I watch almost daily for 'the trace' on the Perseus screen when I get up and
only a few times per season does it ever get 'dark' enough to tempt me to start

Difference is I'm in Virginia vs. Alberta or Grayland. ;-)

2011-05-23 Thread Bill Whitacre
I'm in St. Louis with our oldest son, bringing our van here for him to use over
the summer during an internship at Brownshoe Company.

Had a pretty decent storm blow through around lunch time. I watched a flatbed
of drywall literally blow away, into the street - Forrest Lane - at a big
construction project across the street from my hotel on the Central West End.

You'all have some pretty decent storms out here compared to we DC folks!

What happened Joplin though is really horrific!

I've had a really hard time with CA here in Alexandria, VA too -- some peeps
out of KFI in a pile of 'stuff' on 640 and not much else UNTIL ... I started
working with a phased BOG system, as designed by Neil Kazaross.

Most weekend nights now I drive our van over to a field behind the local rec
center - Chinquapin - near T.C. Williams HS, park in my favorite spot and run a
pair of wires out on the ground at around 230 deg az -- 500 // 380 feet. Hook
'em up to a quantum phasor, null WBZ, set up Perseus for TOH recording and ...

http://realmonitor.com/chinquapin/110416/KNZR.wav

Granted, this was only one night out of about a dozen but I also get much
better reception of Mexican stations using this BOG system than 'at home' about
a half-mile away using a 4-element Wellbrook array.

I've met some real interesting people DXing this way too! ;-)

Re: [IRCA] 30 years of skywave DXing

2011-04-14 Thread Bill Whitacre
I don't usually go in for the 'look back' stuff ... I must be 'getting old' as
this thread has 'sucked me in.'

I got 'hooked' on DXing one night in 1968 when my dad brought home the
Nems-Clarke field strength meter he used at the radio station he was CE for,
WILS in Lansing, MI.

Not only could we HEAR DX but we could measure its 'field strength.'

As we stood in the basement, him showing me how it worked, we heard an ID on
640 for KFI ... and the ever-present interference from Cuba co-channel. I got
pretty excited and wrote for a QSL. Some time later one arrived -- a typed
letter from KFI's CE with a DX-stamp attached explaining about the Cuban
station and international radio agreements, etc.

My interest grew from there -- begging my dad to do a 'proof of performance'
test so I could stay up and watch [not realizing that he didn't arrange those,
the FCC did and they were never welcomed], letting me push 'the button' to
change from day to night power/pattern or reading any request for QSLs they
received at the station.

Years later, as I stood in a field in Belize with a Potomac Instruments FIM-41
trying to get a reading on a Guatemala City AM station via ground wave I
thought about by dad. The 'radio gene' had been safely and securely passed on.

Unfortunately, I am the last generation of 'radiomen' in my family. Times have
changed and I gather so has the commercial radio industry - probably several
times since the 'family owned', 'top 40' station my dad worked for got sold to
new owners more than once over the years.

I don't regret the experience or time spent 'at the dials.' I never have to
worry about having a hobby when I retire as long as someone is still
broadcasting.

[IRCA] 693 in DC

2010-11-09 Thread Bill Whitacre
Around 1027utc this morning I got first audio of the season on an OTP [over the
pole] TP. 639kHz with woman in what sounds like an English lesson:

http://realmonitor.com/stations/japan-693a.wav

Other carriers on 945, 873, 774 and 747 but 693 was definitely the best this
morning.

Have to listen to the Perseus wav's some more tonight as there might be audio
on 945 too.

[IRCA] OTPTP in DC

2010-10-01 Thread Bill Whitacre
First of the season over-the-pole [OTP] TP 'traces' this morning just before
sunrise -- 747, 873 and particularly 945kHz -- in the north-facing array.

Screen dumps from around 1035utc here:

945 almost reached audio level at my fairly noisy QTH.

[IRCA] VOA Sao Tome last night

2010-09-25 Thread Bill Whitacre
While some friends are enjoying the exotic DX possible in Masset I'm stuck here
at home in Alexandria, VA. Last night saw pretty decent TA reception so I left
the Perseus recording across the 0300 utc TOH and caught my first logging of
VOA Sao Tome on 1530kHz with Yankee Doodle under WCKY!

http://realmonitor.com/stations/stp-1530.wav

Kind of special for me as I visited the site on Sao Tome while we were still
negotiating for a relay station there. It's one of the last IBB MW outlets I
hadn't heard from somewhere far away -- most from here in suburban DC ...
except for 1575 Thailand which I had to go to Grayland to hear.

Watching 'ghost traces' flow down [or up] the Perseus screen on 1548, 1566 and
1611kHz this morning before sunrise in the hope - perhaps in vain - of some
audio!

It's the 'hope' that keeps you going in this hobby.

Re: [IRCA] This morning's DU chase from IL

2010-09-09 Thread Bill Whitacre
I can't compete with Kaz BOGs this far east but yesterday morning was one of
the best for my long-standing daily attempt to get audio out of 738 -- right at
sunrise too.

After seeing Neil's email I went back through the Perseus recording at the time
738 was best -- around 1035utc -- and found 'traces', some VERY weak, on:

702
738
819
846
1512
1548

I use Guy Atkin's suggested 'reverse x-ray' palette to aid in 'seeing'
potential signals.

Screen shots of the above are here:

http://realmonitor.com/DUTP.html

None of these produced any audio. 738 was closest and in USB or LSB one can
tell there is modulation but not that it's male or female voice or what
language is being spoken. :-(

Someday though ...

[IRCA] Benin 1566

2010-02-08 Thread Bill Whitacre
TA's aren't what they were during the fall but 'gems' can still be had.

Last night, while testing out a new VSPE/Perseus Recording Scheduler [PRS]
config I made a TOH recording of the band at 0300utc with the Wellbrook array
'pointing' east.

Other than some slow-fade signals on 1431, 1512, 1521, 1548 and 1575 there
wasn't much special until I got to 1566 where I found a pretty good carrier, a
short guitar IS and English/French ID for TWR Benin:

http://realmonitor.com/stations/benin-1566.wav

This despite the Wellbrook array being buried in at least 30 of snow in
various parts of our yard and the east element buried in a 4 hedge FULL of
snow along our driveway -- including the base unit! Amazing!

All this only works when/if you have power though ... which we didn't for about
12 hours on Saturday.

Neither do I Nick. That's why I plotted them -- to see if any of them or some

2009-12-16 Thread Bill Whitacre
That's a really GOOD day here out east Bill! ;-)

And it wouldn't be at 1421utc either -- subtract about 3 or 4 hours.

Today saw a return of some weak 'traces' ... as I call the ghostly vertical
lines that fall from the top of a Perseus waterfall graph.

945 873 were the 'best' with some brief periods of 747, 828 and 972.

It never ceases to amaze me how these traces go from totally absent to near
audio in a very short time and then back down again. Nothing near audio level
today and none of them would even be 'visible' without the 'Zoom' scale on the
Persues.

Have been 'tracking' 738 for a couple of months. It comes in best when
'pointing' west whereas the other Asian TPs come in best north. I'll bet it's
Tahiti but I've been unable to get any audio so far. I sure hope it doesn't
turn out to be a 'phantom' signal, produced locally, as I have on a few other
freqs.

[IRCA] TPs in DC

2009-12-11 Thread Bill Whitacre
After TiVOing and listening live for TPs since the last 'window on Asia' back
on Nov. 19th, yesterday saw more than tempting, whispery, ghost-like vertical
traces running down the Perseus screen.

774kHz produced enough 'oomph' to give a little audio, albeit barely above
'imagination level' at ~0930utc:

http://realmonitor.com/stations/japan-774-091210-0927ut.wav

[female voice in what sure sounds like Japanese to me deep in the noise]

The pattern seems to have changed a bit in that the best signals are 'early',
shortly after Asian sunset rather than just before ECNA sunrise.

With that in mind, last night I set the Persues to record the whole band
starting at 0750utc [sunrise for Tokyo is about 0715utc or so]. Unfortunately,
I forgot to switch the antenna to 'North' and wasted the first hour or so until
I got up around 0840utc.

Since then I've been watching [listening?] to some decent traces on 774, 747,
828, 972, 945 and this morning's 'star' 873kHz.

Won't know if I have any audio 'til reviewing 'the tapes' but even 'chasing
traces' is fun!

[IRCA] TP DC DX - Nov. 14, 2009

2009-11-14 Thread Bill Whitacre
I don't keep a blog or diary, but if I did, this would be my 'DX' entry for
today:

Nov. 14, 2009

TPs were not as good this morning as they'd been for the past few days.
LatAms were nothing special either.

[Gotta figure out a way to use on-line geomagnetic indices to learn what to
'expect' on any given day.]

Very weak 'traces' from 0845utc on; 747, 774, 873, 945 and 1098kHz -- I
finally figured out how to put these in the Perseus memory now.

Finally, around 1050utc, got near some audio on 747 - recorded. Everything
on the north beam gone by 1120utc or so.

Something odd on 738kHz. Trying to null 'AM 740' at some point I noticed a
'polar-flutter-trace' on 738. It was barely visible on the north beam --
it came in best on the WEST beam!

Recorded at 1130utc or so - doubt there's any audio ... but while the
north-facing TP stuff was gone by 1120utc, the 738kHz outlet continued on
'til past 1145utc when 'local' on 730 either signed on or went to full
power.

It was as if 738 were coming from Asia but from further south than Japan,
Korea and China, skirting the auroral donut.

Every 'session' has a silver lining and sometimes a 'mystery' is as good as
something new -- gives you something to think about for the rest of the day
and look forward to solving tomorrow.

Oh yea, also had KFI on 640kHz with audio // web-feed and TWR via Albania
on 1394.82kHz last night -2200*.

2009-11-14 Thread Bill Whitacre
I thought about that but got confused about which side of the terminator Tahiti
was on.

Now I see that 6am EDT is about 1am TAHT -- plenty dark.

Perhaps the rising K index moves the 'openings' south ... just like here during
auroral cx?

Hmmm ... if this is how one learns and remembers things, I like it!

I'm going to watch 738 from now on ... and go back and look/listen to my wav

[IRCA] TPs yet again -- best morning yet in DC

2009-11-11 Thread Bill Whitacre
After the TAs faded out, the TPs faded in! [ I've always wanted to say that! ]

Still digging for some audio on 945 and 873kHz, but finally got audio on 747
and 774kHz -- not as good as Bruce Conti's sample, but still ...

747kHz, female in JJ:
http://realmonitor.com/stations/japan-747.wav

774kHz, male in JJ, not as 'strong' as 747:
http://realmonitor.com/stations/japan-774.wav

[ this one's approaching what Ed Shaw used to call 'imagination level
modulation.' I had better audio but having to crank in a file name when doing
'live' Perseus recording delays things just enough to miss things like ...
audio on TPs! ]

747 and 774kHz were just 'traces' on the waterfall until about 1100utc, then
peaked around 1120utc and were still 'visible' as traces at 1145utc -- past
sunrise.

945, 873 and 828kHz were steady but weak traces early on [0900utc] and 'peaked'
earlier ... around 1015utc. I may have audio on one or more of these, not
sure. All those hours spent listening to CNR programming on top of VOA Chinese
in hotel rooms across China may come in handy!

More later ... there were 'traces' on the Perseus waterfall on several other
freqs in the 700-950kHz range between 11-1130utc.

[IRCA] TPs again

2009-11-10 Thread Bill Whitacre
This morning [10/10] I had 'traces' of various strengths on the Perseus
waterfall graph in 'zoom' setting on; 594, 693, 747, 774, 828, 837 and 1134kHz.
945 was the most 'consistent' but 747 had the best shot at providing any audio
-- despite horrible 'splash' from an over-modulated and non-limited 'AM 740.'

I started listening at 0920utc with a peak in 747's 'trace' at 1010 and around
11ut.

I doubt that I have any audio but I've yet to review a 1000utc TOH recording.

I finally figured out how to take a screen shot on a PC [on a Mac it's easy ...
of course] and will post a link to that when I get to the office.

We hear it sometimes when we have feed problems on VOA/RFE/RFA
programs at

work. It's not funny then. ;-)

[IRCA] A little nostalgia

2008-09-07 Thread Bill Whitacre
I was cleaning out the basement awhile back and found a bunch of reel-
to-reel tapes and some logbooks from the early 70's.

Rather than throw them all away, I digitized the tapes and using the
logbooks am editing stuff into sound bytes.

The results [still in progress] can be found here:

http://realmonitor.com/dx.php

What you will find is mostly domestic AM stations' sign/ons, sign/offs
and tests logged between 1971-1976 from Lansing, MI.

Enjoy!

Re: [IRCA] VOA Poro

 Charlie,

San Fernando is located on the West Coast of Luzon, and separated by

There are a few exceptions but not many.

I gather you'all know Poro isn't on 1143 or 1147.5kHz any more? It's
now on 1170 and been there for a couple of years or more.

Besides that, assuming that the path via which you might hear stuff
from Poro is over the Pacific Ocean, then one reason you're not
hearing it is that it beams either due west [262 degrees] or nearly
due north [332 degrees]. Neither of those is going to shove much in
your direction and I'm not convinced that the 332 degree beam
actually 'works' anyway.

Re: [IRCA] Old timers question abour 1180

2006-10-18 Thread Bill Whitacre
Thanks all.

If got 'hold of George Jacobs yesterday. He was involved in both the
original 1180 selection for VOA Marathon and the 'Marti-izing' of the
site in '85.

He relayed that work began on VOA Marathon in 1962, after the 'Cuban
missle crisis.' So that it was on-air in '64 is about right.

I recall visiting the site in '84 or so and it looked like something
'temporary' that was made permanent later on. We have other relay
stations like that in VOA's network.

Does anybody recall the legal/FCC battles that surrounded VOA's
selection of 1180kHz? Much like the 530kHz Marti stuff, I'm sure FCC
finds itself in a tough position since IBB [ne USIA] is a separate
member of IRAC.

Sorry I don't have the '64 and '65 issues to confirm when these
 stations
first showed up in print. Hope this helps.

Since I know I heard both in 1964 or early 1965, this suggests an
original air date in late 1963 or 1964... I'd forgotten about the
debate back then as to where 1040 was, and can't recall if it was said
at the time that it actually moved from one to the other or if it was
 originally mis-identified.

[IRCA] Old timers question abour 1180

2006-10-17 Thread Bill Whitacre
My colleagues at Radio Marti like to think that jamming began with them!

Can someone pls remind me when VOA started using 1180 in Marathon
Key, FL?

Was it co-channeled by the Cubans prior to Marti?

Thanks.
