Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/3/16

2016-10-03 Thread mark
I remember hearing a Colombian on 660 back in the 80s on a SE beverage,
on a DXpedition in the Indianapolis area with Chuck Mitchell (now SK)
and Jon Williams. I also remember hearing Radio Coro from Venezuela
(is/was that more of a network, than just one station?) on 1210 around
the same time.

I keep seeing a carrier on 1039.62 from time to time in the evening,
which I'm assuming is La Voz de Carabobo, Valencia, Venezuela. Haven't
heard any audio yet too much splatter from whatever station happens
to be on 1040 (usually WHO or some SS station to my south).

I've always liked listening for Latins, both on AM and shortwave. I
guess I like the music. It was always a good day to wake up to La Voz
del Llano blasting in on 6115! :^)

[IRCA] TP 3 Oct Victoria version

2016-10-03 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I wonder what caused that propagation collapse? Essentially, things
became "normal"JOUB and HLAZ at good strength on and off from
about 1230UT onwards, several other regulars at poorer strength (all
Asian), then by around 1400UT, 4QR romped around for a few minutes,
and that was it.

Well, possibly I needed to catch up on my sleep...

best wishes,

Nick

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

4QR, JOIB JOUB, JOBB all got here at various times, though not
consistent by any means; sometimes 3LO would climb on top of JOUB,
other times the reverse.

576 2RN jazz, then man talking //1512 at 1253UT
702 2BL man in DU English 1321UT, // 774, 612

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK various times, still there at 1416 with Japanese talk
756 RNZ National jazzy vocal 1156UT, also heard well at 1254 and 1351UT
891 5AN? man in DU English over JOHK 1245UT; assumed this, as had
heard ABC fanfare at 1230UT

1116 4BC 1322UT, man in DU English, eventually, 4BC ID

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

549 2CR light music //702 and 774 1252UT, other times also.
585 7RN jazz //576 1254UT
603 R. Waatea ? island vocals 1318UT, but no sign of 765
675 RNZ National man talking //567 1334UT
693 JOAB two men //828 1336UT
738 2NR man talking //702 1251, 1357UT
837 RNZ National man talking //675 1409T
846 2RN jazz //576 1249UT
855 part mystery, part ABC. countryish music 1330UT, not //702 or
612, though there were also men talking that seemed //702 at times,
plus fanfare at 1400UT.

873 JOGB //774 1407UT, Japanese talk
1287 pop music 1410UT, assumed JOHR

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

531 man mumbling for quite some time DU English inflection, then
into rhythmic music, maybe an island flavor? 1315-18UT

603 2RN jazz //576 1320UT, so Waatea? didn't last long here
621 3RN jazz //576 1252 and 1351UT
639 RNZ National. man talking, DU English inflection 1337UT, //675,
thought there was an offset making it confusing, then into rhythmic
music, of which there were traces on 675 and 756. New here
657 light music not //612 1353UT; Star? Needed to null 669 splash to
dig this out

837 RNZ National man talking //675
882 traces of soft music 1310UT, Star?
936 man talking DU English inflection 1303UT; noted again 1359UT, but
faded by the hour

954 man talking, maybe Japanese 1411UT
1233 2NC man talking //612, briefly in 1230 splat at 1411UT
1242 man talking, Japanese inflection 1410UT, bit of a Japanese
resurgence after 1400UT

1512 2RN, jazz and man talking //576 1254UT, nice surprise in splash
1548 4QD man talking, woman on phone, creeping through 1550 splash
and //702 1320UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter) lots of near audio here

So right I don't understand why this is such a mystery to the east
coasters. Aurora geometry and land path and bearing to DX = bearing to
interference explains it all.

Subject: Re: [IRCA] Latin America DX western US/Canada (was: Oklahoma TP DX

I think that the westerners lack of enthusiasm for auroras is
generally poor results when one occurs. Possible reason is that the
aurora has to be quite intense to affect us, as our geomagnetic
latitude is further south than the eastern and midwestern USA. An
aurora that wipes out midwestern interference for easterners is also
going to start to block paths from say Venezuela to the Pacific
northwest. An aurora that shuts down reception of the still
dominant eastern clear channels for eastern DXers, allowing southern
DX to get through, has little effect on our principal interference
sources here, which are from the south (San Francisco, Portland
etc.) Our interference from Boise, Calgary and Billings, MT is just
not that important in comparison. As someone said once to me in
Vancouver, BC, when you face north, the next city of any size is St
Petersburg; there is just not much interference up that way.

So, we're spoiled here. Compared with the east and mid west, the
band is not so full of powerful signals. However, what powerful
signals we have are all in the way of reception from Central and
South America, which is a fair bit further away than those locations
are from the eastern part of the continentmostly a land path too,
whereas your paths often involve water. And the aurora won't
affect them without affecting targets further south.

So, we'll just have to wait for split frequencies and continent wide
clear channels to return.

best wishes,

Nick

So, we're spoiled here. Compared with the east and mid west, the
band is not so full of powerful signals. However, what powerful
signals we have are all in the way of reception from Central and
South America, which is a fair bit further away than those locations
are from the eastern part of the continentmostly a land path too,
whereas your paths often involve water. And the aurora won't
affect them without affecting targets further south.

So, we'll just have to wait for split frequencies and continent wide
clear channels to return.

best wishes,

Nick

My "two cents." I'm always surprised at how auroras are not usually
a cause for great DX enthusiasm out west and that so little
non-Mexico Latin American activity is ever reported even with
probably 4 times as many active DXers out there as compared to the
northeastern USA and adjacent Canadian provinces. (And you guys are
often running better antennas.)

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 3 October 2016

2016-10-03 Thread Nigel Pimblett
At first I thought something had happened to my antenna
while I was away, but it seems it was simply that I coordinated my
return with a tanking of conditions. The only audio heard here this
morning was from 4BC on 1116, noted at 1313 with their talk programming.
Carriers seemed to be exclusively of DU origin.

Other than a couple of Argentinian X-banders heard before the US band
filled up the only country I've heard from mainland South America is
Colombia.Like Kaz I find 1170 the most common, but have also heard
810, 680, and 1000 in the last year or two.None of those appear to
be on ideal frequencies from a Victoria point of view. No luck here on
Venezuala yet, and not through lack of trying. Have had tentative on

Caracas on 750 is the best YV bet behind WSB at times. Coro 780 gets out

1110 Carupano can be heard but is rare. 910 can have the YV's Rumbos chimes

Colombia should be available on 810 as mentioned, also 650 and 690.
Venezuela is probably best on 750, but also 770 and 780. Those would
probably be the easiest SA countries from Oklahoma. Another option would

be

PJB-800 which also counts as SA.

Most likely cheating? It's a strict daytimer, no night power at all so it
is cheating

This station has been a giant turd for over a decade and has never amounted
to anything to stayed on the air for more then a year at a time

Mark I have 5 TB of Storage Space for my ELAD Recorded files, so I don't worry
about the size of the recorded Files…what they are, is what they are. Usually
once I have extracted what I need from them, I trash the Files…..I don't keep
them for Posterity. I barely have enough time to review them all , so the less
work I can create for myself the better. I know some people have Files from
Years ago, that they haven't even reviewed yet!! I like to hear them, review
them, report them, and Trash the Remnants!! I'm getting too old to start a
collection of Recorded Files.

If you don't don't have a lot of Storage Space for files, your milage may
differ…..

Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/3/16

2016-10-03 Thread Neil Kazaross
Basically every mile you head west from the east coast in the US makes S.
Am. harder to log. Here in IL my south DKAZ can usually dig up HJNW 1170
every night but that is the only regular. Perhaps KFAQ could be looped from
Perry OK? 1100 Barranquilla can be had in AU and once in a while 760. The
deeper Colombians like 810 are quite rare. 1090 Blu Radio from Cartegena
has shown up a few times the past year in severe AU.

Caracas on 750 is the best YV bet behind WSB at times. Coro 780 gets out
well and you won't have the WBBM issues I do. Try at sunset or even earlier
to hope to reduce Mexican QRM.
1110 Carupano can be heard but is rare. 910 can have the YV's Rumbos chimes
sometimes in AU.

2016-10-03 Thread Chuck Hutton
Russ:

Since Mark mentioned recording the entire band (rather than just one station),
I'm thinking he wants to reduce the file size of the recorded band, not the
audio.

Besides, who worries about audio file size unless emailing them around?

As for reducing the file size of the recorded band, you're pretty much stuck.
It's by nature not very compressable.

Re: [IRCA] AM BCB DX………NEW COUNTRY # 38 ARGENTINA - Heard during AURORA

2016-10-03 Thread mark

I managed to use up a ton of disk space recording the AM band overnight
from 0226 UTC to 1241 UTC (Oct. 3), continuous. Lots to listen to of
course. I haven't gotten any TOH recording schedules set up yet. I
*really* need to get those set up...

Speaking of disk space, is there any software out there that gives you
control over the sampling rate (to help reduce file sizes)?

How do most of you schedule your recordings? (TOH, BOH, +/- a few
minutes each way?)

I'll share later (when I get more time) some of my AM DXing memories
from decades ago (late 70s, 80s).

When I am in Kona (almost every year) the Marshalls on 1098 put in a
massive signal -- with, what seems like, 60% modulation (or even less)

it is an energy saving strategy because the Marshalls are 100% powered by
diesel generators.

Pretty much the same for Tonga.

Similar situation on this side of the country with:
Algeria 153, 891
Morocco 595, 612
W. Sahara 711a
Mauritania 783

Carriers can be monster level yet audio so weak as to prevent copy of

On September 19 WCNF filed a Notice of Resumption form with the FCC. It said
that the station had commenced operation on September 18. The license would
have expired on November 2 if it hadn't returned to the air.

2016-10-03 Thread Mark Connelly via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
The following sites give a fair approximation of what is heard here on the East
Coast - Bruce Conti's stuff and my stuff in the New England / eastern Canada
region.

http://www.bamlog.com/2010decadebook.htm
http://www.bamlog.com/2014peidxped.htm
http://www.qsl.net/wa1ion/doc1/audio_aug_to_dec2015.htm
http://www.qsl.net/wa1ion/doc1/audio_march2015.htm

How much of that applies to the West Coast is anyone's guess. Obviously what
domestic interference is on what frequency will change things up.

Even around here going from a beach site to a few miles inland kills off a
remarkable amount of stuff. Brazilians and sub-equatorial Africans tend to
"fall off the cliff": 40 dB down 40 miles inland in the optimum period
immediately after sunset. Closer countries such as Colombia have better inland
penetration. The 760 RCN outlet gets heard all over the place, at least well
into the Midwest when aurora suppresses WJR. I think that's the only South
American I bagged on numerous business trips to El Paso, TX in 1986 and 1987.
In '86 with a Walkman on a flight over Dallas-Fort Worth I did get 800 PJB
blasting over XEROK. I guess Bonaire counts as South America. Colin mentioned
Caracas. 750 is the biggie there. The other often-good Venezuelan (at least
here) is Radio Coro on 780, a station that frequently ID's in a boisterous
fashion that cuts through the crud.

Richard Wood in HI did pretty well to targets on the western coast of South
America - Ecuador, Peru, Chile, etc. - including stations uncommon in the
eastern states. But again we're talking water path, just a reverse-TP one. So
his old logs (in old DX Monitors?), besides likely showing a lot of gone-dark
stations / splits, may not be all that useful to DXers in Seattle etc. in 2016.

My "two cents." I'm always surprised at how auroras are not usually a cause
for great DX enthusiasm out west and that so little non-Mexico Latin American
activity is ever reported even with probably 4 times as many active DXers out
there as compared to the northeastern USA and adjacent Canadian provinces.
(And you guys are often running better antennas.)

Mark Connelly, WA1ION
South Yarmouth, MA

<<
I remember that! And I have been thinking about it all week.

If you are Mark Connelly living on the east coast and have a water path to
Brazil it is a breeze, No so much for the rest of us!

In the 70's (and living in Victoria B.C. on the West coast) I heard
Colombia on 810 one night when KGO was off for service.

The only other, I think, was Caracas - cannot remember the frequency.

Nick Hall-Patch has heard Ecuador on 760 Khz (which may be a good bet
still...) and he will jump in if I flubbed the frequency.

It is 25kw during the night and 100kw during the day - so it offers one of
the best bets.

Heck, if I can hear a 5 KW New Zealand station (I know, across water and
all...) then something from S.A. must be possible.

Jump in anyone!

PJB on 800 khz almost counts as a domestic! :-)

They used to come in, during the 80's, at such goofy levels you would swear
they were a domestic.

And, of course, Cuba is a no brainer on medium wave (530 khz) which also (I
think) has Turks and Caicos on it -
that is, at times, in Victoria B.C. Canada car radio level on the west
coast.

Yea, so I guess there is more to choose from when hunting international
stations within the continents.

Venezuela is probably best on 750, but also 770 and 780. Those would
probably be the easiest SA countries from Oklahoma. Another option would be
PJB-800 which also counts as SA.

Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/3/16

2016-10-03 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
The '70s were another time for sure. Partly it was that the clears
hadn't broken down completely, and that there were split channels
like 655 and 725, but conditions were just different. 830 was the
Ecuadorian I remember best, Huancavilca, and it was in regularly for
a year or two.

But Colombia wasn't too unusual. Venezuela was tougher but not
impossible. Surinam 725 benefited from the split frequency. Don't
recall any beyond that in South America, though I think Bruce Portzer
and/or Phil Bytheway heard Argentina and Chile also. But those were
likely on long-dead clear channels.

best wishes,

Nick

Nick Hall-Patch has heard Ecuador on 760 Khz (which may be a good bet

It is 25kw during the night and 100kw during the day - so it offers one of
the best bets.

Re: [IRCA] Puyalluo, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-4

2016-10-03 Thread R. Colin Newell
Conditions in Victoria were exactly like Gary described - my session was
from 1315 to 1330 (no dedication whatsoever...)
and it was an immensely watered down version of yesterday with the
exception of some perkier signals on one, maybe
two of the NHK gunners.

The bonus was (yesterday I sweetened and heightened the flags and moved
the VACTROL terminations to better spots on the antenna masts)
hets on 621, 639, 729, etc that were likely DU.

612 Brisbane sounded fair to midland during the session but did not have
the spritz that it did yesterday.

While watching the NHP fish barrel from the shower (doesn't everyone try to
DX from the shower?) I noticed a LSR surge
at around 1400 - 1410 where some secondary Japanese signals (like 1287)
started munching the domestic scenery...
OC on 1098 was at epic levels and some of the traditional DU channels lit
up a tad. Keep in mind that this was just observation of a computer
screen.

But like Gary said, it was kind of a pooped out session - a little flat...
like Donald Trump's hair less the mousse, gel and styling.

This morning's featurette - all 2 minutes worth -

[IRCA] New 1566 kHz Pulse Jammer Identified

2016-10-03 Thread d1028gary
Thanks to Mauno Ritola and the NEABI for their investigation of the new 1566
kHz pulse jammer on HLAZ's signal during the Japanese service from 1230-1300
UTC.

According to the NEABI this is clearly a North Korean jammer, with a sound
signature identical to that of the jammer used against 1467-KBS in Mokpo, South
Korea. Although I have only received this jammer signal during HLAZ's Japanese
service, the NEABI says that the jammer presumably is on 24 hours a day,
jamming all of HLAZ's programs.

So although this is a rather strange new TP, I suppose it will become a primary
target among DXers here in North America. This was its "buzzing bee" signal as
received at 1254 UTC on September 24 (the strongest reception yet here),
interfering with HLAZ's Japanese service.

[IRCA] Puyalluo, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-4

2016-10-03 Thread d1028gary
In comparison with yesterday Asian signals took a nosedive this morning, with
only a few big gun TP's managing to show up. And of those, only 1566-HLAZ
sounded very healthy, prior to a dreary sunrise enhancement.

First band check at 1250 revealed only a couple of Korean big guns on 972 and
1566 having fair to good audio, with the NHK regulars all down in the noise.
1566-HLAZ had some very good peaks just prior to 1300 but soon fizzled with the
daylight, along with 972-HLCA. The Japanese big guns on 594, 693 and 1287 could
