Re: [IRCA] [mw-dx] 780.64 carrier in Central Ontario

2018-09-12 Thread Eric Floden
We have done 2 round trips in the past 2 years, Vancouver-Ottawa-Vancouver
(and again next month), and l recall 2 AM channels had loud scan-stopping
OCs. I made a note but cannot find the note, or recall.

One was in 780 to 880 range, the other 980 to 1130.

This somewhere (more than twice) between SSM and Dryden Ont, with Forester

Subject: CONVENTION INTENTION

This is an unofficial request for planning information, generated as a result
of the 2018 DX Convention in St. Charles MO.

If you couldn't make St. Charles, your response to the following queries will
help future planning, so please respond; either via this reflector, or
privately to me if you wish.

But DO reply! A poor response to this inquiry will be a signal in itself, so
please take 24 seconds to answer this. All you have to do is return this
e-mail, listing the relevant numbers below. E-mails sent off-reflector to me
will be tallied but kept private.

THANKS!

Mark Durenberger

WHY I COULDN'T MAKE THE DX CONVENTION (Pick all appropriate numbers in your
response):

1) I made no plans to attend because:

1A I'm frankly tired of conventions.

1B Couldn't allocate the travel/lodging cost.

1C Didn't see anything on the program that would attract me.

1D Technical programs have nothing new of interest.

1E Tours offer nothing new of interest.

1F Didn't know about the convention.

1G Found out about it too late to make plans.

1H Heard it was an "IRCA" convention and I didn't make it because I'm not an
IRCA member.

1J I'm not a member of any DX club and didn't think I could just show up.

1K It's a bad time of year for a convention.

1L I knew about it but didn’t know what was planned for this year.

1M My further thoughts:

2) I was going to be there but:

2A Circumstances caused me to cancel my plans.

2B I forgot about it and didn’t see any reminders.

2C I was told by someone it wouldn’t be worth it.

2D My further thoughts:

THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSES!

2018-09-12 Thread Stephen Hawkins

Kraig,

104.5 in Des Moines is "Pure Oldies" but I don't think they simulcast on
an AM frequency.  At least not that I know of.

Wish they ran more power I can't hear them up here.

They don’t have pure oldies 104.5 ... It’s just an Fm Translator fed by an

The nearest 1320 is not owned by Saga, which owns 104.5

Now that Tonga appears to have extended their schedule on 1017kHz we’re able to

One is English news at sometime before 1245utc:

This is from Grayland, WA on August 9. I’m not sure it’s a daily feature.

Bingo, have our answer. WAGY Forest City, NC. "True Oldies 107.5". Facebook
page indicates they are oldies, and not country as some online directories
have them.

Thank you to John Clampett on the MWDX NRC Facebook page for the suggestion!

Re: [IRCA] 558-Fiji and 1017-Tonga Rock Rockwork

2018-09-12 Thread Guy Atkins
Hi Gary,

Thanks for sharing these superb recordings. We are really blessed to live
within driving distance of such a unique DXing spot as the Rockwork cliffs!

I found your August 8th, 1304 UTC recordings of 1017 kHz to be very
insightful. The hot rodded D-808 is highly competitive; but on close
inspection of the stand-alone D-808's recording versus the 17-inc FSL
boosted one, you can clearly hear the benefits of the extra "oomph". For
instance, the 2KY Australian is much clearer and crisper to my
ears--despite being in the background--with the FSL's help. Review the
~00:15-00:18 seconds segment on both MP3s and it's especially noticeable.

[IRCA] Thank you for the Rick Herald award

2018-09-12 Thread Brandon Jordan
To IRCA members, Bruce P just let me know I was honored with the Rick
Herald Award. Thank you, that is kinda crazy.

I received this award because:

*According to the nomination, you received it for your work as DXWW editor:
"Brandon combined the East and West DX Worldwide columns in DX Monitor,
allowing him to become the Editor of the new column without doubling the
workload of his previous “job” editing the East column, and has since run
the combined column very successfully. He has also encouraged members to
submit logging directly to him, rather than going through the IRCA’s
message list."*

So I have a challenge for our esteemed west coast DX'ers, please take East
Coast Master DXer Mark Connelly's example to heart, and submit logs
(hopefully formatted to make it easy for your editor but I will work with
what you send) directly to me.

Thanks guys!

73,

Re: [IRCA] 558-Fiji and 1017-Tonga Rock Rockwork

2018-09-12 Thread Gary DeBock
Thanks Guy,

Your comments on the Rockwork recordings are greatly appreciated!

<<< I found your August 8th, 1304 UTC recordings of 1017 kHz to be very

As you might guess, it was a real blast making that relative strength recording
of 1017-Tonga on the hot-rodded D-808 and the 17" FSL antenna! I should have
asked Craig B. to tune in 1017 on his 3.5" Baby FSL at the time, then we would
have had a three way runoff :-)

As you noticed, the 17" FSL does make a big difference with weak DU signals,
and on days when the propagation is modest you might feel pretty challenged
chasing DU's with a hotrod On days of superb propagation, though, the 7.5"
loopstick D-808 could track down a very good variety of Kiwis, Aussies and
Tonga.-- although generally at pretty modest signal levels. The Rockwork DU
propagation is certainly enhanced, but places that are completely surrounded by
salt water (like Aitutaki in the Cook Islands) are definitely the best for
these kind of 7.5" loopstick portables. The ocean-boosted propagation kicks in,
and long range signals are almost never too weak-- there are just too many of
them to sort out. 90% of the DX during that trip was made with only a
hot-rodded Skywave SSB model, including 1000-Radio Record in Brazil.

I'm very glad to hear that you are taking the plunge!

As far as I know, only Steve R. and I have built the Longwave version of the
7.5" loopstick D-808. It's fun for travel DXing, but it isn't exactly all I
would want to take to the ocean coast to chase South Pacific NDB's. A portable,
live-DXing Longwave radio is never going to come away with as many overall
NDB's as an SDR, but a sizable Longwave FSL can make it competitive on single
frequencies. Last month Tom R. came away with 55 South Pacific Longwave NDB's
at the Rockwork ocean cliff (a west coast record), while I came away with 1
(260-NF).

Congratulations on winning the Rich Heald Award!!!

To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America
Subject: [IRCA] Thank you for the Rick Herald award

Brandon

[IRCA] Newfoundland DXpedition recordings

2018-09-12 Thread Chuck Hutton
I'm not quite as enthusiastic as most about sending links to SDR recordings
because:

(1) on an email list like this, the email is out of site when fresh emails
flood in. Who can find the email with the link a month later?

(2) Not so many people have SDR software to play the files.

#1: I canlt solve thism and can only hope some day the list moves to a group
oriented platform like groups.io where we can share documents, recordings,
photos that live in an archive space.

#2: To avoid this problem, I sometimes make "movies" that have audio clips,
titles for each clip and a short explanation.

Here is one such movie. Be advised it is 1 GB so go read War and Peace while
downloading.

I could not agree more.
Lots and lots of great links exist for many catches but with no central
repository, they are forgotten over time... and...

I created such a group a year ago: mw...@groups.io

And Chuck, you are a member/owner of that group. :-)

It was time to have a space with some elbow room.

It was NOT meant to replace this list or IRCA in general but give people some
modern tools — a complement to IRCA if anything.

We have 43 sign-ups which was not the amount that I anticipated one year later
but conversations are taking place.

[IRCA] Michigan DUs, Sept.12th 2018

2018-09-12 Thread Tim Tromp
Sunrise this morning: 11:21 UTC

594 under light domestic slop with very faint talk by OM & YL, interview
style, with this format fitting 3WV's schedule & podcast at 11:22 UTC. Too
faint for me to log it, but I'm calling it a strong "tentative" right now.
Audio gone by 11:25 UTC. If 3WV in Western Victoria, this would be my
furthest MW DX at 9,862 miles (15,871 km). Hopefully I get another chance
at this one.

612 had a fair signal (for Michigan) this morning with weak but continuous
audio starting just before 11:00 UTC. If not for the heavy domestic slop
from 610, this would have been a fantastic reception. Typically here, DU's
peak just as the domestics start to fade out at sunrise. This peak period,
at the lower end of the band, is usually short-lived and only lasts for a
few minutes. 612 was different this morning, peaking early and lasting for
about 20 minutes with continuous (but still faint) audio. Presumed 4QR
with DU accented YLs talking. Carrier finally faded completely at 11:40
UTC.

Aside from the typical weak carriers at the lower end of the band, nothing
else interesting noted.
