Re: [IRCA] WABC 770 transmitter anomaly

2014-07-11 Thread Brandon

Hi Sylvain,

Thanks, I will take a look again this evening. Perhaps they fixed it or it may
just be that itn't as noticeable in a real time waterfall, except that you
would see WABC slowly drifting. I discovered this a few nights ago when I
noticed that WABC was quite a bit off frequency, and while I was measuring the
off-set I noticed the drifting and a few minutes later heard a loud crackling
noise and found the carrier had jumped down to the lower offset. Only after
setting up the overnight waterfall recording did the unusual drifting pattern
become evident.

Brandon

I don't see any kind of artifact here tonight on 770 when zooming in
with my Perseus.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] TA signals into western TN this evening

2014-08-07 Thread Brandon
Hi Neil. Yes, this is with the SAL-30. The Shared Apex Loop has 8
selectable directional lobes, each with excellent front/back and
front/side performance. It is rather amazing in operation, there are oft
times one can have 3 and even 4 stations on a single channel each
selectable by pushing a button.

[IRCA] Call for DX Test Ephemera

2014-08-25 Thread Brandon

Dear NRC and IRCA members--

Greetings from your new DX Test Coordinator. I believe we have been
without any DX Test coordination for a few years, so do not expect too
much this first year. Notice the Coordinator title, no more Chairmen. My
sole experience at this, besides being a consumer of DX Tests, is
hosting the hosting the old DXTests.Info web site. No miracles happening
here, at least without YOUR help. I am working on the following media:

Web site: http://dxtests.net/
Twitter: @AMDXTests
Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/AM-Radio-DX-Tests/237526606438016 (please
like)

Now that is out of the way... I am looking for a few things:

1. Most importantly, volunteers to reach out to your CE contacts to set
up tests, duh.

2. Historical IRCA/NRC DX Test/CPC brochures/documents/ephemera.
3. DX Test QSL card/letter scans

Regarding #1, rest assured that the person who initiates a test will get
full credit. Too many test credit hijacks have happened in the past
decade to the detriment of everyone chasing DX Tests. That stops here.
You will get kudos for your hard work. Make the initial contact, point
them here for coordination and you will get full credit.

Regarding #2, we need any and all CPC/DX Test documentation. I have
already received some excellent documents from a past CPC/DX Test
Chairman and I know there has to be much more out there. Scan, copy, fax
what ever and send it on. The more we have on the web site, the better
for the folks at the stations to see this is a long tradition and not
some random nonsense.

Regarding #3, not much needs to be said besides scan your QSLs and send
them in. See #2.

Most importantly, I am looking for the past CPC/DX Test
chairman/coordinators to pitch in with your expertise.

73,
Brandon

1565. (surely Benin but very weak, maybe some audio, maybe imaginary)

1566.0001 (no idea)

I've been trying for Benin the past few months but have had nothing more

No good TA opening here the past two nights :(

I've never got why DXers feel the need to police the bands.

[IRCA] WSPO QSL Update

2014-11-22 Thread Brandon Jordan
Hi folks. The snail mail reports are still coming in and I have been
working with the WSPO CE on the QSL for this test. I believe the QSL will
be of a similar format as the nice WCIT QSL from the test last season. Give
us a few more weeks to get it designed and printed. All e-mail-only reports
will receive a scan of the QSL.

We hope to have a another test to announce soon!

[IRCA] WSPO DX Test QSLs

2014-12-15 Thread Brandon Jordan
Hi folks. The QSLs for the WSPO test are out to WSPO CE Bruce tomorrow for
his signature. If everything works out, everyone should receive their QSLs
over the Holidays.

I have had a few nibbles regarding new tests, but no bites. If any of you
folks can reach out and arrange a test with one of your contacts, please
do. We'll handle the coordination and you will get full credit for
arranging!

Re: [IRCA] Multiple Sound Cards for Recording

2015-01-23 Thread Brandon Jordan
I am using three Xonar U7's through the same hub with Windows 7 and not
having an issue. Each external USB sound card is given a different number
in Win 7 (2-Xonar U7, 4-Xonar U7 and 6-Xonar U7 in my case). On my old Win
XP machines I had issues using the same model sound cards, but this seems
to be resolved for me in Win 7.

Re: [IRCA] Multiple Sound Cards for Recording

I have all my audio cards (3 U7 and 4 SB Live) running under one soundcard
dedicated hub (a powered USB3 hub into a USB3 motherboard connection -
even though none of these are USB3 cards :). I don't thing you will have
any issues with a decent USB hub and TR.

Re: [IRCA] Multiple Sound Cards for Recording

2015-01-23 Thread Brandon Jordan
Shouldn't, but who knows. I am surprised all my external cards work great
in a USB3 hub. The hubs I use are:

http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-SuperSpeed-Firmware-Backwards-Compatibility/dp/B008ZGKWQI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1422055515&sr=8-2&keywords=plugable+usb+3+0

I have two of these, the second one hosts a G33DDC, G313e and SDR-IQ along
with 3 Anker USB3 HD caddys I use for SDR recording while keeping one port
left open for a USB thumb drive I keep log data on.

Re: [IRCA] Elad FDM-S2 and a Phaser [Latency Issues]

2015-02-25 Thread Brandon Jordan
I think Les may be saying he is having an issue with the audio latency of
the SDR hampering his efforts to get a perfect null during live listening.
I've not had this issue myself, but one solution could be to use an antenna
splitter so you could use a separate analogue receiver strictly for setting
nulls.

[IRCA] Array Solutions SAL-30

2014-03-13 Thread Brandon Jordan
Hi folks. I just finished up deploying an AS SAL-30 Shared Apex Loop and my
initial observations are that this is by far the best directional antenna
on that I have ever used. My experience with directional antennas over the
years range from small ferrite and wire loops, modest beverages, Wellbrook
K9AY/ALA10/ALA330/DKAZ, phasing various antenna configurations with
Quantum, Connelly DXP5, and currently a DXE NCC-1 with phased active whips.

The SAL-30 is the best MW antenna that I have had the pleasure of using. On
almost every MW channel I can easily have two stations in the clear, and on
many it is no problem receiving 3 or 4 stations. The UNI directional mode
is amazing, with just the push of the Flip switch you generally find
another station totally dominant. I have found the controller with 8
direction switch to be extremely accurate, making it easy to determine
exactly which direction an UnID is arriving from. Another bonus that I
discovered last evening while experiencing quite a bit of lightning static,
when the pattern was pointed north and the static crashes were extremely
subdued to the point of not being an issue.

I have also found the performance up to the spec'd 8 mhz of this model to
be excellent. In these bands I can null some of the CODAR signals way down,
null utes, determine the direction of a weak signal, and significantly peak
a signal for best SNR. This afternoon I found that on many HF DX signals,
the directionality of this antenna was actually useful up to 15 mHz. On
many DX stations bothered by significant long-path echo, I could always
eliminate the LP component. On HF above 8 mHz, the directional pattern does
not appear to be very useful with strong domestic stations such as the
Tennessee SW broadcasters.

So far, I am extremely pleased with the performance of this antenna. I was
initially very concerned with the cost of the antenna vs performance but I
can now say this was money very well spent. One word of caution is
deploying the mast on the SAL-30. This is a task for 3 people minimum, and
on a totally windless day. With two folks we were able to get 8 of the mast
sections up, but had to wait a week to get a third person to help get that
last mast section put in.

If I can master video and youtube over the weekend, I will look at putting
up some MW specific audio/video.

[IRCA] Array Solutions Shared Apex Loop

2014-04-08 Thread Brandon Jordan
I recently reported about the exceptional performance I have experienced
with the AS-SAL-30 loop. I recently deployed an AL-SAL-12 loop and have had
a week to do some comparisons between them on MW.

First of all, comparatively speaking the AS-SAL-30 takes a lot of real
estate. Erecting the mast takes a minimum of 3 people, and took me 2 weeks
to get the manpower assembled for deploying last mast section. The
AS-SAL-12 can be deployed by one person in a small backyard lot.

After a week of A/B comparison from my QTH outside of Memphis, TN,and as
can be expected I can report that the SAL-30 is by and far the better MW
performer. The SAL in general totally outperforms all loops or phased
verticals that I have at my disposal at all frequencies below 15 mhz.

I am a LF/MF/HF DXer, and deployed the SAL-12 for better 8 mHz+ directional
performance and for that purpose it is fantastic. For 15 mHz+ I have found
that the DX Engineering Phased Vertical Array has better performance so am
contemplating converting the SAL-12 to a SAL-20, which is reported to have
a good directional pattern to 15 mHz.

My recommendation for a MW DXer is to only deploy a SAL-12 if you do not
have the real estate for a SAL-20. If you are a LF/MF/HF DXer, the SAL-20
is the best option. If you are a LF/MF DXer and have the room, you simply
cannot go wrong with the SAL-30. It is the best antenna I have used for LF
to 8 mHz. BUT, the SAL-12 will out perform any small antenna,
antenna/phaser combo or K9AY that I have experienced.

Hi Mark. I also use SDR -> Total Recorder for all of my DX recordings.
Do you have any particular reason for using MP3 48kb/24 kHz mono for

curious if this isn't optimum.

[IRCA] WBOB QSL update

2016-01-12 Thread Brandon Jordan
*Update from JD Stephens, the DXer who arranged this widely heard test:*
--
I am already receiving word that some of our DXing brethren are complaining
because the Engineer for the WBOB DX test has not yet responded to their
e-mail reports. Folks, it's ONLY BEEN 3 DAYS since the test occurred.
Please be patient !!

The WBOB Engineer has already e-mailed me and said he will be developing an
e-QSL (this is the only way he will reply), and will send out these e-QSLs
once he feels that all e-mail reports have been received.

This kind gentleman has also offered to work with me and arrange some more
DX tests in the future, but this will not occur if we do not all show a bit
more courtesy and - again - PATIENCE in waiting for our QSLs.

It pains me to have to send this e-mail, but as the arranger of the test, I
not only care about how many of our DXers are able to hear any test, but
also about the courteous broadcast professionals who air these tests out of
the goodness of their hearts.

J.D. Stephens

I do want to add to JD's email that one of my biggest pet peeves on DX
Tests in the past is that the promised QSL's never arrived. As the IRCA/NRC
DX Test Coordinator, this is one of my main functions besides communicating
accurate test info, and one of the main things I wanted to change. Everyone
who submitted an accurate report will be QSl'd.

QSL's will be forthcoming, and if Jerry gets buried under an avalanche of

the IRCA/NRC DX Test team assist.

great. Definitely want to work with you on getting some DX Test content on the

Re: [IRCA] KNX-1070 Heard In Georgia

2016-01-29 Thread Brandon Jordan
I am located west of Memphis, and have semi-local stations 30 miles west of
me on all 3 prime CA frequencies. That being said, I did an overnight SDR
ToH recording with the SAL-30 Loop pointing due West and have been going
through the recordings. I had a decent log of KNX-1070 at 0805 UTC: CBS
News finish, "This is KNX 1070 News Radio. Good morning, I am Mark Austin
Thomas. Here is what is happening at 12:05" followed by weather.

http://swldx.us/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/KNX_1070_0805_29Jan16.mp3

Luckily I am in the null of WDIA-1070 which is 32.4 miles at at 292°, while
KNX is at 275.4°. I have logged a few CA stations when I was DXing
domestics more heavily many years ago, but this is the first one since I
started a new domestic log at this new QTH a few months ago. KFI and KNBR
will be much more problematic. Now I need to find AZ,ID, MT, OR, WA and WY.

If you have to use poles then you may want to consider a DKAZ. Here is a
great article by Mark Durenberger that may be of interest:

I have one of Colin's Vactrol units on the way, it left San Francisco at
noon on yesterday and will hopefully arrive by this weekend. I will be
deploying a 140' DKAZ using the Wellbrook FLG100N and Vactrol.

Colin's Vactrol arrived today. I have a 140' D-KAZ erected point 150/330 and
should have everything connected in the next few hours. I am initially going
with the null at 330 degrees to compare how well the null for Memphis stations
compare to the SAL-30, at least for groundwave, but swapping between 150/330 is
a 5 minute effort.

Re: [IRCA] Super KAZ update

2016-03-19 Thread Brandon Jordan
Hi folks. Due to work schedule I didn't get a chance to change the D-KAZ
beam. Hopefully this evening...

I did spend another hour with the Wellbrook D-KAZ/Vactrol (330 null) vs the
SAL-30 last night. Nulling stations to the NW with them was a toss-up, on
some nulls the D-KAZ won, on others the SAL-30. IMO, that is awesome. The
SAL-30 is an expensive antenna, and offers 8 directional beams with
excellent f/b. The down-side is that the nulls cannot be fine-tuned... but
8 beams rock :)

I am really interested in setting up the D-KAZ at 45/225, that will allow
me to compare nulls on the big guns to the NE.

I do have a questions if Neil is reading. Would a Super KAZ offer wider
null-steering vs the D-KAZ?

Re: [IRCA] [ABDX] Common-Mode Choke Designed for MW DXing

2016-04-27 Thread Brandon Jordan
Thanks Les. I just ordered one of these. I also asked the vendor if they would
consider making a similar common-mode choke for 10-500 kHZ.

I have some local noise which is generally only an issue during daytime when
signal levels are low. I am pretty sure it is locally generated. The DX
Engineering choke I purchased was no help, but it requires a ground. Perhaps
the 4' ground and radials were not sufficient for the unit, or the noise is not
actually local to my house.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Sky & Telescope article on MW DXing during the eclipse

2017-08-15 Thread Brandon J
I am heading to Mt. Juliet, TN with cameras and telecopes, and will also be
doing SDR spectrum recordings there with a 4' x 33' ALA100 while also recording
from my home QTH (east of Memphis) which is outside of totality. Hopefully
should be some very interesting recordings to dig through.

[IRCA] Eclipse DX SDR Recordings

2017-08-23 Thread Brandon Jordan
For anyone interested in DXing the MW band during the Solar Eclipse totality, I
am offering WinRadio G33DDC recordings from Mt Juliet, TN. The 475 kHz to 1725
kHz recordings span from 12:12-12:41 PM and 12:57-2:55 PM. At this QTH the
eclipse started at 11:59 AM, totality 1:27:37 - 1:30:03, and eclipse ending at
2:54 PM. Recordings via WinRadio G33DDC and a Wellbrook 4x33’ ALA100N loop
oriented along the NW/SE the eclipse path. From my initial listen, there is
some very amazing propagation and unique eclipse-related broadcasts from
daytime broadcasters to be gleaned.

The recordings are 118 GB total size and will require aa 128 GB thumb drive and
can be decoded via the free WinRadio G33DDC Excalibur software via
http://www.winradio.com/home/download-g33ddc.htm.

Send your 128 GB thumb drive and 1$ USD return postage world-wide and I will
copy the recordings and return your thumb drive and you can DX the eclipse from
Mt. Juliet, TN with the WinRadio software at your leisure. Mail to:

[IRCA] IRCA DXWW Column

2017-09-19 Thread Brandon Jordan
Heys folks. As you my or may not know, I volunteered to take on DXWW-W from
Phil who has been doing a fantastic care taker job for a few years. Coming over
from the DXWW-E side, it is amazing the work Phil has been doing to glean your
logs from your posts in the forum and whipping them up into format for the
column. I have been used to Mark's meticulously formatted reports, and other
folks specifically submitting logs for the column.

You West Coast guys are so laid back!

Before I even formally ask, I would like to get feedback from you TA DX'ers.
Phil has been gleaning your posts for logs you have posted in your own ways,
some with details, some without besides good/poor/fair, some without times or
with dates to be pulled from the time of your post. Hardly any seem to be
submitted to Phil specifically for DXWW-W.

Since I am editing DXWW East/West and TBDX into a single DXWW column, is there
any way to herd you West Coast cats? Easy stuff like semi consistent date and
time formats, details beyond good/fair/poor. In good faith, I cannot add posts
with simply good/fair/poor or especially carrier posts. I understand you may be
posting daily captures, but need details for others not so fortunate.

Officially cc:ing dxww.i...@gmail.com for you semi properly formatted posts you
want included in the bulletin would make my life so much easier. ;)

Is this stuff do-able or have I bitten off way more than I can chew? Opening up
the discussion :)

Re: [IRCA] IRCA DXWW Column

2017-09-19 Thread Brandon Jordan
Heya Craig. Many thank for your response! Not asking for language
expertise, etc. Just wondering if the DXWW-W crew is open to helping me
getting the column together in a small way besides what i would call
'bumming quarters', which is what Phil has been doing. Yours is the first
response, hoping others chip in.

If nobody really cares one way or the other except posting on the e-group,
then speak up so the IRCA can discuss planning for the future on the DXWW
column.

[IRCA] Palstar MW550P + Box Loop Antenna

2009-01-20 Thread Brandon Jordan

Hi Nick,

A tuned loop already has a lot of preselection capability, so the selectivity
of the MW550P might not be that useful. At 12 dB maximum, it's not really
high gain, but high gain probably wouldn't be needed in your location unless
the loop antenna was quite small.

Or were you thinking of replacing the 550P's internal inductor with the winding
of your loop antenna?

Since the MW550P has a large 6:1 vernier tuning capacitor, I was
thinking the MW550P could replace the loop tuning capacitor completely
and that it could perhaps sit inside the crate loop.

Is this feasible?

[IRCA] Tons of TA carriers audible in Memphis

2009-01-24 Thread Brandon Jordan
I missed the past few nights of good TA conditions. I fired up the
SDR-IQ this evening and strong TA carriers visible, especially low-band:

576, 585, 612 producing threshold audio, 521, 711, 756, 765, 909, 949,
954, 1134 (second strongest), 1206, 1215, 1503, 1521.

My experience this far inland is that transmitter sunrise enhancement
can produce some of the best chances for audio during an opening.
Fingers crossed some of these improve enough to be audible on the E100
slider!

[IRCA] IBOC carrier precision

2009-02-09 Thread Brandon Jordan
I know there are some real IBOC experts on the lists and have a
question. Are most, if not all, IBOC stations precisely on-frequency? I
believe I read that IBOC required extreme frequency precision of the
carrier frequency? I am looking for MW stations to help in accurate
calibration of SDR receivers in order to measure frequency offsets, and
am hoping my memory regarding this is accurate.

On a positive note, I calibrated the G313e to IBOC WLAC 1510 kHz, and
was then pleased to note that IBOC KMOX's carrier measured exactly
1210. khz.

[IRCA] Voice of Nevis 895

2009-02-12 Thread Brandon Jordan
Rare visitor here in Memphis, Voice of Nevis on 895 kHz coming in
extremely well at 0400+ on the SE/NW ALA100 antenna. Noted a strong het
on 900 kHz with the T615 ULR and checked with the SDR-IQ and sure enough
a very strong signal on 895 kHz with back-to-back vocals R&B vocals. ID
just heard at 0419 "Your listening to VON". Also audible during peaks on
the E100 Slider + ALA100, best by off-tuning to 896 kHz to knock the
stronger co-channel 890 down!

[IRCA] WWWE-1100 on late

2009-02-16 Thread Brandon Jordan
WWWE-1100 Atlanta appears to be on late. Competing with WTAM here in
Memphis, mainly back to back Spanish inspirational vocals, giving an
address of P.O. Box 10345, Washington, DC 20020. A quick google of this
shows this is the address for Coalicion Nacional Latina de Ministros &
Lideres Cristianos, associated with WWGB Poder 1030.

No local ID heard, so I assume this is WWWE. Can anyone verify?

[IRCA] WNQM-1300 Nashville - Radio Vida

2009-02-19 Thread Brandon Jordan
WNQM-1300 in Nashville is now in Spanish as "Radio Vida". My last log of
them on Jan 2 had them in English. Not sure if this is already well
known, but was a bit of a surprise to me. I had thought at first this
was one of the Texas Spanish language religious broadcasters listed on
1300 kHz.

From a google search, WNQM appears to have been a sister station to
shortwave broadcaster WWCR. The FCC database doesn't appear to show the
station having changed hands recently, so perhaps Radio Vida is still
related to WWCR.

[IRCA] How much ground for a EWE?

2009-03-10 Thread Brandon Jordan
I'm planning on sitting up a few EWE's over the next few weekends. How
much ground rod do EWEs require? Would 4' copper pipe be sufficient?

Also, does anyone have any advice on a easy way to put a copper pipe in
the ground? I believe I read something years ago about using a garden
hose connected to the copper pipe and the water allows you put the
ground rod in without hammering. Of course, I may have just dreamed this
up :)

[IRCA] WHYL-960 DX Test barely heard in Memphis, TN

2009-03-15 Thread Brandon Jordan
Dominant on 960 kHz was WABG in Greenwood, MS and WERC in Birmingham,

go through the recording later and see if I can hear any code.

Surprised even this was even heard as WHYL's bearing from here is
approx. 59°, so pretty much in the side null of my ALA100 Loop bearing
150°/330°. I had meant to reorient the loop during the day yesterday,
but totally forgot.

Is there down-sides to leaving the build-in loopstick in place and just

I received my PL300WT today, from "anon-co". It came with an English
"Operation Manual" consisting of 9 pages of 8 1/2 x 11 paper and is an
obvious photocopy of a smaller version. I haven't had time yet to do more
than put in batteries and tune around for a couple of minutes. I was
pleased
to be able to figure out how to switch to 10 kHz tuning without looking
through the manual. No time for much more than that--too many things going
on right now. A quick glance through the manual indicates it's a fairly
good
English rendition.

Hi Pete,

Thank you for your comments. By coincidence, I also received another
Tecsun
PL-300WT today, which was my second (both from "Liypn," and both with
no
manual of any type). I plan to run detailed tests on quality control,
and
performance against other stock Ultralights to confirm that the
sensitivity
and selectivity are identical to the previous performance of the first
model
(which now has a 7.5" loopstick).

On both my units, you can switch between MW and LW simply by pushing the
LW/MW button when the unit is operating. The unit gives one beep for
switching to LW, and two beeps for switching to MW.

The rapid tuning function is a normal digital feature of the radio,
which
tunes at a faster rate when the user makes wide frequency sweeps. It
then
returns to the 1 kHz or 10 kHz step mode (whichever is selected) when
the
user's rapid tuning stops.

Since our locations are so close, I'll be checking the same fringe
stations
that you listed (during your quick band sweep) on the new stock PL-300WT
here. I'll be interested to see if Tecsun's factory assembly of the
loopstick is identical to the first model, which had the coil secured
right up
against the left mounting bracket. That "no alignment" position wasn't
bad for
AM sensitivity, but it turned out that it wasn't the exact optimum
position.

In a message dated 6/8/2009 3:07:43 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time,
p...@comcast.net writes:

Mine arrived today. Initial comments:
1. As others have noted, very good on FM.
2. I cannot get it to go in to LW mode despite following the
instructions (turn off; depess MW/LW button until it says "LW YES").
Its default after that when I turn it on is the FM band; when I press
MW/LW, the MW band always shows.
3. Sometimes while scooting up the AM band, it will jump by the
hundreds rather than the 10s (900-1000-1100 etc.)
4. I just can't tell if what I'm getting matches Gary's
observations. Comparisons (all on my desk inside the house):

1650 - mix of Kent and Vashon Island TIS stations
Eton E100 - loudest but hindered by high frequency cutoff caused by
modification
DX398 - pretty good
PL300 - fair but no wiggle room
SRF59 - barely there; very tough to tune
M37V - barely there; vulnerable to KKMO overload

1130 - CKWX
Eton E100 - quite good
DX398 - good
SRF59 - not the strongest but better frequency response makes it more
readable
PL300 - barely readable at max volume
M37V - useless due to KKOL overload

680-KBRD was good on all of them; KOAC not readable on any of them.
They all pick up the KKOL/KKMO mixtures on 1240 and 1420.

I look forward to playing with it tonight. Off the top, though, it
looks to me like you can't boost the audio up high enough to be able
to read weak signals. We'll see.

[IRCA] N. Alabama DXpedition - Sep 26-27 - superb TA conditions

2009-09-27 Thread Brandon Jordan
Jim Pogue, JD Stephens and I went on a DXpedition to Joe Wheeler State
Park in Northern Alabama over the weekend. We employed a Super KAZ loop
antenna bearing 40 degrees and enjoyed the best inland TA session that
any of us can recall. Northwestern Alabama is not what one would
consider a prime TA DX hotspot by any means, but the combination of the
outstanding Super KAZ loop and the excellent conditions really created a
'perfect storm' of TA DX fun.

The first night, although compromised due to local storm fronts, yielded
many great logs in difficult circumstances. Last night (Sep 27 UT) was
simply fantastic. Algeria, Denmark, Germany, France, Spain, England,
Morocco and many other countries logged on MW and LW. I have two nights
of Perseus drift net recordings to start digging through, and will post
logs over the next weeks both here and on DXWW East.

It really was a joy, not to mention a big surprise, hearing DR P5
Kalundborg, Denmark on 1062 kHz signing on with a great signal and that
awesome IS!

Re: [IRCA] RFC - NCC-1 or NCC-2

2018-07-07 Thread Brandon Jordan
Hi Colin. I missed this post somehow but, since seeing it, thought I should
respond. I own both the NCC-1 and NCC-2. I actually thought I sold the NCC-1
last year on eBay but obviously did not as I just found it boxed up in my radio
room closet.

I have way more experience with the NCC-1, mainly phasing dual DXE active
whips. I bought the NCC-2 from a ham who couldn’t figure out how to use it, but
unfortunately since I put it online after a few months of being boxed, I don’t
have any output out of antenna 2 so it is going to DXE for repair. Long story
short, no experience with the NCC-2 besides a few days of testing when it first
arrived. The NCC-1 worked great on two DXE active whips spaced 100’ apart.

I have been so enamored with the Shared Apex Loop that regular phasers have
been a bit on the back-burner and why I am now very interested in your new
model. In speaking with the SAL guru Mark Bauman about dimensions on a SAL-35,
he mentioned phasing two SAL’s could be very interesting and since I happen to
have two SAL units I am planning on experimenting with that. I have the post
holes dug, the 35’ masts aluminum masts built and etc ready to go but don’t see
me getting those up until it cools off some here in TN.

Brandon

Re: [IRCA] RFC - NCC-1 or NCC-2

2018-07-09 Thread Brandon Jordan
I walked the spacing off today, it looks like roughly 175’ from SAL to SAL
center.

One of these will be a SAL-35, the second a SAL-30. I have more spacing options
for a SAL-20 as the second SAL, up to a 400’.

[IRCA] Thank you for the Rick Herald award

2018-09-12 Thread Brandon Jordan
To IRCA members, Bruce P just let me know I was honored with the Rick
Herald Award. Thank you, that is kinda crazy.

I received this award because:

*According to the nomination, you received it for your work as DXWW editor:
"Brandon combined the East and West DX Worldwide columns in DX Monitor,
allowing him to become the Editor of the new column without doubling the
workload of his previous “job” editing the East column, and has since run
the combined column very successfully. He has also encouraged members to
submit logging directly to him, rather than going through the IRCA’s
message list."*

So I have a challenge for our esteemed west coast DX'ers, please take East
Coast Master DXer Mark Connelly's example to heart, and submit logs
(hopefully formatted to make it easy for your editor but I will work with
what you send) directly to me.

Thanks guys!

73,
Brandon

Re: [IRCA] [nrc-am] XHDATA D-808-- The Summer Travel "Smoke Test"

2018-10-18 Thread Brandon Jordan
I ordered the XHDATA D-808 via eBay via Harelan Ecommerce on Sep 1, it finally
shipped Oct 1 via Israel and arrived in my mail box today Oct 18. Was a bit
concerned there for a while but glad it arrived. I have everything for Gary’s
D-808 loopstick transplant and hope to have it finished this weekend.

As a too level Master Procrastinator, I also have all the parts for an as yet
un-built FSL that I will work on also :)
