 September 2015 TP/DU Victoria B.C. As good as it gets... so far. (PART TWO)

2015-09-26 Thread R. Colin Newell
1342UTC - 909, 918, 936, 945, 954, 963 - all in some level of audio or
another - scrambling around at this point. https://youtu.be/29WJvenJDbo
Peak DXing nuttiness - gives me a good sense of what Gary's Rockworks scene
must be like... except I am indoors, safe and warm!

1345UTC - 1503 - NHK Syncro's - assuming the JJ OM talking - Most likely
JOUK Akita - https://youtu.be/YGELDXGGCms

1346UTC - 1566 / 1575 2 great signals totally holding the fort on the upper
band. https://youtu.be/hgZRHvQJCsU

1352UTC - 603 - Korea (t) Assume the poppy dance music - band starting to
slip every so slightly about now.

1354UTC - 954 - Japan - JOKR Tokyo - JJ OM/YL in the clear

1355UTC - 1143 - Taiwan - Fisheries station - https://youtu.be/k4ED8YhqZU0

1357UTC - 1323 - CRI - China - // 963 khz w/ Chinese orchestral music -

1359UTC - 963 - CRI - China - // 1323khz w/ Chinese orchestral music -
great level! Full ID on hour by OM/YL after pips -
https://youtu.be/5_Rj3NDTk5Q

1402UTC - 612 - Australia - 4QR - Brisbane - Armchair news and opinion
pieces with OM/YL - at this point there were
a dozen or so stations still in audio - but the downward trend had begun -
as I turned off and made my way back to bed
for my Saturday sleep in.

I have been medium wave DXing since, I guess, since the late 60's with
various small transistor radios. It was only with the loan of a
4-band SW portable in the Spring of 1971 that a spark was kindled that
would never die. 2 and 1/2 years later on November the 3rd, 1973
my father bought me a Radio Shack DX150B - a radio that would be a game
changer for chasing DX on medium wave and shortwave.

A complimentary copy of the IRCA Bulletin in the Spring of 1975 uncovered
an underground of mysterious men and women that shared this
passion for long distance radio reception. One of those people was Nick
Hall Patch, whom I would call on the phone - and begin what has been a
very successful 40 year collaboration on taking a vibrant hobby to its very
limits... and then beyond. DX-expiditions and GTG's would soon introduce me
to the likes of Bruce Portzer, Gary Debock, Guy Atkins and the late great
John Bryant.

I realize today, this morning, that this hobby is every bit as exciting as
the first days of chasing distant radio stations as a 12 year old.

Have fun everyone - 73 and good DX!

[IRCA] 26 September 2015 TP/DU Victoria B.C. As good as it gets... so far. (PART ONE)

2015-09-26 Thread R. Colin Newell
With over 50 channels in audio at times, this mornings session was one for
the win column.
It might have had something to do with a fresh new antenna, A W/NW Flag at
286 degrees remotely adjusted
with a Connelly VACTROL unit -- or just that the conditions were just gosh
darn good.

Last night there were some signs of TA activity in Victoria with 2
threshold carriers (that started with a tip
via e-mail from DX veteran Nick Hall-Patch.)

Anyway - onto the logs - with lots of video!

Session went from 1305 until 1410 when I packed it in -- and there was
still a lot of activity - but my warm bed summoned.

1308U - 558 - (UNID) OM talking in the "fairly clear" which was most likely
Japanese but could have been Korean

1312U - 972 - KBS - Korea - bell ringing levels with usual KK talk and
occasional solemn music - https://youtu.be/zHjCUK-bWr0

1314U - 860 - CBC Prince Rupert - Coastal weather - at amazing levels
completely clear on channel. https://youtu.be/n9lA97XUcuo

1315U - 890 - KBBI Homer Alaska - alone on channel with BBC radio content

1317U - 1566 - FEBC Korea - JJ OM at impressive levels - likely the best
signal of the morning - https://youtu.be/7gB5hOGsD7I

1322U - 873 - NHK - JOGB Kumamoto - EE/JJ lessons above the local buzz on
this channel

1323U - 657 - DPRK - Pyongyang - 1st time I have heard this in a LONG time
with strident YL harangue in Korean

1326U - 1098 - UNid - China? - Strident YL-OM in Chinese / no question
about the language / def. not Korean or Japanese

1327U - 1575 - VOA - Thailand - banging in at times pushing passed 1566 for
strength supremacy

1330U - 1053 - S. Korean jammer - usual stuttering mess of garbage with the
occasional appearance of a relaxed Japanese
speaking OM - https://youtu.be/aS_lWrOjPLY

1331U - 702 - Mix of 2 or 3 things scrapping it out on channel.

1333U - 639 - CHR1 - assume the strident CC YL with occasional bits of
orchestral music later - // 1098 Khz

1335U - 1017 - Tonga (t) assume the Island flavored music here at good
levels -

1340U - 846, 855, 864, 873, 890, 891 - tune up of activity on channel (at
this point there were over 50 channels in audio --
one of the times that an SDR for later analysis would be cool - but you
would spend hours replaying various segments of spectrum -
This is where "live DXing" is at its most fun! --
https://youtu.be/Bq014_M_lYU ---

Cutting this into 2 sections lest it get rejected.
