[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 1 November 2018

2018-11-01 Thread Nigel Pimblett
No significant TAs to derail my report tonight, so here's what was heard
this morning in southern Alberta. The big surprise was a huge signal
from CNR11 on 1098. Overall it was definitely the best Chinese morning
of the season. The Japanese were rather lacklustre today, other than
the big guns. Most of the activity occurred midband from about 800-1200

567 JOIKSapporo, JAPAN Weak, with traces of talk, and NHK pips at 1400

819	KCBS	N.KOREA Woman singing ('patriotic' no doubt) operatic style
vocal at 1245

837 unIDTraces of man talking at 1354. Seemed Chinese.

864 HLKRS.KOREATalk by man, musical bridge at 1311.

945 CNR1Music at 1359, woman and man in Chinese, them 5+1 time pips

954 JOKRTokyo, JAPANWoman in Japanese at 1312

963 CRI Man in Russian at 1346

981 CNR1Man in Chinese at 1336.

1017CRI Woman talking in Korean at 1347, CRI theme music at 1400.

1044CRI CHINA Weak, with woman in Japanese at 1331

1089	unID	Man in Chinese at 1338, fair level at times. Guessing
Lianoning as heard years back. Another station was audible underneath
at times.

1098 - CNR11	Golmud, CHINAFirst noted faint singing at 1223, up to
good level by 1242 with vocal by man. //SW freqs and Indian SDR

https://www.dropbox.com/s/cn43dvg74y8h6zy/1098_20181101_1257.mp3?dl=0

1098	unID	a second station with talk began mixing with CNR11 just after
1400.

1107	unID	Talk by woman at 1347, and song by a woman. Too weak to ID
language but didn't seem Chinese/Japanese/Korean.	5+1 pips at 1400

11164BC Brisbane, AUSTRALIA Talk by usual host at 1308

1134unIDTraces of man talking at 1354

1170	KJNP	North Pole, AK ID just past 1400, mixing with presumed KBS
World Radio

1205.96 Yanbian, CHINA Woman talking in Korean at 1329.

Re: [IRCA] October 18-31 AM loggings - Davenport, IA logbook

2018-11-01 Thread Rick Dau
Neil --

Here's the email I received on October 11 from Allen Kiddoo, KT0TT, operator
of the Muscatine SDR:

"I started out with an untuned 26' dipole, which was fair on 20 and 40
meters but poor on 80 meters or lower. About 2 weeks ago, I changed to a home
made active loop. It is a hula hoop spiral wrapped with 1/2" wide copper tape.
Total length of tape would be about 20'. Loop is connected to a 30db amp with
balance-wound balun. Loop is about 5' above ground in side yard. 55' of RG6u
runs back to the Kiwi. Cost to build the loop was less than $20."

I asked Allen if he had plans to upgrade to an antenna that would better
receive AM and longwave, since I've noticed that there's a lot of noise on the
lower end of the AM band (from about 800 Khz) on down and quite a bit on LW.
He said he's constantly experimenting and hopes to come up with something
that'll eliminate much, if not all, of the buzz. I'm hopeful, since I've spent
a LOT of time on it in the past month.

   Incidentally, its URL is http://www.kt0tt.dynu.net:8073

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Booming Chinese for 11-1

2018-11-01 Thread Gary DeBock
Wow, with propagation like this at home a trip to Hawaii seems almost
absurd! Thanks to Ken in Lummi Island for his report confirming the
exceptional conditions. The Chinese wave which had been hitting this area at
unusual strength for the past week became a huge tsunami this morning--
bringing salt water-type conditions. Several second tier Chinese frequencies
like 756, 837 and 936 hit S9 levels, while regulars like 639 and 738 were at
absurd strength. The entire wacky situation was like the final stunning bonus
in a one week propagation bonanza.

The tiny 5" FSL and hot-rodded Ultralight were once again set up at 1330
in the local park, with hopes that yesterday's sudden Chinese propagation
collapse was only an aberration. The S9 peaks of the CRI stations on 963, 1017
and 1044 in the predawn darkness were reassuring, and some second tier
frequencies like 837 and 963 were also reaching S9 peaks prior to 1400. When
daybreak occurred around 1410 the 756-CNR1 (poorly coordinated) synchros went
on a monster romp, hitting S9 peaks with their reverb effect. 837-China
(Harbin?) started pounding in at S9 strength (in and out) for a full 20 minutes
with Chinese rock starting at 1415, and was probably the overall star of the
wild session. Traces of audio began showing up on 783 as well around 1425,
reaching a very good level with Chinese opera around 1435-- just like it did in
Hawaii last December, only this time with an apparent Chinese co-channel, that
never had shown up in Kona. The floodgates were now open, with the CRI
stations, 639-CNR1, 738-BEL2 and others on monstrous romps. 675 had YL audio
at 1445 that sounded like the VOV recordings made here years ago, while both
684 and 927 were at threshold audio levels. Chinese audio was still hanging
around at the 1500 TOH here-- an unprecedented breakthrough at this mediocre
location No doubt Nick, Walt and Colin had TP audio as late as 1600 in salt
water-enhanced Victoria this morning, but I wonder who had more fun? :-)

756 CNR1 Chinese female speech //639 with awesome echo effect at 1410; best
signal ever here https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/4maczz39wavknc2szcpenu2p0ukam51q

783 China Chinese opera at full Hawaii strength at 1436, with apparent
Chinese co-channel as well
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/b5rwkm60qq7dkdfwqn3lb88bppo6m9ry

837 China (Harbin?) Chinese rock music at powerful level around 1425-- one
of the overall stars of the wild session

Hi Ken, I'd think a DKAZ aimed NW for TP and another one aimed NNE for TA's
would serve you well. That fence does sound unfortunate. How high is it?

Phasing smaller antennas or phasing two Pixel loops could be quite helpful
and maybe you could arrange them broadside to get a more narrow beam, or
from what you dimensions sound to me, end fire to get better F/B and a
somewhat more narrow beam.

73 and good luck .. KAZ

2018-11-01 Thread ken brookner

Hi Neil...

Thanks!

I do have room, more or less.  I try to keep my receive antennas
separated from the transmit ones.  I have ~200' across the back (north
side) of the property..  that's 200' east to west.  Surrounded by tall
alders. Unfortunately for antennas, there's a woven wire fence that
runs around the property.  ~627' N/S...

I have my 2 active vertical antennas that i phase separated by 135'
back in that wooded area and they work fine for 160 meters and up some
(marginally effective on BCB).  They're far enough away from the
fencing that they aren't impacted much.  I think a DKAZ would be since
it would have to be proximate to that fence, perhaps elevated above
it..  There are probably other options.  Flags would be easier to fit in.

The PIxel Tech loop is at the southwest end of the property with nulls
north and south.  I have another one and I thought I might try phasing
them.

From 1345 through top of the hour, things were in pretty good shape still

1179 CHINA Hubei RGD. Nov 1 1356 – At chunky levels and still
audible on Honda Civic car radio when pulling into University of

This was something of a glimpse, a skim, a snapshot of this morning -
what's clear is: This has been a good season. It's been an interesting
season. We have been getting way more

than just coastal Japanese and Korean stations showing up at our
antennas - this is deep continental penetration. One can only imagine
some of the stuff that

is surfacing at the coveted coastal locations and in Hawaii (Good luck Gary!)

I'm holding out for a single Philippines station but will accept
something more exotic.

Very nice. I wonder how the two Tims did for Asia this morning? I didn't
have anything here in IL on the west DKAZ that I could specifically pin
down as Asian. I did catch a couple low band "usual" 50 kW Aussies weakly
but good enough to tell was DU talk for my first ever Aussies logged in
November. They can really spike stronger right around my sunrise.

As for Golmud 1098, I per EZNEC am losing about 11.5 dB in their direction
compared to what a north DKAZ of the same size would deliver. All the
supports are in for my north DKAZ, but I still have to wire it up.
I had more tree trimming to do yesterday to prepare for installation than
expected and since I am back at work, I don't expect to have this usable
until Saturday.

[IRCA] 1098

2018-11-01 Thread Nigel Pimblett
